Parents are you interested in having your girl join Girl Scouts? Come join us on May 14th, 2024, at our Outdoor Survivor Workshop to learn more about how you and your daughter can get involved. The magic and fun of Camp Lakota awaits you! Nestled in Frazier Park, this Girl Scout camp is a hidden gem of classic camp activities. Lakota offers exciting opportunities for the first-time camper as well as the seasoned camper. From the thrill of horseback riding, swimming in the sparkling pool, zip lining, taking aim at archery, traveling across the low ropes, and enjoying new friendships around the flickering campfire, Lakota truly has something for everyone. With emphasis placed on teamwork and building community, campers develop strong bonds and leadership skills and make lifelong friends. Campers go home with a stronger feeling of independence and self-esteem and an incredible sense of accomplishment and belonging. Exciting adventures, new friends, and memories to last a lifetime are here at Camp Lakota.

Two local Girl Scouts - Katherine Ellersick and Ava Bordeau were recently awarded Student of the Month certificates by the Santa Monica Elks Lodge.

Katherine is a super star soccer player and outstanding 11th grade student at Notre Dame Academy. She is currently working on her Gold Award. She is a 10 year Girl Scout in the Holly Hills Service Unit, Troop 16135.

Ava, a senior at Santa Monica High School, is currently applying to college with high academic honors and received her Gold Award in 2020, focused on Diabetes Awareness. She is in the Santa Monica/Bay Service Unit, Troop 1645.

Girl Scouts who participate in Girl Scout STEM programs show more interest in studying STEM subjects, according to a survey by the Scouts, and most will recommend the Girl Scout STEM program to their friends.

Girl Scouts introduced the technology badge in the 1980s, signaling the importance of girls' participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs.

Nearly 90% of parents surveyed by the Girl Scouts reported their daughters get a greater variety of experiences from their troops than from other extracurricular activities. These Girl Scouts from 2014 would probably agree. Some 78% of Girl Scouts surveyed report having leadership experiences, compared to a national sample of 55% of girls and 61% of boys.

A Girl Scout Junior helps Girl Scout Brownies with cookie deliveries, circa 1984. "Cookies are so much more than a fundraiser," says psychologist Andrea Bastiani Archibald, the Girl Scouts' chief girls expert. "When someone buys a box of cookies, they're helping girls develop their financial literacy skills, their social skills ... and their business ethics. Girls can carry these skills into the rest of their lives."

Girl Scout Troop 415 gave a generous donation of 138 Homeless Kits to The African American Firefighter Museum (AAFFM). Girl Scout Ambassador Elise Knebel (standing) from Troop 16135 is pictured with fellow scouts Maddie and Rhiannon Camarillo.
