In 2001 I started building sheds in a manufacturing facility when I was 16 years old. Now 23 years later I'm still in the shed industry surrounded by many excellent freelance craftsmen. Our Beginnings and Philosophy
I grew up in Lebanon County Pennsylvania in the small village of Waldeck (an old high German name meaning "wood" "corner"). We lived on a small 4 acre homestead where my father was born and raised. My father operated the small family woodworking shop which was started by my grandfather back in 1956.

As a child I spent many hours working side by side with my father and grandfather, building furniture and tinkering on my own projects in the wood shop. It was here that I learned the elements of craftsmanship and hard work, but most of all the character and stories that shape the foundations of my life.

In the early 2000's, at the age of 16, I moved to western Massachusetts with my family. I had the opportunity to become the first employee of a newly developing storage shed company. Being the first employee, I soon shifted to foreman and then shop manager as the company grew. I spent over a decade in this environment, managing production of the sheds as well as learning to better understand people and navigate complex relationships.

After many years and building thousands of sheds in western Massachusetts, I moved to Boston in 2014. I naturally got back into building sheds again, this time starting my own business, Urban Sheds.

Having my own business, I had a lot of flexibility to innovate in the way things were done. I started building the sheds onsite and liked the ability to work directly with my customers vs. building sheds in a manufacturing plant. I found that by building the sheds onsite I could create better connections with my customers and create better storage solutions that fit their exact needs. I also found in working with the customers, that solving their storage problems was often the beginning of a cascade of events that improved the customers lives.

When a customer comes to us for a new shed, it isn't just a shed they are looking for. They are looking for order in their life. Whether they need an old shed torn down and rebuilt or a new storage space to move things from a full basement or garage, a shed provides the necessary structure to create order out of the chaos.

Fundamentally a storage problem is a problem of placement or categorization. When we don’t have the proper space, we end up storing things in places that would be better stored somewhere else. The bikes may be fine in the basement while you are on vacation but when you get home, the bikes may be in the way as well as frustrating to access if you want to use them.

By creating new areas of space, sheds help separate things into useful categories. Garden tools stored in the entryway or on the deck or in the garage, if disrupting our routines, become obstacles that make us ineffective in our daily activities. Creating "distinct space" or "useful categories" is the first step in bringing order to the chaos. When we compartmentalize things according to their purpose or use, we gain control of the “chaos of stuff” and streamline our lives making us more effective in the world.

The foundation of all human activity could be construed as “the continual categorization and placement of things”. We ask the question “how is this used?” or “what is its purpose?” and then move and place it accordingly.

The world is constantly changing and with the process of time, things that once were in a useful place may feel more like an obstacle. A snowblower stored in the garage in the winter time may be useful but once spring comes it may become an obstacle as you need the garage space for spring projects. Continually reordering things as needed is the key to maintaining control of your environment.

Time changes the meaning of things and we can feel within ourselves when something is no longer fulfilling its purpose where it is and should be moved. If we don't move things we consider obstacles, we end up stressed and stagnated in our activities. This goes a lot deeper than the condition of the garage…this is how life works. Failure to act or move forward in the face of obstacles or fears, leaves us feeling stressed and out of control of our shrinking world.

Starting with small things like cleaning up the garage or basement is often the first step in finding the courage to face the larger issues of work or family.

We celebrate stories of “the hero”. The hero is the one who, though vulnerable, courageously conquers the things that are out of control. You are the hero, and stronger than you think.

We are in the storage shed industry but we also care about you, and desire to create a better world.
