Every business has their difficulties, some more than others, and with in different areas. However, the one I see the most among businesses is new . Already own a truck, you already have all the tools, and you have already the knowledge? But, how do you get customers to choose your or to even find you?
Every situation is different and I don't have the answer for everyone but besides buying business cards and handing them out every living soul you come in contact with, I'll tell you how I did it.
I first purchased 300 12" x 18" yard signs, with simplest wordage I could use to get my point across. Example:
Yard Waste? # # #- # # #- # #
I placed the signs in open areas where the grass was just cut near stations, grocery stores, and churches.
After a month or two of the rolling in from this advertising I use that to roll into paper advertising. I went around to all the gas stations and grocery stores in my area looking for small coupon books and to place an ad. Again, keeping the most simplest advertising wordage that I can use however, I made sure that my advertising was within the first 10 pages and took up an entire page.
From there I learned as much about advertising that I possibly could and started a campaign.
When your area is saturated with companies that do the same thing as you and with just as many, or more, five star reviews; how do you set yourself apart?
You don't. Be the best version of yourself, take care of the customer to your fullest degree, and don't worry about the guy next to you.
This is a great example of why a picture is quite useless when it comes to bidding a job without physically seeing it. Would you guess that this stump in the picture is 4' x 6'? Would you also guess about how long it would take to completely remove the stump? Can you also see the six large running roots in the picture? No, no, and no! From a picture your guess is as good as mine. After everything was said and done I was in and out with my industrial sized remote control stump grinder within 45 minutes.  I was able to significantly lower my original on-site bid because the wood was much more deteriorated than I thought by initial estimates. Nearly cutting in half bids from other companies.
You can be assured with one of two things when getting bids from companies that have never seen the stump in the flesh. They will either significantly over bid the job to cover their end in case the job is not described correctly, or they will significantly under bid the job and then blame you for the miscommunication and require a higher payment; or at minimum, do a sh*tty job for what they quoted.
A good percentage of my customer base describe this same story to me when I am called out to regrind on another's handy work. "Stump Grinding Company X did a poor job and I keep hitting it with my lawnmower."
