For many years student-athletes were severely restricted in how they could financially benefit or be compensated for the effort they put in to facilitate this market.
This changed in July of 2021 when the NCAA backed off limiting how student-athletes can benefit from their ability and celebrity. The NCAA created new rules that allowed players to benefit and be directly compensated for their Name, Image, & Likeness - practically referred to as NIL.
