Today, CWS is hosting an interfaith Virtual Day of Prayer in solidarity with our Ukrainian neighbors and refugees around the world. At 7 PM ET, we will join together with other members of faith in prayer to call for peace, comfort and action.
Tonight's speakers include Pastor Denis Sichkar (First Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church), Rev. Pat de Jong (United Church of Christ), Imam Saffet Abid Catovic (Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Rev. Sharon Stanley Rea (Disciples of Christ), CWS's President/CEO Rick Santos and CWS's Rev. Noel Anderson.

As Covid is still among us and rain with potential storms were in Sunday's forecast, I am grateful for the small but dedicated group of walkers raising money and awareness about hunger. I'm thankful for those who supported the Big Rapids CROP Hunger Walk through leadership, prayer, donation and walking. Over $5,500 was raised! THANK YOU for making a difference in our community and our world for many suffering hunger and poverty, displacement and disaster.

The CROP Hunger Walks raise funds for Church World Service (CWS) which has programs for persons experiencing disaster, displacement, and hunger and poverty. A portion of the 75% that stays with CWS is helping families from Afghanistan rebuild their lives here in the U.S. and helping communities in Dominican Republic develop their own gardens, farms, and fishing ponds so they have many ways to stand strong in extreme situations. Your funds raised are also being used for long term recovery after Hurricane Ida and after the earthquake in Haiti. THANK YOU from Church World Service for your hard work in raising funds to help your neighbors locally and across the world.

This year’s 25% of local raised funds go to Project Starburst and Our Brother’s Keeper.

Details for 10/3/2021

1:30 pm Registration with Sendoff for 2:00 Walk

Meet at the FSU IRC (Interdisciplinary Resource Center) and you may park in the parking lot across from the stadium near IRC.

Please bring:
-Your walker envelope and all donations collected. No cash please.

-Masks are required in the FSU IRC (inside any FSU building) and recommended on the walk. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. There will be a separate COVID liability waiver from CWS at registration.

Weather - There is a chance of rain and storms. Please bring raincoats or umbrellas. We will plan to walk. IF there is lightning and need to cancel the walk, I will still be at the FSU IRC at 1:30 pm (registration time) to collect all envelopes and monies. I then encourage all walkers to walk on their own during the week. Prayers please for it to not be storming during the walk.The weather forecast I currently see is a chance of rain most the day with thunderstorms specifically from 2pm-8pm. Please watch your emails for any updates regarding the weather and the walk possibly starting earlier (1:00 maybe) or cancelling. In addition I will attempt to text or call with updates for those I have phone numbers or I can be reached at 815-297-4436.

Route - Short and Long Routes

The beginning of the route this year goes out the IRC doors by the parking lot and on North Campus Drive (instead of out the front doors to State St) to Warren Ave.

Both Routes start and end at the FSU IRC.

Rest Stop for both routes at First United Methodist Church and the long route also has a rest stop at Third Avenue Methodist Church.

Routes are marked with signs, specifically at any route turn.

The Big Rapids Amateur Radio Club with walkie talkies will also be along the route to help with directions and safety.

The Big Rapids CROP Hunger Walk is Sunday, October 3. Registration is 1:30 pm and walk starts at 2:00 pm. Please consider registering to walk or donating. Funds go to Church World Service which have programs for displacement, disaster, and hunger/poverty here and around the world. Of the funds raised here in our walk, 25 percent will stay local and go to Protect Starburst and Our Brothers Keeper.
