Welcome to part 2 of Genevieve’s hair story.

This video right here is the reason I love what I do… I know how nervous she was to get her hair done. I know that her scalp is sensitive and she was worried it would hurt. I know all of this because I’ve been there.

I have to say thank you to Genevieve for giving me a chance to show her her hair’s potential. The best compliment is when she said it “is better than a wig!”.

Where are you at in your hair journey? If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m ready to help simplify your routine and have your curls poppin!

Now that you’ve seen the reveal, you may be wondering how much we had to cut off… Stay tuned for part 3 where we talk about shrinkage and what to expect when you get a curly cut.

In the meantime, drop an emoji in the comment section to show how your last visit to a salon made you feel. Did you feel 💁🏾‍♀️ or 🤷🏾‍♀️ or 😭? I can’t wait to see your answers!

Whew! That consultation unpacked ALOT!

Genevieve’s story is ,unfortunately, very common amongst the natural hair community. It’s part of the reason that professionals can’t JUST do pretty hair…we have to HANDLE the hair PROPERLY.

So, what’s the solution? Find a SPECIALIST that takes the time to LEARN and UNDERSTAND the struggle. Look at their photos. Make sure they do tight curls. Make sure they don’t just straighten or braid natural hair. (Unless that’s the only way you want wear your hair. If so, do you boo!)

If you sit in my chair, just know that I’ve had the same struggles as you. I’ve had more taken off than I asked, heat damage, braids so tight it pulls out my edges, etc. I have been in both sides of the chair. I’m not in this for the trends. I’m not new to this, I’m TRUE to this.😉

Slow your scroll and let me know below what you look for in a salon professional? What stops you from going to a professional? And feel free to tell us some of your hair horror stories. You never know, I might feature some of them!

Thanks for watching!!

Meet Maxine! This was her third visit with me and she came in READY today. She told me the shape she wanted and never looked back. She told me that since I've taught her how to best care for her curls, she now "likes her hair for the first time" and she realizes that her texture isn't "bad". 🥹🥹🥹

You ready for me to teach you??? Message me or book an appointment at destinyssalon.com

I get so excited when I here from my clients that they’re noticing growth! Also, look at how cute Elise’s set looks!

Just giving you a background on Elise’s hair journey… She has been natural longer than me! She was so good at styling her hair that she did hair as a side hustle. 13+ years later and she’s still open to learning new things. This new routine has simplified her products and time. Now that she has two boys, a husband, and a busy life, she doesn’t have time for her routine to take HOURS.

This could be you! If your looking to simplify your routine and have some hair freedom, book an appointment. My booking link is always in the bio.

Shape is everything! This was one of the models for a Tight Curl Mastery class I took last weekend. She wasn’t ready to let go of her “length” at first. But she was so happy after her cut. We didn’t take off everything that could have been taken off but she left with a very flattering well balanced shape.

If I could get all my clients ok with letting go of the tail in the back, I promise you they would love it…

But everyone isn’t ready yet. When you are, I’ll be waiting for you.

Chandra came back in to get a little check up. She’s been keeping up with weekly shampooing, conditioning and styling for about five weeks. We both notice a huge difference in her hair.

A consistent routine with quality product can make a difference even in a short period of time. Her hair FEELS hydrated and the curls are POPPIN! I’m so proud of her!

Who’s next? Let’s set your hair goals and get you there! My info is always in the bio.

Just a cute lil video of my cute lil client…
London came in for a silk press. Her mom has been cleansing her hair weekly, using great products and using hair accessories that don’t cause a lot of tension. Because of this simple routine, we are already seeing healthy length retention.

Beautiful Client’s Mamma:

Are there little tweaks you can make in your routine to see growth? We can’t discuss this and more at your next appointment!

PART 2 of my Hair Journey…

2009 was the year everything changed for my hair. My mom showed me a YouTube video by Rustic Beauty. (One of the OG YouTubers!) When I saw her hair, I was stunned. I didn’t even know that someone with a texture like mine could wear their hair natural. I thought I HAD to have a loose texture or “good hair” to wear my hair that way.

So in February of 2009, I cut off my straight ends and went natural. (Picture 2) At first, I looked a little crazy. 😳

I had so many ups and downs, but overall, my hair was starting to THRIVE !.(Picture 3)

I only wore twists and twist outs. I was so happy with the length and thickness. (Picture 4)

In 2016, I had the longest hair that I’ve EVER had. (Picture 5 and 6) but the longer it got, my haircare practices were catching up to me.

I learned how to GROW my hair to long lengths, I didn’t know how to properly maintain it. I washed MONTHLY , ONLY finger detangled, and kept it in protective styles 90 PERCENT of the time. I had lots of single strand knots and it was only soft when I added water and oil. Once the water dried, it felt crispy and oily at the same time. 😭 Not to mention, finger detangling took me HOURS, which is why I only washed my hair once a month. 🤦🏾‍♀️I finally reached waist length but had to cut it to arm pit length.

Fast Forward to April-ish of 2020, my natural hair journey changed again. What changed? Stay tuned for Part 3!

Let’s talk about hair journeys…

My childhood was like most little black girls in the fact that I had a relaxer. (Picture 2) My hair was about what I considered average length. It would grow to my shoulders and stop. I never had long hair but I didn’t think that black girls could have long hair unless we were mixed with something.

The only other chemical I had growing up was the Jerrhi Curl… (Picture 3) I was the kid no one wanted to sit by on the school bus because I left a HUGE grease mark all on the back of the seat. 😭💦🤣

My sophomore year of highschool, my dad finally let me cut my hair. This time I was trying to look like Nia Long. IYKYK. (Picture 4) I wore my hair like this into adulthood.

After marriage, my birth control was doing a number on my body and it started to affect my hair. I decided to stop doing a relaxer and went back to a … Jherri curl. 🤦🏾‍♀️(Picture 5) But that didn’t help my hair anymore than the relaxer. I just wanted my hair to LOOK curly and be healthy.

Then my mom showed me a YouTube video that changed my life. Stay tuned for Part 2 and 3 of this journey later today.

Joy. That’s what I want to help you feel while getting your hair done. From the moment my client came through the door, til the moment she left, we laughed. It’s not just about hair, it’s the environment. It’s about making you feel comfortable. If that’s the environment you enjoy, come sit in my chair!

"I am so glad that I added a texture set to my haircut appointment! Destiny talked me through the process and products she used as she washed and set my hair. I was amazed at how fresh my wash n' go stayed for nearly a week! That was a first for me after 14 years with natural hair 😮! The cut gave it such a great shape too!

When I set my own hair today, I felt prepared with the recommended products and tools! I'm happy with how my first attempt turned out and excited to keep learning!" -Elise

I'm impressed with Elise and her wash and go for the week! Just think, 14 years natural and you can still learn something new about your hair. 🤷🏾‍♀️

This could be you! Find me at destinyhairsalon.com

Meet Jasmine! She found me through IG while I was in cosmetology school. When we met, I had just taken my first course through . She was the FIRST person I did a wash and go on following the techniques I learned. I didn’t have all the right products yet. Her wash and go still came out BEAUTIFUL! (The 3rd picture is her first time coming to me.)

Fast forward to now, she came in with this BOMB wash and go and just got a dry curly cut. She said she’s been doing he sets the way I taught her while I was in school.

Moral of the story? Just start. Wherever you are, just start. Even if you don’t have the all the right things, just apply what you are learning and you’re bound to get better. Jasmine is coming in for a curl coaching session next month to learn how to tweak her technique and use the products properly. I can’t wait to show you her progress!

This is the result of getting your hair trimmed straight. While there is nothing wrong with it, straight haircuts don’t translate well on textured hair. Why?

To make a long story short, the nape and/or bottom half of our hair is where we will see “length” the fastest because it has a shorter distance to travel to our shoulders or longer. The crown, however, has a much longer distance to reach even just your shoulders. Couple that with most people getting layers in the crown when it’s straight translates to a curly mullet.

If you want to avoid this, a curly cut is for you! I recommend this to anyone who wears their hair curly the majority of the time.

Ready for your custom curly cut? My info is in the bio!

If you’re still reading this, comment your funny/traumatic haircut experiences!

🙋🏾‍♀️I’ll go first… I had a stylist flat iron my hair and couldn’t get it even. She kept trying to “even it up”. She ended up letting me leave lop sided. (Which I was fine with cause my hair went from bra strap length to a little longer than my shoulders after she was done. I didn’t want to go any shorter!) 😳

Ok, your turn! Comment below with your story!

Janeira came in for a curly detox and curly cut.

I’m big on creating a relationship with my clients so that they don’t worry if I’m going to cut more than what they’re ready for. Janeira didn’t want a tight taper cut right now. She wanted more of a tapered bob. We spent time during the consultation talking about her hair habits, favorite styles, and goals.

With all of that info and some inspo pictures, this is the shape we came up with for her. It looks flattering and full.

But the biggest thing for me is making her natural hair look “on purpose”. Like remember back in our relaxer days when we went to the salon and picked a style? I want your everyday wash and go to look like a style. A style that you would want to pick. To achieve that, you need to choose a great shape. Think of Halle Berry, Nia Long, or Toni Braxton shapes. Remember the stacked bobs from the 90s? What about that being translated into a wash and go?

I’m currently training to learn how to cut these shapes for kinky hair through . Their mastermind program is really changing the game for natural hair. You can even check out their program for consumers through .

But if you’re not ready for a super tight taper or the shape I’m suggesting, that’s ok with me. Because you have to wear it everyday. I believe we can come up with something together that you’re comfortable with and that we can adjust as time goes on.

I appreciate Janeira trusting me with her hair journey. I can’t wait to see how her hair transforms.

Are you ready to start your journey with me? Let’s change the prespective of natural hair here in Omaha. Let’s show how polished and sharp natural hair can be. Let me help you not even desire to see your hair straight again!😉 When you’re ready, you know how to find me!
