KYTC Announces Planning Study for Potential New Interchange on I-64
Public meetings to be held August 28 and

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 11, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announces the planning study (item no. 5-80000) for a potential new interchange on Interstate 64 in eastern Jefferson County/western Shelby County.
Throughout the course of the next year, the study will explore the needs for a potential new interchange on I-64 in eastern Jefferson County/western Shelby County by quantifying the benefits, costs, and impacts associated with a range of solutions – including the consideration of environmental constraints and community perspectives. In addition to considering a potential new I-64 interchange, the study will evaluate potential routes connecting U.S. 60 to the north (near Eastwood) to KY 155/KY 148 to the south (near Fisherville).
Currently, motorists do not have access to I-64 between I-265 and KY 1848, a distance of nearly 9 miles. The lack of connectivity results in longer travel times and contributes to delayed emergency response times on I-64 as well as U.S. 60, KY 155/KY 148 and other area roadways.
In 2008, a similar study identified traffic congestion from a lack of roadway connectivity as the top need. The 2008 study considered several corridors before it recommended a western interchange and connector with four lanes and bicycle/pedestrian facilities – predating the creation of The Parklands of Floyds Fork.
In coming months, analysts will model future traffic flows in a travel demand model – taking into account expected household and employment growth patterns through 2045. This tool will then allow the project team to test what-if scenarios to determine which areas would receive the most benefit from new potential traffic connections.
Public meetings will be held to share information and gather input from residents and motorists. Since this project affects communities north and south of I-64, meetings will be held in both areas. Handouts containing information about the project and comment sheets will be available at the meeting. Representatives from KYTC and their design consultant will be in attendance to answers questions from residents and roadway users.
Input received from the 2023 public meetings and survey efforts will be compiled and considered as potential study concepts are developed. Outreach will continue throughout the course of the study, with a second public meeting anticipated for spring 2024 to collect input on build concepts.

Fern Creek Library Update from LFPL
Several weeks ago a survey went out to library patrons in the 40291 ZIP code and surrounding areas, asking what they would like to see in their new Fern Creek Library. We shared that feedback with the design architects, and library leadership met with them to discuss the next steps in the design process. When preliminary designs are drawn up, we will hold a public meeting for residents to provide additional input.

Buechel Bypass Bridge Closure Set for This Weekend in Jefferson County
Closure necessary as contractor advances on repairs to bridge
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 16, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of the weekend closure of the bridge carrying Buechel Bypass (U.S. 31E/U.S. 150) over a set of railroad tracks in Jefferson County.
The bridge will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday, March 17, to 5 a.m. on Monday, March 20, between mile point 10.4 and mile point 10.5. That’s between the cross streets of Plaza Avenue and Hikes Lane. During the bridge closure, signs in the area will direct drivers to utilize Hikes Lane, Shepherdsville Road, Buechel Bank Road, and Progress Boulevard as the posted detour.
Various closures have been in place for the bridge since a February 2021 inspection found deterioration on one of the bridge’s pier caps. The repairs were initially delayed as KYTC, and the contractor sought approval from the railroad to work on the bridge section over the tracks. Last year, crews began working under the bridge, in an area not visible to motorists crossing the span. Those repairs have now advanced to a point where the weekend closure of the entire bridge is necessary. The repairs are expected to be completed in spring 2023.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Fern Creek Leaders and Miracle League Celebrate Construction of New Accessible Restrooms and Pavilion
Louisville, KY: Metro Council member Robin Engel (District 22) along with Council colleagues, a representative from the Mayor’s Office, the Miracle League of Louisville and WEHR Constructors will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the latest improvements to Fern Creek Park.
“Twenty years ago we began investing in this park through improvements to many of the ball fields. About five years ago, we were approached by representatives from the Building Industry of Louisville and the newly formed Miracle League about a partnership to bring more inclusive facilities and athletic opportunities to the park. These efforts have led to the construction of a turf ballfield, fully accessible playground and now, new accessible restrooms and a pavilion.”– Metro Councilman Robin Engel, District 22
“The Miracle League of Louisville is very excited for the opening of the new pavilions and renovated restrooms for our Miracle League ball players, their families and friends. We are extremely grateful for our dedicated partners, including Louisville Metro government, Councilman Robin Engel, Fern Creek Babe Ruth , Wehr Constructors, and so many others who are dedicated to this endeavor. Let’s play ball!” - Shawn Freibert, Miracle League of Louisville
The ribbon cutting ceremony will occur, rain or shine, tomorrow, March 17, 2023 at noon at Fern Creek Park (8703 Ferndale Road). Attendees will have the opportunity to see the new facilities as well as see the impact the approximately $1 million in investments in the park has had in making Fern Creek Park one of the most welcoming parks in Louisville Metro. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet the Miracle League Mascot Homer as well as many of the other partners who have helped to make this project a success.
“One of our corporate core values is ‘WEHR Fun’, and what is more fun than watching children engage, learn, and grow through play? WEHR Constructors is humbled to have played a small part in supporting Miracle League of Louisville’s mission of removing barriers to children with mental and physical disabilities. We hope the continued improvements we are recognizing today continue to remove those barriers and make play - FUN!” - Shawn Woosley, CFO WEHR Constructors

Buechel Bypass Bridge Closure Set for This Weekend in Jefferson County
Closure necessary as contractor advances on repairs to bridge
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 26, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of the weekend closure of the bridge carrying Buechel Bypass (U.S. 31E/U.S. 150) over a set of railroad tracks in Jefferson County.
The bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, to 7 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, from mile point 10.4 to mile point 10.5. That’s between the cross streets of Plaza Avenue and Hikes Lane. During the bridge closure, signs in the area will direct drivers to utilize Hikes Lane, Shepherdsville Road, Buechel Bank Road and Progress Boulevard as the posted detour.
When the Buechel Bypass bridge reopens, the closure of a southbound lane, northbound lane and the northbound off-ramp to Progress Way will be reinstituted. One lane of traffic on the bridge will remain open in both directions.
The various closures were instituted after a February 2021 inspection found deterioration on one of the bridge’s pier caps. The repairs were initially delayed as KYTC and the contractor sought approval from the Norfolk Southern Railroad to work on the bridge section over the tracks. Last year, crews began working under the bridge, in an area not visible to motorists crossing the span. Those repairs have now advanced to a point where the weekend closure of the entire bridge is necessary. The repairs are expected to be completed in spring 2023.

Storm Debris Collection Plan
Residents of Jefferson County are invited to drop off storm debris for free. This includes all tree debris and bulky waste from storm damage. Since all tree debris will be composted, it must be separate from bulky waste for easy off-loading at each site. Residents will be asked to provide their name and address at the drop-off sites.
Drop-off sites and hours:
• Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane)
• Charlie Vettiner Park, 5550 Charlie Vettiner Park Road (by disc golf course)
• Fern Creek Park, 8703 Ferndale Road
• Highview Park, 7120 Briscoe Lane
• Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue
April 15 – April 30 (or longer if necessary)
Monday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Household hazardous waste will not be accepted.
Contractors and businesses who are hauling debris are invited to use the Waste Reduction Center for the usual fee. See, Louisvilleky.gov/WRC
All yard waste set out for curbside collection in the Urban Services District must follow the regular guidelines: limbs must be less than 4 feet long and less than 2 inches in diameter. All material must be in a container or paper bag or tied into bundles weighing less than 60 lbs. See, Louisvilleky.gov/YardWaste
Hometown Hauling is asking their customers to call their office if they have extra trash or yard waste due to the storm. There may be additional fees for collection, but they are dealing with each customer on a case-by-case basis. Residents serviced by other private waste haulers are encouraged to contact their provider about storm debris removal procedures.
As of Thursday, April 14, Public Works crews are assessing the damage of the hardest hit areas and will create an action plan to address those needs.
Yard Waste All yard waste set out for collection in Jefferson County must be in acceptable containers. Yard waste can be managed at home using Love 'Em and Leave 'Em practices. All of the options are explained here.
LMAS Giving Away Free Dog Crate with Every Adoption of Dogs Weighing 40 Pounds or more through Feb.14
Adoption promotion seeks to find forever homes for larger dogs that make up the majority population of pets currently in the LMAS Shelter
LOUISVILLE, KY (January 18, 2022) – Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) announces ever adopter of a large-breed dog weighing 40lbs. or more will receive a free dog crate for their new four-legged friend through Feb. 14th, thanks to funding from PetSmart Charities.
“We want to help adopters find their pawfect Valentine. While most adopters are looking for a small breed dog or puppy,” said Ashley Book, LMAS interim shelter director. “they are unaware most pets in our shelter are larger dogs whose size is the reason they haven’t been adopted.”
The first weeks in a new home can be stressful for a rescue dog, who must adjust to new people, a new environment, and a new routine. A crate provides a newly adopted pet a place to retreat, where a pet will feel safe while adjusting to life in their new home. Additional benefits of crates include being a great tool for house-training a puppy or new pet, a place to relax, sleep or nap; and can keep dogs out of mischief, when left unsupervised. Crates are also perfect for travel and trips to the veterinarian office.
“This promotion has been very successful in the past,” said Teeya Barnes, LMAS public information specialist. “Adopters not only recognize the many benefits of dog crates, they appreciate not having to purchase one. That’s an incredible value when combined with free adoptions for approved adopters.”
The Pay It Forward Free Adoptions (PIF) Program allows LMAS to waive adoption fees for adult dogs, 40lbs. or more. The PIF program never expires and has found homes for thousands of larger breed dogs that have entered the shelter since 2017, when the program was launched. Spay-Neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included with every adoption. The dog crate giveaway ends Feb. 14th or when supplies run out.
LMAS’ Animal House Adoption Center is located at 3516 Newburg Road. Walk-ins are welcome from 12-6 pm daily. Adoption fees are waived, but the review and approval process are not. Jefferson County residents must also purchase a one-year, renewable pet license - a requirement of the Louisville Animal Ordinance.
For more information about PIF adoptions and to view adoptable pets, visit louisvilleky.gov/animalservices.
About LMAS: Louisville Metro Animal Services operates the city’s only open intake shelter, that for the fifth consecutive year, has not euthanized any pets for lack of time or space. The Harshaw Family Foundation Animal Shelter opened in 2020, creating one campus for all metro animal-related services. In addition to animal control, licensing and microchipping, LMAS offers free adoptions for certain shelter pets through the Pay It Forward Program, that is supported by the non-profit Friends of Metro Animal Services and public donations.
