Cape Cod Learning Tours

Introducing people to the incredible world they miss when they come to this amazing archipelago!

Cape Cod holds a unique position in the New England pantheon of interesting places. Birthed by a glacier, battered by winter storms, geologically transient, and ecologically sensitive, most of us live our lives never fully understanding the ecology of Cape Cod. Our goal is help foster awareness of the importance of being good stewards of the world around us through exposure to it's amazing flora and fauna!

Cool Spiders!

Some folks asked about spiders! I left Black Widow and Brown Recluse off because they are so rare.

Something is missing though and that's our full week Outdoor Exploration Program at Gray's Beach in Yarmouth. The town has instituted new rules making it impossible for us to continue our popular program there. We hope to have a new location next year, 2025, that allows us to do even better science and exploring!

Newspapers are something aren't they? News outlets constantly fighting for your eyes and clicks. They sensationalize a lot. Case in point: the current invasion of giant, venomous spiders. Which is not an invasion, nor are they giant and venomous because ALL spiders are venomous.
The Joro Spider does not fly. Juvenile spiders, as anyone who has read Charlotte's Web know, disperse by "ballooning". Creating a small light mass of silk like dandelion fluff and going where the breeze takes them.
They are not giant. The pictures below are of a Yellow Garden Spider, quite common on Cape Cod, and the Joro Spider. Both are about the same size. I've seen much larger orb weavers on my hikes in Southeast Asia.
They are venomous. But so is every spider in the world.
For the most part they want to spin a web, catch bugs, eat and have babies.
As the climate gets warmer we should adjust to these spreading invasive species!

Lots of snake questions lately so I thought I'd put some good information out there.
Below is a ID guide to the 9 species of snakes that call Cape Cod home.
None are venomous. We don't have Copperheads or Water Moccasins or Rattlesnakes. Our habitat does not allow for the type of sanctuary they require to get through the winter.
That does not mean they won't defend themselves. Black Racers and Water Snakes can give a pretty good bite. The Garter, Ribbon and Milk Snake may bite as well but are generally harmless. The other snakes won't hurt you at all.
All of these snakes occupy an important place in our ecology and, quite frankly, are frickin amazing!
If you see a snake don't harm it. Let it do it's thing. The Black Racers are eating rats that are eating the seeds from your bird feeder. Ring Necked Snakes are eating the slugs that are destroying your peppers.
We'll be at the Barnstable County Fair with some snakes. Come on by and check them out!

I'm a pretty small company. Specializing in science and nature tours and teaching people how amazing our world is.
I know many of you won't get to take a tour but you've love to support a small business. So think about buying a t-shirt from my Etsy shop. It would help me and let people know how cool you are!

Where we live is amazing!

I have lived my whole life at the water’s edge. Exploring the beaches, salt marshes, tide pools and assorted environs of Cape Cod has been a lifelong experience. For many years I volunteered as a naturalist with local non-profits.

In 2016 I decided to start my own company to introduce visitors to the tremendous array of life that is all around them. We use real scientific equipment and allow people to interact in a very visceral way with the habitat they’ve been to but never really fully experienced. From lug worms to quahogs to lobsters to horseshoe crabs to pipefish and countless other animals our guest come away with a new and deep appreciation for just how important the water’s edge is.

Since our founding we have been involved with local hotels, had free Splish Splash Tidal Flat Programs, introduced classroom and field lessons to local schools and given various lectures, most recently on Great White Sharks.

If been very fortunate to gather a fantastic and knowledgeable group of naturalist to help me on this endeavor. Please visit my website proper for loads of information!
