Case study of my career.

When I had my first phone consultation with Louis, I was unsure if I could help him. At the age of 59, he was no longer able to walk without a walker, he was not able to feel his left thigh or foot for almost a year, was having difficulty with bowel movements, and when he did, his left arm and hand would shake. He was in dire need of some help.
Louis had seen several doctors that performed lumbar surgery (laminectomy and fusion), steroid injections, radio frequency, physical therapy, and massage therapy. He had no results after thousands of dollars spent on MRIs and numerous modalities to try and help him.
As you can imagine, he was feeling helpless, unable to work, staying home, and becoming depressed. I told him I was not sure I could help him, but I would try my hardest.

During our first visit, I asked many questions and learned that Louis was playing golf for a few years, up to 4 days a week, and had a very intense swing. One day he went down after a swing and needed help up. A lot of his problems got severe after this.
This information made sense to me, knowing which low back muscles are used while playing golf and the nerves that can be affected.
Not one doctor asked him how he injured himself. His issues seemed to stem from his QL, ES group, and Psoas muscles. Digging for answers can change a person’s health, but medical professionals must take the time to do so.

The day after our first session with Louis, he stated he was getting some sensation in his left foot and had two bowel movements without straining or shaking his arms. After our third session, he could feel the cold water on his foot for the first time in almost a year.
When Louis showed up for his 4th appointment, he used a cane, said he got rid of the walker, and even went to the gym because he felt so good. After our 8th session, we did a before and after pic so you can see how much straighter he could stand and stand without a walker or a cane.

Louis is one of the most driven patients that I have had the pleasure of working with. He listened to my suggestions, would do his at-home exercises, stretches, and movement in the pool, and kept a positive mindset and focused on the small improvements. One of my happiest days was when he showed up for his appointment without a cane. Watching him be able to put his shoes on while standing was a happy moment.

When I asked Louis, “What are the things you can do now that you were unable to do before we started your treatment plan” I was blown away and touched. He stated, “I can go to the bathroom making a bowel movement without my left arm and hand shaking uncontrollably, I’m able to stand in the shower instead of having to sit, I’m back to work getting up to 21 carts ready for golfers, I can clean my home, cook for myself, wash my clothes, do gardening, walk, able to stretch on the floor, do yoga, wash my car, go out to eat, go to a venue, and see my mother at the nursing home.

Louis is not 100%, and I’m not sure he will ever be due to the structural damage from surgery and how his vertebrae healed. However, he is back to enjoying himself with friends and family. It’s the simple things in life. I’m grateful to have been able to help Louis get to where he is today. This case has taught me a lot about the body and, most notably, about not giving up.
