Last Friday, in what has become a yearly tradition, we welcomed back the ICS Class of 2015 which is about to graduate from high school. They visited their old classrooms, had dinner, looked at their 8th grade slideshow and had of moment of prayer in our chapel. We are so proud of these Celtics as they prepare to go off to some great colleges and universities.

Immaculate Conception School was founded in 1954 with the help of five Sisters of Mercy from Ireland (see pic #2). They shaped the school from the very beginning and you can see the “Irish” influence today in the school colors green☘️and blue, of course the Celtics name as well as Mercy Hall. ICC was the second Catholic school in Hialeah (St.John opened in 1949). The school opened just a few months after the Church, it was aimed at serving the sparsely populated north side of Hialeah.
The church and school as we know it today were built in 1964 (the iconic steeple was one of the highest structures around and could be seen for miles) it coincided with a major influx of Cuban exiles coming into the area, most of whom were catholic. It is interesting to note that while public schools were indifferent or downright hostile towards new arrivals, ICC on the other hand was incredibly welcoming and kind to refugees, the Catholic charities helped many struggling families long before there was any sort of government help.
The school today has over 400 students, Immaculate Conception is not only one of the most historic and beautiful schools in Hialeah, it is also one of the highest rated academically with a small 15-1 student/teacher ratio. Perhaps its best accomplishment is how it enjoys a tremendous “Legacy” culture, it’s heartwarming to see how many former students come back to enroll their own kids (and even grandkids) to continue the tradition. Their alumni list is quite impressive, leaders in almost every field like politics, law, business and entertainment. What class were you? 💒
Btw Huge thanks to who saved dozens of original pictures from the trash and took the time to scan them and preserve them 🙏
