Following the depression, My dad was a violinist with both the Houston and Dallas symphonies. Clearly music was an integral part of my childhood. I started with piano and trumpet but switched to drums in middle school because of asthma. In my youth, I played with many bands ( rock, funk, jazz ) and later in Houston’s All City Orchestra and as a staff musician for AstroWorld (the Six Flags Park in Houston). Later I played in the Praise Band at First United Methodist in Sugar Land. In DFW, I play with the Maxwell Hall Jazz Band, Southlake Swing Band and the E. Ft. Worth Community Jazz Band. I also sub for the MetroPraise Jazz Band. My favorite bands are Tower of Power, Snarky Puppy, Mingo Fishtrap and Phat Phunktion! Tom Halbouty
One cool cat on guitar! The phenomenal David Clay.
Playing music started early in my life. I used to stand over my mother's shoulder playing the saxophone or clarinet while she played gospel songs on the piano when I was very young. She inspired me to continue giving back the measure of talent that God has given me. I played in the Ft. Worth ISD music program from the 3rd through 12th grade and was accepted in the Air Force Band after high school. The entire time that I was learning and playing woodwinds in school, I was learning the guitar at home on my own.
Today I enjoy playing in local venues in North Central Texas, primarily in the Fort Worth and Dalla area. I play guitar with the "Metro Praise Orchestra," a jazz big band; and the "East Fort Worth Community Jazz Band," a jazz big band made up of many of the area music teachers; the "Texas Bleu Catz,' a classic rock-n-roll band; and on any given Sunday morning, you'll find me playing one of my saxophones at my local Baptist church.
I also teach music lessons from my home studio, primarily guitar, sax, clarinet, and flute.
I love all aspects of music. I write music, record songs, and collaborate with other artists across the globe. David Clay
