Home Invasion!? 😎🐍
Wildlife Fun Fact - Unlike a rhinos horn or fingernails on a human, an armadillos plates are made from bone that grow directly out of its vertebrae.

This drought that we are experiencing is causing armadillo Armageddon. We experienced this last summer as well. Anyone who keeps a well irrigated lawn will probably be visited by armadillos soon. The armadillos are attracted to the moist soil which is easy to dig through and is probably holding lots of their favorite snacks. We have developed a three step process to protect your lawn and help prevent future landscape destruction.

Home Invasion!? 😬🐿️
Wildlife Fun Fact - Watching squirrels chase each other through trees is almost like watching Cirque Du Soleil. Fox squirrels can make horizontal leaps up to 15 feet and finish a 20 foot fall with a perfect landing. With these abilities they are able to get on your roof with ease.

Once on your roof, squirrels find easily accessible entry points to get into the attic. Sometimes we provide them with shelter that is easier than chewing into your attic. Solar panels are great, but they provide great cover for squirrels and other animals. They usually chew through the wires and then we get called out.

In the pictures, you will find a mother squirrel who built a large nest under these solar panels. We were able to safely remove the nest and place it on a nearby tree where the mother was able to get to them. After the squirrel nest was removed, we sealed the panels with a steel barrier to prevent the squirrels from returning.

Wildlife Fun Fact - Copperheads are a pit viper, meaning they use their heat sensitive pit organs located between their eyes and nose to lock onto prey. Once locked in, they deliver a bite loaded with a hemolytic venom. Hemotoxic venom damages the circulatory system and muscle tissue while causing swelling, hemorrhaging and necrosis.

Most snake bite ER visits are from people who tried to handle or kill a venomous snake. If you see a snake on your property and want it removed call the professionals. We will come out to remove the snake and provide a thorough inspection to find out why it is on the property.

Wildlife Fun Fact - Armadillos have a long shovel shaped nose and they know how to use it. Their powerful sense of smell helps them locate their food as far as 8 inches underground. Once the food source is located they push the dirt out of the way with their nose and use a long sticky tongue to sn**ch up their dinner.

Wildlife Fun Fact - There are 20 species of armadillo in the world but only the 9 Band Armadillo is found in the United States.

This summer has been an exceptionally busy time for armadillo activity due to the extreme drought Texas is experiencing. The lack of rain has caused food, shelter, and water to become scarce in the wild but remain abundant in our well irrigated neighborhoods. Call us if you are experiencing armadillos foraging or denning on your property. We have a 3 step program to take your yard back safely and humanely.

Wildlife Fun Fact - Raccoons have quite the vocabulary. Studies have shown that they have over 50 different vocalizations to communicate different things!

Travis for the win! Our new team member, Travis, was able to get into a very tight attic and safely remove the kits from the den. This part of the process is very important in evicting the female raccoon. We reunited the kits with their mom and secured the building to prevent re-entry and future wildlife issues!

Wildlife Fun Fact - According to Guinness Book of World Records the largest beaver dam in the world is 2,788’ long located at the Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, Canada. This dam is twice as long as the Hoover Dam and can be seen from space!

Beavers are calm animals who usually avoid any confrontations with humans. Unfortunately, they sometimes make their way into our neighborhood pond or creek and can create dangerous situations with their busy behavior. While we sleep, beavers feed and build dams. Beavers like to eat the cambium layer which is the circulatory system of the tree. When they chew away the entire lower section of the trunks cambium layer the tree can not send nutrients to the upper part of the tree, killing the tree. A beaver can completely fall a medium size tree in the middle of the night. Out in the wilderness these activities do not pose a threat to humans but when they start to destroy trees in our yard or close to high traffic walk ways it can create a hazardous environment for us. The beavers should be humanely removed and the damaged trees should be cut down.

Wildlife Fun Fact - Opossums usually give birth twice a year. Their litters typically range from 4-8 joeys at a time but can have as many as 20! When opossums are born they are the size of a honey bee and crawl to their mothers pouch. They remain there for several weeks then come out to ride on mom’s back. After about 100 days they will take off on their own.

How many do you see in the first picture? One? That’s what I thought at first. I went to remove some of the debris and realized she had joeys. They all panicked and started to scramble but I was able to safely remove the female opossum and all her joeys.

Wildlife Fun Fact - Rats have a bite pressure of about 7,000 lbs per square inch! They can pretty much chew through any material that is not as hard as their teeth.

This homeowner had been fighting a rodent infestation for a couple of years and could not get the situation under control or figure out why they were there. The home was clean, well built, with a well maintained landscape. They decided to remodel and tear out all the sheetrock. Behind the sheetrock they found a rat maze that allowed rodents to navigate their entire house. Every room had sign that rats had been in the walls nesting. This rodent problem was all because of two small entry points! Why were the rats there? They found shelter.

Home Invasion!? 😬🐍
Wildlife Fun Fact - Snakes are unique in that they shed their skin in a process called ecdysis. Snakes continue to grow but their skin does not, forcing them to shed the outer layer. Snakes can shed their skin once a month but may only happen a couple of times a year. Many factors can affect how often snakes shed, including species, age, weather and temperature, nutritional health, and the presence of bacteria or parasites.

An electrician called me and asked if we handled snakes. Of course we do! 😎🐍 He continued to tell me that his customer had 30 snake skins in the attic and he refused to do the work until I came and inspected the property. I have to be honest, I thought he was exaggerating and was overreacting and I didn’t believe him at first. I got the information from him and headed over. ….WELL I’ll BE DANG! 30 snake skins in the attic and more in the crawl space! 😳

From the size, color, and location of the snake skins I put together that most of these skins came from a non-venomous Western Rat Snake. There were very old sheds and new sheds so not only does this home have a snake issue but a continuous rodent issue as well. The home will be sealed and all snakes and rodents removed!

Home invasion!? πŸ€πŸ˜¬
This is what $10,000 in damages looks like. This home is big and very well kept. The interior was spotless and the lawn is well maintained. So why did rats choose this home? Because there were available entry points that the homeowner did not know about. Once the rats were in the attic they found grass seed which to them is a food source. After a food source was found the rats invited their friends. They then chewed through a waterline which caused $10k in damages. Home insurance does not cover damages from wildlife other than raccoons.

I often hear β€œMy house does not have rats, I keep it clean”. Keeping a clean house and a well maintained yard is just the beginning. If you have holes in your home that you are unaware of and a possible food source, you could end up with an expensive problem on your hands.

Is your home hole free? Any areas rats can enter? Call us for a full home inspection. We start our inspections as soon as we get out of the truck. We check the front and back yards for attractants, then inspect the home in and out from the foundation to the chimney. Mention this post for a free inspection!

Wildlife Fun Fact - Rats carry a number of zoonotic diseases which is why we offer full attic restorations!

This ductwork was installed incorrectly and should have been lifted off of the attic floor. When the ductwork lays over rafters it is in easy reach for rodents to chew through it. The pictures show a VERY hazardous situation where rats have chewed through the ductwork. The warm and cool air blowing through the opening created a comfortable spot, creating more rodent traffic, creating a very large pile of f***s at the opening. Rodents can carry hantavirus which can be transmitted to humans when they inhale airborne particles from rodent droppings, urine, or carcasses that have been disturbed. Every time the A/C or heat turn on in this home it is pulling particles into the home.

Is your ductwork on the floor of your attic? Are you sure you don't have rodents?

It’s getting chilly outside and that means animals are going to start moving in! This raccoon chewed and clawed it’s way to take advantage of the cozy attic. Multiple latrines were found so the attic will have to be cleaned and sanitized.

Wildlife Fun Fact - Nutria are herbivores with a BIG appetite! On average they weigh around 16-18lbs and consume about 25% of their body weight daily. They choose vegetation close to the water banks and eat the entire plant including the root. This creates serious erosion issues and have changed entire ecosystems along the coast.

These nutria were terrorizing a golf course at night. Their deep burrows in the river bank and large appetite were causing erosion issues. Large sections of land were crumbling into the lake and river creating a hazardous environment for golfers. We were able to humanely trap and remove the nutria from the golf course and relieve the greenskeeper of his stress!

Wildlife Fun Fact - Texas rat snakes are non-venomous and kill their prey by constriction.

This Texas rat snake was found during an inspection of a home that had a rodent problem. The home owner had set out traps to catch rats and found this surprise. I was able to safely remove the snake and then solve their rat issue.

If you are having an issue with rats or mice these non-venomous snakes are usually not far behind. The Texas rat snake is also sometimes referred to as a chicken snake because they eat chicken eggs and other nesting bird's eggs. Wildlife Fun Fact - Opossums are immune to almost all venomous species of snakes in their native range, with the exception of the coral snake. Not only are they immune to snake venom but they will likely eat the snake after it bites them. That’s right, venomous snakes are on the opossum’s menu.

Opossums are great to have in our backyards but sometimes they find their way into our attics, under our decks, or in this ones case in a warehouse causing unsanitary conditions. It was humanely removed and released at one of our many partnered landowners properties.

Wildlife Fun Fact - From cows in a pasture, to deer in the woods, or even rats in the attic, most animals tend to be very routine in their travels. They find safe travel routes and use them to find food, water, shelter, and mates.

In this picture we can see where rats have been accessing the main attic space and their travel routes. Rats traveling on top of insulation will probably never be heard by the homeowner. Sneaky rats will usually go undetected until they become well established and begin to walk directly on the ceiling, scratch on walls, or begin to chew on studs.

Dirty Gutters?! πŸ πŸ’¦
How do dirty gutters relate to wildlife? At least once a year gutters should be cleaned to maintain a clear path for water. Excessive build up from leaves, dirt and debris can create a sagging, clogged gutter system that does not work properly. Overflow from these clogged systems can cause erosion around the foundation and give easy access to burrowing animals. Clogged gutters can also redirect water to areas causing water damage, eventually weakening siding and wood trim allowing animals easy access to walls and attics. Once cleaned, we also install foam inserts to protect against future blockage and this makes for easier yearly maintenance.

Need your gutters cleaned?

Chewed wires cause fires!πŸ”₯πŸ”₯
Why do rats chew wires? The answer is simple, because they are there! Wires in your attic usually run across rafters and plumbing which rats use as β€œhighways” in an attic. Rats grind their teeth on objects to manicure them, and conveniently located wires are perfect to chew on. This usually leaves a path of destruction along their routes. Exposed wires can be dangerous.

A THOROUGH INSPECTION IS IMPORTANT!!! The chewed wires were immediately brought to the homeowners attention so they could contact their electrician to repair the damage. We were able to remove the rats, seal the home, and provide a warranty to protect this customer’s home for many years!
