Public Talk in Springfield Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m.: “Ciphering, Reading, and Community in the One-Room Schools of Greene County”
SPRINGFIELD, MO – The Greene County Historical Society will sponsor a public lecture on the history of one-room schools in Greene County by David Burton of the University of Missouri Extension. The event will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday May 15, 2022 in the Historic Fox Theatre, part of the History Museum on the Square in downtown Springfield.
“Ciphering, Reading, and Community in the One-Room Schools of Greene County” will explore the role of these quintessential public institutions in the life of Ozarks communities. Speaker David Burton is the author of A History of the Rural Schools in Greene County, Mo and the Missouri Directory of Historic and One-room Schools, along with a Driving Tour of One-Room Schools in the Ozarks. Greene County engagement specialist for MU Extension, Burton is a graduate of Ash Grove High School and Drury University, where he earned a master’s degree in communications and a bachelor’s of arts degree in political science.
There were once as many as 124 one-room schools in Greene County. According to Burton, “The schoolhouse was a gathering place for everything from pie suppers and church meetings to holiday and political events. Such gatherings were a vital source of communication in rural communities, and they helped knit together the scattered population.” Still a part of the Ozarks landscape, they are visible reminders of our rural history.
Founded in 1954, the Greene County Historical Society’s mission is to foster and maintain an interest in the history of Springfield and Greene County.
