A great read from
SE Wrestle for Dalton Cats Wrestling fans

GHSA 5A Team/Individual State Wrestling Championships.

Expect the team race in 5A to be a fun one (just like it was a year ago).

Interesting race for the team title in 5A. Ola looks like the team to beat, but we were fooled at duals in thinking that … are they going to win traditional? With 5 Champs and 2 runners-up and 12 total qualifiers they are in the best position to claim the title. Dalton comes in strong with 11 qualifiers and 3 champs, but must get production from their 4’s, 5’s, and 6’s to have a shot at claiming the title. Woodland has a legit shot with 10 qualifiers - 8 of which were either 1st or 2nd at sectionals. And then you have Jefferson and Cass lurking … both have 6 that were either 1st or 2nd at sectionals as well. Ware County, Jones County, and Coffee have numbers but they will need their #2, #3, #4, etc. to carry them if they are going to be in the discussion for a top 3 finish.
Schedule

106 lbs.

The Field:
Amari Kinnamore (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 1st
Jair Flores (Cartersville) - Section A 2nd
Zacirion Reed (Coffee) - Section A 3rd
Nathen Ridley (Dalton) - Section A 4th
Patrick Ward (McIntosh) - Section A 5th
Sergio Romero (Tucker) - Section A 6th
Gabriel Easey (Ola) - Section B 1st
Barrett Clayton (Jefferson) - Section B 2nd
Micah Mostek (Eastside Hs) - Section B 3rd
ANDREW SALMERON (Loganville HS) - Section B 4th
Landon Lewis (Jones County) - Section B 5th
Tate Sauls (Villa Rica) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Gabriel Easey (Ola)
Contenders:
Barrett Clayton (Jefferson)
Amari Kinnamore (Woodland, Cartersville)
Jair Flores (Cartersville)
Darkhorse: Micah Mostek (Eastside Hs)
Bracketbuster: Landon Lewis (Jones County)
Things to know:
Wow Easey made it look easy last weekend in Section B (yes I had to do that). He had 4 1st period falls and ran through the bracket. Given that he earned a tech fall of Kinnamore at State Duals he is the clear favorite to claim the title
Kinnamore also looked great on his way to the Section A finals, but keep in mind that Clayton beat Kinnamore at state duals as well so he will need to avenge that loss if he is going to emerge from the top side of the bracket.
113 lbs.

The Field:
Hunter Barrett (Cass) - Section A 1st
Noah Cates (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 2nd
Brayden Stevens (Coffee) - Section A 3rd
Dominick Parks (Dalton) - Section A 4th
Jackson Connor (Statesboro) - Section A 5th
Jordan Maxwell (Ware County) - Section A 6th
Max Meredith (Ola) - Section B 1st
Hunter McCleskey (Jones County) - Section B 2nd
Robert Managa (Chapel Hill) - Section B 3rd
Julian Newman (Villa Rica) - Section B 4th
Tyler Rhodes (Loganville HS) - Section B 5th
Marquis Myles (Banneker) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Hunter Barrett (Cass)
Contenders:
Max Meredith (Ola)
Hunter McCleskey (Jones County)
Noah Cates (Woodland, Cartersville)
Darkhorse: Robert Managa (Chapel Hill)
Bracketbuster: Tyler Rhodes (Loganville HS)
Things to know:
Tons of returning placers at 113
Hunter Barrett was 3rd last year at this weight, Magana (is it Magana or Managa?) was 3rd at 106, McCleskey was 4th at 106, and Meredith was 6th at 106
Barrett beat Meredith 2-0 at state duals and the two look like they should take care of their sides of the bracket after the way they wrestled last weekend
120 lbs.

The Field:
Lee Camp (Cass) - Section A 1st
Dylan Couey (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 2nd
Pablo Nunez (Coffee) - Section A 3rd
Grant Adams (Cartersville) - Section A 4th
Jr. Deharo (Dalton) - Section A 5th
Da`Marion Zanders (Ware County) - Section A 6th
Roman Belardo (Jefferson) - Section B 1st
Tye Daniel (Ola) - Section B 2nd
Mason Moody (Locust Grove) - Section B 3rd
Donnie Lowden (Warner Robins) - Section B 4th
Isaiah Edmonds (Kell) - Section B 5th
Charles Henderson (Eastside Hs) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Roman Belardo (Jefferson)
Contenders:
Lee Camp (Cass)
Tye Daniel (Ola)
Dylan Couey (Woodland, Cartersville)
Darkhorse: Mason Moody (Locust Grove)
Bracketbuster: Jr. Deharo (Dalton)
Things to know:
Two returning champs at the weight plus a returning runner-up (and state champ two years ago) headline the weight
Roman Belardo won 113 last year and beat Camp 8-5 at state duals and beat Moody 10-5 in the semis last week
Tye Daniel and Moody didn’t wrestle last week, but the winner likely gets Camp (and we would could get another iteration of Camp vs. Moody)
Dylan Couey has had a solid season and although I don’t think he beats Belardo he should be in the hunt for a spot on the podium (he didn’t wrestle Nunez last week at sections though and that will be the first hurdle)
126 lbs.

The Field:
Eaiden Neal (Cartersville) - Section A 1st
Luka Jensen (Cass) - Section A 2nd
Bryan Cates (Coffee) - Section A 3rd
Rodrigo Reyes (Ware County) - Section A 4th
David Mathieu (Greenbrier) - Section A 5th
Nathen Hernandez (Dalton) - Section A 6th
Durben Carpenter (Chattahoochee HS) - Section B 1st
Draike McDonald (Jefferson) - Section B 2nd
Caleb Benton (Locust Grove) - Section B 3rd
Aiden Lipford (Jones County) - Section B 4th
Jobi Colbert (Ola) - Section B 5th
Preston Valentine (Flowery Branch) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Durben Carpenter (Chattahoochee HS)
Contenders:
Eaiden Neal (Cartersville)
Draike McDonald (Jefferson)
Luka Jensen (Cass)
Darkhorse: Bryan Cates (Coffee)
Bracketbuster: David Mathieu (Greenbrier)
Things to know:
Carpenter was 6th last year at 132, Neal just missed making the podium - both handled their sections with relative ease
The battle for a spot on the podium on the backside could be fun to watch with a number of different wrestlers that could make a run
McDonald beat Jensen 13-12 at state duals, Cates is a returning State Placer
132 lbs.

The Field:
Zaedin Ausmus (Dalton) - Section A 1st
Rowdy Duck (Cass) - Section A 2nd
Brayden Petras (McIntosh) - Section A 3rd
Nathan Cates (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 4th
Gunner Merritt (Coffee) - Section A 5th
Dhavid Evans (Northside, Columbus) - Section A 6th
Hunter Keane (Cambridge) - Section B 1st
Landen Moss (Ola) - Section B 2nd
Tucker Kazienko (Jefferson) - Section B 3rd
Jackson Brown (Jones County) - Section B 4th
Hasaan Williams (Eastside Hs) - Section B 5th
Makel Cronan (Villa Rica) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Hunter Keane (Cambridge)
Contenders:
Zaedin Ausmus (Dalton)
Rowdy Duck (Cass)
Landen Moss (Ola)
Darkhorse: Tucker Kazienko (Jefferson)
Bracketbuster: Hasaan Williams (Eastside Hs)
Things to know:
Deep weight, but returning State Placer hunter Keane looks like the man to beat - pinning Kazienko and downing Moss 10-3 to claim the Section B title
Zaedin Ausmus just missed the podium a year ago and had a great Section A tournament - taking out returning State Runner-up Rowdy Duck in the finals
Duck beat Petras in the semis last weekend and will likely have to do it again and then beat Keane to make a return trip to the finals
138 lbs.

The Field:
Zachary Wallace (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 1st
Talan Nix (Cartersville) - Section A 2nd
Imraan Mumin (Tucker) - Section A 3rd
Aron Solis (Northside, Columbus) - Section A 4th
Ethan Harrington (Cass) - Section A 5th
Malachi Williams (Jenkins) - Section A 6th
J`Veion Redmon (Ola) - Section B 1st
Arrie Martin (Jones County) - Section B 2nd
Jin Davis (Northview) - Section B 3rd
Dominic Haines (Jefferson) - Section B 4th
Tomarian Hardin (Eagles Landing) - Section B 5th
Dylan Baynes (Eastside Hs) - Section B 6th
Favorite: J`Veion Redmon (Ola)
Contenders:
Zachary Wallace (Woodland, Cartersville)
Talan Nix (Cartersville)
Arrie Martin (Jones County)
Darkhorse: Jin Davis (Northview)
Bracketbuster: Ethan Harrington (Cass)
Things to know:
J’Veion Redmon was 3rd a year ago, beat Martin handily in the Section A finals last week and has an 8-4 win over Wallace from state duals … as a result he is the favorite (I don’t know if he has wrestled Nix yet this year and that could be the semi on the bottom side)
Zachary Wallace was 4th at 144 last year, beat Nix in the Section B finals 3-1 in a good match - he didn’t wrestle Martin when Woodland and Jones County met at state duals
Talan Nix was 6th a year ago and is one to watch after a very good season
144 lbs.

The Field:
Hayden Santora (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 1st
Arthur Reed (Coffee) - Section A 2nd
Alex Overby (Dalton) - Section A 3rd
Alex Salser (Greenbrier) - Section A 4th
Kaden Drury (Ware County) - Section A 5th
RaQuavis Prescott (Statesboro) - Section A 6th
Brian Papcun (Ola) - Section B 1st
Jayden Draper (Winder-Barrow) - Section B 2nd
Matthew Watts (Locust Grove) - Section B 3rd
Malaki Williams (Villa Rica) - Section B 4th
Walker Thomas (Cambridge) - Section B 5th
Jordan Amedee (Eastside Hs) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Brian Papcun (Ola)
Contenders:
Hayden Santora (Woodland, Cartersville)
Arthur Reed (Coffee)
Jayden Draper (Winder-Barrow)
Darkhorse: Alex Overby (Dalton)
Bracketbuster: Walker Thomas (Cambridge)
Things to know:
Brian Papcun was 2nd at this weight last year - losing to McKnight in the finals … he hammered the competition at sectionals last week and pinned Santora at state duals
Hayden Santora, who was 3rd at 138 in 2023, had to battle with Reed, who was 6th at this weight in 2023, to claim the Section A title (winning 6-4).
Alex Overby is a returning SQ and just missed a spot on the podium last year (he lost to Reed 5-4 in last week’s semis)
150 lbs.

The Field:
Sebastian Melendez (Greenbrier) - Section A 1st
Zy Ramsey (Ware County) - Section A 2nd
Alex Schwarz (Northside, Columbus) - Section A 3rd
Marty Gonzalez (Calhoun) - Section A 4th
Jordan O`neil (Northgate) - Section A 5th
Ezra Wingfield (Dalton) - Section A 6th
Dallas Russell (Jefferson) - Section B 1st
Will Thomas (Cambridge) - Section B 2nd
Jared Walker (Ola) - Section B 3rd
Boston Siemer (Centennial) - Section B 4th
Karter Nolan (Locust Grove) - Section B 5th
Robert Scott (Jones County) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Dallas Russell (Jefferson)
Contenders:
Sebastian Melendez (Greenbrier)
Will Thomas (Cambridge)
Zy Ramsey (Ware County)
Darkhorse: Jared Walker (Ola)
Bracketbuster: Karter Nolan (Locust Grove)
Things to know:
Russell is the returning 132 lb. State Champ and is the clear favorite
Jared Walker was 3rd at this weight a year ago and don’t be fooled by the #3 from sectionals - his only loss was to Russell 8-4 in the semis.
Will Thomas is a returning SQ and the top side of this bracket is the one to watch with a potential Walker vs. Thomas semi and the winner getting Melendez
157 lbs.

The Field:
Randy Slinger (Dalton) - Section A 1st
Mason Tompkins (Cass) - Section A 2nd
Jack Mathieu (Greenbrier) - Section A 3rd
Luke Adams (Coffee) - Section A 4th
Gunter Fore (Ware County) - Section A 5th
Joseph Patrie (McIntosh) - Section A 6th
Seth Larson (Flowery Branch) - Section B 1st
David Little (Jones County) - Section B 2nd
Ty Tosi (Cambridge) - Section B 3rd
Avery Spencer (Locust Grove) - Section B 4th
Jackson Sargant (Ola) - Section B 5th
Jertavious Allen (Eastside Hs) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Seth Larson (Flowery Branch)
Contenders:
Randy Slinger (Dalton)
Mason Tompkins (Cass)
David Little (Jones County)
Darkhorse: Jack Mathieu (Greenbrier)
Bracketbuster: Jackson Sargant (Ola)
Things to know:
No bigger favorite in 5A than Seth Larson. Larson’s only loss on the season came in the Knockout final to Gianni Maldonado of Lake Gibson
Larson will look to join an elite group and become a 4x State Champion
Sliger beat Tompkins in sudden victory and as a result is on the opposite side of Larson
165 lbs.

The Field:
Isaac Green (Calhoun) - Section A 1st
Heath Tatum (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 2nd
Ronin Simms (Decatur) - Section A 3rd
Leon Roberson (Dalton) - Section A 4th
Cameron Hambrick (Ware County) - Section A 5th
Henry Julian (McIntosh) - Section A 6th
Davis Dendy (Jefferson) - Section B 1st
Zach Amstutz (Kell) - Section B 2nd
Matthew Medina (Loganville HS) - Section B 3rd
Angel Alvarez (Greater Atlanta Christian HS) - Section B 4th
Talon Cole (Ola) - Section B 5th
Damani Fleming (Eastside Hs) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Davis Dendy (Jefferson)
Contenders:
Isaac Green (Calhoun)
Heath Tatum (Woodland, Cartersville)
Zach Amstutz (Kell)
Darkhorse: Matthew Medina (Loganville HS)
Bracketbuster: Talon Cole (Ola)
Things to know:
One of the best potential finals in 5A … we can’t help but look ahead to a possible Dendy vs. Green matchup.
Green was 2nd last year to Larson and won Section A last week with ease
Dendy was 2nd as a freshman and a state champ as a sophomore before missing last year due to injury - he also won his section with ease
I can’t imagine anyone knocking off either on the way to the final … I don’t believe they have seen one another this year so picking a favorite is tough
I know Dendy’s losses have come only to out of state competition - to Max Norman of Baylor twice and then at KC Stampede and Cheesehead
175 lbs.

The Field:
Kirecg Roe (Cass) - Section A 1st
Langston Blakeley (Arabia Mountain) - Section A 2nd
Matthew VanWettering (Harris County) - Section A 3rd
Mitchell Horton (Greenbrier) - Section A 4th
Rex Richardson (Calhoun) - Section A 5th
Wyatt Deal (Ware County) - Section A 6th
Xander Dossett (Ola) - Section B 1st
Cap Benson (Jefferson) - Section B 2nd
Jason Clark (Flowery Branch) - Section B 3rd
Jacob Skinner (Jones County) - Section B 4th
BRAHIM MORIAYE (Loganville HS) - Section B 5th
Robert Moore (Kell) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Xander Dossett (Ola)
Contenders:
Kirecg Roe (Cass)
Cap Benson (Jefferson)
Langston Blakeley (Arabia Mountain)
Darkhorse: Jason Clark (Flowery Branch)
Bracketbuster: Rex Richardson (Calhoun)
Things to know:
Xander Dossett was 3rd last year at 165 - he missed some of the year due to injury but is unbeaten since coming back to mat at state duals
Kirecg Roe was 3rd last year at 157 and has wrestled some of the year at 165, but won Section A with ease at 175 this past weekend
Roe could get a very good Cap Benson in the semis and that’s a match to watch (that’s assuming Benson beats Clark)
190 lbs.

The Field:
Easton Boren (Harris County) - Section A 1st
Jatavius Williams (Coffee) - Section A 2nd
Ben Perry (Northgate) - Section A 3rd
Owen Jones (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 4th
Noah Lucas (Ware County) - Section A 5th
Andrew Moreau (Tucker) - Section A 6th
Griffin Harper (Flowery Branch) - Section B 1st
Dwight Banks III (Chapel Hill) - Section B 2nd
Noah Phillips (Loganville HS) - Section B 3rd
Jude Wiseman (Locust Grove) - Section B 4th
Adam Carroll (Centennial) - Section B 5th
Colby Lejeune (Ola) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Griffin Harper (Flowery Branch)
Contenders:
Easton Boren (Harris County)
Jatavius Williams (Coffee)
Dwight Banks III (Chapel Hill)
Darkhorse: Ben Perry (Northgate)
Bracketbuster: Adam Carroll (Centennial)
Things to know:
Griffin Harper was 2nd last year at 165 and has put together a fantastic sophomore season thus far
Easton Boren knocked off last year’s state runner-up at this weight Jatavius Williams in the Section A finals 7-0 … Boren is just a freshman and certainly one to watch
If Williams beats Perry like he did in last week’s semis we could get state runner-up vs. state runner-up in the bottom semis with Williams and Harper
215 lbs.

The Field:
Styker Woods (Dalton) - Section A 1st
John Gill (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 2nd
Tye Bias (Northside, Columbus) - Section A 3rd
Samuel Morris (Coffee) - Section A 4th
Dylan Maina (Hiram) - Section A 5th
Levi Garner (Harris County) - Section A 6th
Sawyer Daniell (Villa Rica) - Section B 1st
LeFabian Williams (Chapel Hill) - Section B 2nd
Jose Evatt (Eagles Landing) - Section B 3rd
Leshawn Stuckey (Banneker) - Section B 4th
Tyson McLean (Union Grove) - Section B 5th
Reese Ferm (Jefferson) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Styker Woods (Dalton)
Contenders:
John Gill (Woodland, Cartersville)
Sawyer Daniell (Villa Rica)
LeFabian Williams (Chapel Hill)
Darkhorse: Tye Bias (Northside, Columbus)
Bracketbuster: Dylan Maina (Hiram)
Things to know:
Woods has twice been on the podium (4th in 2022 and 3rd in 2023), but has yet to make the finals … he looks poised to do that in 2023 after a solid run to the Section A title
Sawyer Daniell won Section B with 3 falls - he should get either Bias or Gill in the semis. Bias and Gill did not wrestle last week at sectionals so that is a quarter to watch. Gill beat Daniell earlier this year at state duals.
285 lbs.

The Field:
Jabare George (Ware County) - Section A 1st
Kwadrus Wilson (Woodland, Cartersville) - Section A 2nd
Delroy Hurst (Cartersville) - Section A 3rd
Bryce Anderson (Jenkins) - Section A 4th
Jahari Medlock (Charles Drew) - Section A 5th
Riley Souther (Dalton) - Section A 6th
Will Agudelo (Jones County) - Section B 1st
Austin Presley (Villa Rica) - Section B 2nd
Terrell Seward (Warner Robins) - Section B 3rd
GAGE BISH (Loganville HS) - Section B 4th
Tyquon Hollins (Banneker) - Section B 5th
Gabe Chigwere (Cambridge) - Section B 6th
Favorite: Jabare George (Ware County)
Contenders:
Kwadrus Wilson (Woodland, Cartersville)
Will Agudelo (Jones County)
Austin Presley (Villa Rica)
Darkhorse: Delroy Hurst (Cartersville)
Bracketbuster: Riley Souther (Dalton)
Things to know:
Rarely do you see a returning State Runner-up at a #6 spot in sectionals. Riley Souther was a takedown away from a state title a year ago medically forfeited to 6th in Section A after his 8-6 semifinal loss to George … if Souther is back and healthy he is the easiest bracketbuster to pick in 5A.
George had quite a run at sectionals - beating Souther and then downing Wilson 7-2 to win the bracket.
Agudelo pinned Bish and then downed Presely 6-1 to take the Section B title … he could get Wilson in the semis (he lost to Wilson a state duals)
