Holy Hikes Great Lakes

Holy Hikes Great Lakes is an outdoor ministry of the Episcopal Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan. All ages welcome.

We come together to pray and hear scripture, all while exploring God's creation across the lower peninsula of Michigan.

We had a wonderful sunny afternoon at Secchia Meadows at Millennium Park!

18/05/2024

Hi there! As you begin to arrive at Secchia Meadows at Millennium Park, head towards the giant RV... It's not ours, but it's a really good landmark right now! Why is there a giant white RV by our Basecamp? Well, because some folks are getting hitched at the pavilion today! We should be out of their way and vice versa, but if you're able, maybe park a little farther out so guests arriving at the wedding at 2 PM can park closer to the blessed festivities.

If you don't remember your sunscreen, we've got the hookup, but it's definitely highly recommended today!

See you soon!

Good afternoon friends! Signs are located at the corner of Sink Rd and Frost Rd, along with at our trailhead! It's a crisp day, but great for hiking! See you soon!

Our last hike of the 2023 season was a wet but joyful one as we gathered at Woodland Park Nature Preserve in Battle Creek.

14/10/2023

Heard some wild turkey out in the woods on the prehike! Really peaceful and lots of birdsong today under gentle, if steady, showers. It's a beautiful day for a hike with good shoes and a jacket!

13/10/2023

As long as we can safely hike and have enough interest in a hike to conduct it, we will.

Tomorrow’s hike is still on, with a modified route to protect more delicate parts of the trail.

Grab your rain gear and we’ll see you at 1 PM at Woodland Park Nature Preserve in Battle Creek! Remember we are gathering at the Gethings Road entrance at the north end of the Preserve!

Walk on!

Due to low registrations, tomorrow's hike at Mill Pond Park in Mount Pleasant has been cancelled and registrants are being contacted by phone.

We invite all of our Holy Hikers across the state to stop for a moment of prayer outdoors tomorrow, praying for fellowship with all Creation:

A Prayer by Walter Rauschenbusch (“For this World” [1910], adapted)

Enlarge within us the sense of fellowship
with all living things, our brothers and sisters the animals to whom you gave this earth as their home in common with us.
We remember with shame that in the pastwe have exercised the high dominion of humans with ruthless cruelty,so that the voice of the Earth, which should have gone up to you in song, has been a groan of travail.
May we realize that they live, not for us alone, but
for themselves and for you,and that they love the sweetness of life even as we, and serve you in their place better than we in ours.
We pray through our Savior Jesus Christ, who lifts up and redeems us all. Amen.

We hope you can join us for the last hike of the season on October 14th at Woodland Park in Battle Creek! Register here: tinyurl.com/HolyHikesGreatLakes2023

It was a gorgeous day in Newaygo, where twenty people (and three dogs!) joined us on the trail at the Newaygo County Welcome Center where we shared our first ever Walking Eucharist (many thanks to the Rev BJ Heyboer for her help and the yummy bread)

Our next hike will be September 23rd, 1 PM, at Mill Pond Park in Mount Pleasant.

Fourteen pilgrims trekked from the shores of Lake Esau to the shores of Lake Huron and back today! What a blessing to travel the many trails of life together!

17/06/2023

Good morning friends! As you travel to Camp Chickagami, know that many GPS devices tell you that you've arrived at Camp before you've actually arrived. Camp Chickagami has a fairly large sign at their main drive, so if you don't see it yet and you are on Kaufman Rd., Keep going til you see the sign on your right! When you arrive, please park as soon as you are able and then head to Fletcher Hall, where our table will be set up.

Can't wait to hike with y'all today!

10/06/2023

One week until we gather on the shores of Lake Esau at Camp Chickagami and walk to Lake Huron to celebrate Joy in Creation. For more information, visit our event page:

What a wonderful afternoon gathering with over 20 people from all over to pray, listen to scripture, and walk together around the southern end of Mott Lake and the Flint River! Thanks Teri Manney for holding down the fort while we walked!

Our next hike is June 17 at Camp Chickagami in Presque Isle! Want to make a weekend of it? Register for Days at the Lake!

22/04/2023

It's a beautiful day on the Flint River, even with the sprinkles. We'll see you all at 1 PM!

21/04/2023

It's looking like tomorrow is going to be a bit rainy, but there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes! We'll have some ponchos on hand for folks who forget their rain gear. The trail we're walking is paved, so mud will be minimal.

We're excited to announce the 2023 Season of Holy Hikes Great Lakes!

In 2023, we'll take on five hikes throughout the lower peninsula, from April through October 2023. Our Holy Hikes are like liturgy on the move -- we will be hiking and praying along the way, hearing scripture and learning about God's creation.

Holy Hikes are open to all - you do not need to be an Episcopalian or a member of a church to join. Bring friends!

There are no age limits to participation, but we do require that any minors (kids under 18) be accompanied by a designated adult.

There is no cost to attend any of the Holy Hikes events, but your RSVP helps us plan and communicate in case of weather.

We couldn't have asked for nicer weather in Port Huron today for our last hike of the season on the Blue Water Riverwalk! Lydia from Friends of the St. Clair River joined us to talk about the incredible environmental restoration work happening on the St. Clair River. What a lovely day!

That's our second full season in the books! Come see us at the third annual Bi-Diocesan Convention (we'll be offering a Prayer Stroll on the Lansing River Walk!). See you on the trail next year!

We're so excited to have Lydia from Friends of the St. Clair River join us Saturday on our walk along the Blue Water Riverwalk to talk about habitat restoration and point out all the awesome critters along the way!

Happy 1-year anniversary, Lydia! As our Environmental Field Technician, they jumped right in to help with the Spongy Moth suppression program, Thumb Coast Storm Drain mural project, and provide expert care for our sturgeon. Lydia oversaw the Sanborn Woods environmental service project to recruit 44 volunteers that removed 6 acres of invasive species and cleared trash from 1 mile of trail. Thanks for all you do, Lydia!
