The fires in Canada are a stark reminder for us all to sign up for alerts, make a plan and pack a bag....

After the immediate threat of the earthquake has passed, your level of preparedness will help you reconnect and restore daily life by reuniting with others, repairing damage, and rebuilding community.

Safety First: Check your surroundings. Evacuate if necessary and help the injured.
Check In: Leave a trail. Text and if leaving your home, leave a sign telling friends you’re ok
Stay Tuned: Monitor your local Broadcast stations & reliable social channels for important information and instructions

Check the Marin County Emergency Portal and/or County social media channels immediately following an earthquake for updates and recovery information.

During the next big earthquake, is when your level of preparedness will make a difference in how you and others survive and can respond. Drop, Cover, and Hold on or Lock (wheels), Cover, and Hold On – if you feel shaking or get an alert.

If you are in a car, pull over and stop. Set your parking brake.
If you are in bed, turn face down and cover your head and neck with a pillow.
If you are outdoors, stay outdoors away from buildings.
If you are inside, stay and do not run outside and avoid doorways.

Stay safe this rainy season by preparing for flooding. Aside from cleaning gutters and clearing debris from drains, below are some tips on how to prepare and what not to do in floods.

Prepare: Sandbag in advance. Visit emergency.marincounty.org/pages/flooding for locations of sand bagging resources across Marin
Make a Plan: Decide now how you'll get home or reconnect with your householdDo build up a 5 day supply of food, water & medication for everyone in your home
Do not attempt to cross flood water by vehicle or on foot
Do stay indoors unless instructed to leave by emergency services
Do move vehicles to a higher location if possible
Do use flashlights, not candles, if the power is out

Recipe for a safe holiday gathering

Be ready for wildfire season! Fire Safe Marin recommends all Marin residents have a AM/FM/NOAA Weather Radio.

NOAA Weather Radio is an automated 24-hour network of VHF FM weather radio stations. The National Weather Service sends out Red Flag Warnings and other extreme weather warnings through this radio-based system. Local agencies may also issue evacuation notices through this system, providing a backup notification to homes that may be without power or cellular communication range.
