This is Jason Starr, a recent high school graduate from New York.

Earlier this week, Jessica Ahlers and Spring Piatek had the opportunity to meet with and officially announce him as the winner of the Jeremy Higgins “North Star Dreamers Memorial Scholarship.”

Jess and Spring received over 500 essays and applications for this scholarship…which completely blew our minds. It was overwhelming thinking of how many well-qualified students there were out there who were so deserving of this financial support.

Jason’s essay and biography stood out among the rest….
“In high school, I pursued public health by getting certified in Epidemiology from John Hopkins University, placing semifinalist in Biology Olympiad, interning in Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and creating a disease model for COVID-19 health equity. I published three first-authored papers at the International Conference for Bioengineering & Biotech. I also founded Tutor Partnerships, a nonprofit that matches volunteer tutors with younger students in need. Leading a team of 29, I established chapters of our program in 27 schools. I host in-person orientations and award ceremonies to motivate tutors and create a sense of community. We were selected by NPSS, President Biden’s call-to-action, for Student Support Accelerator induction.”

During our meeting, he shared his interests, including cross-country running and entrepreneurship (his single mother is a small business owner). He talked about his plans to pursue his passion for science and public health at the University of Pennsylvania State. He dreams of someday becoming a professor to pursue teaching and academic research.

Jessica and Spring both agreed that Jason reminded us of Jeremy in many ways. We told Jason some stories about Jeremy’s life - character traits of when we were all growing up, recent passions, and insight into the people who were touched by Jeremy and supported this memorial scholarship. We talked about this being a rolling scholarship fund so that each spring, another student could be awarded funds to pursue their dreams…and to bring beauty from ashes.

We both think Jeremy would have loved to have met Jason. Many days we are still sad that Jeremy’s gone. But over time, through life’s pain and tragedies, we’ve understood and accepted that sorrow and celebration can coexist. There’s permission to be human and sit with a memory of someone or something we miss…while not letting yesterday's sorrow cloud the celebration of new possibilities today. Jessica and Spring recognize that Jason has an incredibly bright future ahead of him. We hope that this scholarship will honor the life Jeremy had during his time here on earth and highlight the beauty in Jason Starr’s educational goals, passions, and dreams. 🌠🐻‍❄️🌈

In honor of the life of Dr. Jeremy Higgins, we have started a “North Star Dreamers Memorial Scholarship Fund”.

High School Junior and Senior students from across the nation that wish to pursue a future in science, entrepreneurship, or invention will be able to apply. 100% of your tax-deductible gift will go directly to the student’s accredited academic institution to be applied towards tuition or other financial aid related needs.
Jeremy’s family and I will choose and award the winning student in May 2023, and we will be sure to share their story with you. This North Star Dreamers fundraiser will be used to kick off this spring 2023 scholarship, and our hope is to continue this scholarship annually. 🌠🐻‍❄️
