At the 90th minute, as we feared the whistle would go on any moment to end the game, Kanu Nwankwo scored our third and equalizing goal, from Okocha’s throw-in. I almost broke the TV with joy.
We entered the extra time, with a golden goal rule. The rule had it that once any team scored first in the extra time, the game would be over. Kanu again found himself outside the 18 yard box, dribbled one, and struck the ball from there. Ọmọ, the ball entered the net. The glasses I didn’t break that day were the ones in the kitchen, I did requiem for all the glasses in the parlour. It was the greatest joy I’ve ever felt in my life till today.
The whole Awada Onitsha was on fire, even dead persons rose up at the level of shouting and noise of jubilation that filled the whole streets around that time of the night. Yes, today 31st July makes it exactly 27 years we played that semifinal match of the Atlanta ‘96 Olympics, USA. We would later meet Argentina at the finals, and we won them too 3-2. The first time ever an African team won the whole world in senior soccer.
