(Educational Purposes)

❗️Chorioamnionitis (intra-amniotic infection). Its name is derived from the two membranes that surround a fetus in your uterus: the chorion and the amnion.

❗️This infection occurs when bacteria enter any of the tissues or membranes around a fetus. This includes:

Chorion (outer membrane).
Amnion (inner membrane).
Placenta
Amniotic fluid

❗️Treatment usually involves antibiotics and/or delivery (if not in labor).
❗️It can lead to life-threatening complications in both you and your baby if it’s left untreated.

Chorioamnionitis occurs in about 1%-5% of births in the US and is one of the causes of premature labor and delivery.

R I S K F A C T O R S:

❗️Premature labor
❗️Prolonged rupture of membranes
❗️vaginal infections or sexually transmitted infection (STI), including BV.
❗️frequent vaginal exams
❗️Internal fetal or uterine monitoring.
❗️Amniocentesis
❗️Untreated urinary tract infections
❗️Smoking or drinking alcohol

Uterine infection can cause the following complications:

❗️preterm (pre-labor) rupture of the membranes (waters breaking early)
❗️premature birth

❗️infections in the mother after birth
❗️heavy bleeding after birth
❗️neonatal sepsis (infection in the baby)
❗️Maternal Sepsis
❗️Dysfunctional labor
