Dogtor Miya and Wayne are the puppies of a 3rd year veterinary student who is trying to bridge the gap between Veterinary Medicine and the animals and people that we love.
Brady and I celebrated our marriage on June 4th and we just got our photos! Celebrating our love with our people was so much fun!!! Huge thanks to our parents for making the day so wonderful ๐
Truly couldnโt have done any of this without Brady๐
So blessed that so many vet school friends made the trip up to celebrate with us (first picture)
is the best! Highly recommend for those in the Cincinnati area!!!

Is this the large animal version of cuddling puppies and kittens? ๐
The past two weeks Iโve been on my Practice Based Equine Rotation at ! Iโve gotten to experience so many cool things (including a goat cheese testing) and have an even larger respect for equine veterinarians than I already had before!
If you have an interest in equine medicine or are looking for a veterinarian in North Central, FL I highly recommend! They have al podcast and blog with excellent educational material which Iโll link in my story!
Thatโs a wrap on my large animal rotations. Next, Iโm onto an externship at a spay/neuter clinic๐ฅฐ
Are you interested in hearing about my last months clinical rotations?
Itโs been a whole year since I started Doggie Dogtors! ๐พ๐ฉบ
I never imagined I would reached so many people across the world in just one year. I canโt express to yโall how much I appreciate your support. Canโt wait to continue providing pet care education so all the wonderful pet owners can keep making informed decisions for their animals ๐พ
What do you want to learn more about your pets?
Merry Christmas friends! We hope everyone has a wonderful day with people and pups they love whether you celebrate or not! ๐โค๏ธ
Hereโs a throwback from the last day of my first year because today I took my last exam in vet school ๐ฑ
Just one more semester of clinics and then Iโm Dr. Maria Bonavita ๐ค
I didnโt realize this needed to be said.
If you havenโt seen, there was an article recently published that claims the current veterinary shortage is due to the education system coddling and teaching veterinary students about work life balance so new graduate veterinarians are no longer hard workers. Oh, and since most veterinary students are women, theyโll all want to get married and have babies then leave the field or work part time.
As a current fourth year vet student who just went through the process of finding my first job, hereโs my perspective:
Veterinary medicine is amazing and I am so excited to be a veterinarian soon. This doesnโt mean that it should consume my entire life.
I chose my first job because they value their team and try to give everyone a good work life balance. I chose my first job because of the support I will receive and how everyone treats each other with so much kindness. I chose my first job because of their culture.
The article also mentions that new graduates are just after the money. Corporations are offering some pretty significant benefits and bonuses right now but Iโll just speak for myself in saying that matters much less than CULTURE. I feel lucky that my school teaches us business and negotiation skills so that we can make what we are worth so we are able to pay off our sizable loans. Again though, I would take much less money for a place that I am happy and supported.
The culture of Veterinary Medicine may be changing, but I think thatโs a good thing.
Proof of Wayne being the most wonderful volunteer ๐
Happy ๐
Spent the weekend celebrating the love of one of my vet school besties this weekend ๐ It was such a perfect day yesterday and wonderful to be with my friends this weekend.
Itโs not always easy to be on social media every day. Donโt get me wrong, I love helping people become more educated about their pets. I try to let things roll off my back as much as possible, but after spending late nights responding to comments and creating content it would be a lie to say I donโt think about it.
Iโm a little over a month away from taking my board exam and will be slowing down my post frequency both to focus more on studying and prioritize my mental health.
Hope you are able to prioritize your health today and everyday. You deserve it โค๏ธ
SO excited to announce that we are selling Doggie Dogtors stickers and decals!

Anyone have anything exciting planned? ๐๐ผ
Wishing the happiest of birthdays to my husband! He is the best dog dad ever and the most supportive human๐
Without him, this account probably wouldnโt still be going! We are ready to chill and watch football all day ๐
Happy Birthday Brady! ๐
Happy Wednesday! Hope yโall are able to enjoy some outside time today โ๏ธ Itโs a rainy one today in Gainesville so we will be playing and snuggling inside!
โHey lil mama let me whisper in your earโโฆ. about the things Bernese Mountain Dogs are predisposed to ๐
A few of yโall asked me to explain the things I said about BMD and I am happy to do so! Going forward Iโm going to try to include a quick explanation about some of the diseases I mention in the caption, but for now here are the things I said about Bernese Mountain Dogs:
โข ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐๐ฒ๐ญ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ or Disseminated Histiocytic Sarcoma. This is an aggressive cancer of histiocytes (an immune cell) which occurs in many places in the body at one time. Unfortunately the prognosis is not good for this disease.
โข ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐จ๐๐ก๐จ๐ง๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ: This is a developmental disorder of cartilage/bone growth (endochondral ossification) in growth plates. A flap of cartilage can detach and float in the joint space which will cause issues and need to be removed.
โข ๐๐ฌ๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐๐๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ: or Steroid-Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis. This is non-infectious inflammation of the meninges and blood vessels throughout the spinal cord and brain stem causing fever, neck pain and rigidity.
Happy ๐พ
Are you doing anything to celebrate? Miya thinks we will just snuggle ๐
My last โfirst day of school picโ ๐ฑ
At our last year contains a semester of classes in the fall and a semester of clinics in the spring, with a sprinkle of NAVLE (our licensing exam) in November ๐

Wayne got his semi-annual check up and vaccines this week!
He is due for a dental exam and cleaning soon, but otherwise received a clean bill of health! Having your pet checked out by your veterinarian regularly is extremely important to catch things early!
When is your pet due for their next check up?
When dad says โmake a weird face!โ
Yesterday we went for a walk and then had quite the lazy Sunday. Mom studied for her board exam while we snuggled on the couch!
Hope everyone has a great week!

Hey everyone! Weโve had some new followers recently so we figured we would re-introduce ourselves!
I am Maria and I am a 4th year veterinary student at the University of Florida. I really love educating people about their pets so they feel confident in making the best decisions for them with their veterinarian. When not doing animal things, I enjoy hanging with my husband, dogs, & friends, playing volleyball, drinking beer and munching on a charcuterie board!
These are my puppies Miya & Wayne (aka the dogtors and inspiration of this account). Miya is a 4 year old rescue that we adopted when she was 2! She is a ball of energy and the best cuddler in the world๐
Wayne is a 1.5 year old harlequin Great Dane who we bought when he was 12 weeks old. He is super goofy, loves his sister the most, and thinks he weighs approximately 5lbs ๐
As I said, we love educating pet owners about their babies, so please let us know if there is any topics in pet care or vet med that you want to learn more about!
Our mom is away for the month for externships and is missing us and our dad! What do you guys do when you miss your puppies?
Small photo dump of me chilaxing last weekend๐พโบ๏ธ
Hoping everyone has a wonderful weekend and gets to spend it with their favorite people and animals โค๏ธ๐
Please give your veterinary clinic some notice when you need medication! Letโs keep our pets as comfortable as we can this holiday! ๐

Did you know that about 20% of dogs and cats develop osteoarthritis?
Today, is here to tell us about joint supplements!
Itโs important to note that supplements are NOT regulated by the FDA, and you should always consult your veterinarian before starting a new supplement. Most are safe but they can have side effects.
Many joint supplements contain ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin, green-lipped mussel, omega-3s, avocado soybean unsaponifiables, boswellia serrata, UC-II and vitamin D which can have anti-inflammatory, cartilage protective and cartilage building properties when in the right formulation and quantity.
Unfortunately, because supplements are not regulated, there is no guarantee that they contain the amount of ingredients claimed on the label. ConsumerLab.com did testing on some available supplements and approved Cosequin Maximum Stength plus MSM, Liquid Health Naturals K9 Glucosamine, Pet Naturals of Vermont Hip + Joint Dogs & Cats, NaurVet Advanced Care ArthriSoothe (-Gold), and 21st Century Essential Pet Adult Hip & Joint for containing the labeled amounts and not exceeding contamination limits of lead, arsenic, or DMSO. Not all products were tested and you can always contact companies to see if they do independent testing.
The only FDA approved disease modifying osteoarthritis drug is Adequan Canine. This product is an injection given by your veterinarian which treats the disease process by slowing cartilage breakdown, promoting repair of damaged cartilage, and decreasing inflammation.
The mainstays of treating osteoarthritis are still weight control, consistent low impact exercise, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Hopefully better studies are done soon and supplements are regulated so they can be recommended based on more solid research!
Does your pet take any joint supplements?
