Check this out…

In 1990 the FDA was implementing new food regulations for nutritional labels and food packaging. The FDA wanted a bench mark for daily energy intake (calories eaten). So instead of actually doing studies on people to see how many calories they burned and how many calories the typical person ate, they did surveys.

The surveys revealed the average women reported eating 1,600-2,200 Calories per day, while men reported intakes of 2,000 - 3,000.

So the rough reported average for all adults is between 2,000 and 2,500 calories per day. The FDA didn’t want to promote over consumption so they decided the average American food intake should be 2,000 calories per day (this number is all based on surveys).

Well - it turns out two things are very very wrong with this.

First - humans burn around 2,500 - 3,000 calories per day and this is not because we exercise a lot. In fact - this is not counting exercise.

So - for many people if they accurately track their food intake and they’ve stuck to a 2000 kcal diet they’re likely tired, not building as much lean muscle and over all not as energetic or recovering as fast as they should be.

Second - it turns out people suck at estimating food intake.

It a recent study of 324 men and women across five countries, adults underreported actual food intake by 29 percent on average. That’s like forgetting an entire meal. Think about it - if you eat a 2000 kcal diet and forget you ate 29% of it, you forgot you ate 580 kcal.

That’s like forgetting you ate an entire Mcdonalds Big Mac - or a 6 inch subway sandwich, or two snickers bars, or two bags of skittles, or…

You get the idea.

So - here’s the bottom line - the 2000 kcal diet is not accurate, and second if you want the best energy, fastest recovery make sure you’re eating enough healthy foods.

And if you want to avoid packing on the extra around the mid section make sure you know how much you’re eating everyday.
