Why I started an Online Marketing Company?!?

In 2017 I moved from North Bend, WA back to the Willamette Valley with knowledge about diesel tractors.

Knowing that 1. I wanted to work for myself and 2. There was a need for tractor maintenance and repair - I started a service-based business called Mobile Tractor Maintenance (loosely modeled after my late dear Uncle Ray’s business, Ray’s Mobile Maintenance).

I started this business with a plan to work it for 3-5 years then transition into something less physically demanding.

Last year, after a ton of research, business classes, and soul-searching, I landed on a business that surprised me as much as it may surprise you - an online marketing agency!

What the heck!? How could an artist/mechanic/gardener/mycophile who is into community building, plant-based food, and sustainability, have any interest in online marketing!!??

It’s true, I can’t stand most advertising. I haven’t watched TV programming since high school, mostly because I HATE commercials.
There are three main reasons mass advertising like TV commercials don’t work on me:

1. They try to sell me things I have no need for or interest in
2. They try to manipulate me into buying these things
3. Many of the ads are for things that put money into the hands of large corporations 

However, over the last few years, I’ve noticed something surprising. Once in a while, I see an ad on Google or social media that I appreciate!

Sure, we’ve all complained about Googling (fill in the blank) to learn more about what a family member is going through, only to be bombarded with ads for supplements that are supposed to help with (fill in the blank).

It’s annoying and kind of feels like an invasion of privacy.

But what if it’s an ad for something relevant? Something you do have a need for...

A while back I found myself in need of a new belt. I asked a few friends where they would go for one. Their suggestions were good but didn’t fit my particular needs. Of course, I also Googled belts. Sure enough, I started seeing ads for belts.

Then something unusual happened...I saw an ad that was informative, creative, and entertaining, for a belt that ticked all my boxes! I am perfectly comfortable sharing that the ad was for a Grip6 belt. I ended up buying one and months later I still love it.

Holy crap! Marketing that worked! And it didn’t just work ON me, it worked FOR me. It helped meet a need and my life is better for it.

All this to say that not all advertising is created equal.
