A lot of people think of massage as a luxury - it's a spa day to relax and drift off while someone gently rubs you. This is true and touch can be beneficial to help us relax and release stress, but massage CAN be more than a luxury nap if you let it. Daily aches and pains take more than one relaxing session a month to unwind, which is why we use routine focused massage to work through problem areas while still maintaining a relaxing feel.

Self care is more than a day in the spa, an expensive gym membership, or that sugary latte. Solid self care is acknowledging your needs and making healthy decisions to provide what you need to be healthy, happy, and pain-free!

Most people when asked "how's your stress level today" reply with "fine or I'm not stressed". Unfortunately, it isn't that we aren't stressed but we've learned to ignore our stress. But just because we don't notice, doesn't mean it's not there. Our constantly stimulating lives and our ever-growing list of responsibilities means there's a lot on our shoulders. 😳 Stress isn't inherently a bad thing, it can actually be quite motivating when effectively managed.

But in order to live healthy, happy lives we need to learn to harness and use our stress rather than allowing it to overcome and drown us. Here's a few things to be aware of that might indicate that your feeling stressed and aren't at your best:
-Shallow breathing
-Headaches
-Stomach pain/nausea
-Lack of interest
-Fatigue/exhaustion
-Emotional sensitivity (feeling hangry or on-edge)
-Tight shoulders and neck

If you find yourself stressed, take a moment to take some deep belly breaths πŸ’¨, move or dance around to release tensionπŸ’ƒ, reach out to a friend πŸ“ž, and remember that you've got this!

21/01/2020

😳 Look at you...prioritizing your health, making mindful decisions, taking charge of your health, and starting this year off strong! Whether you've been perfect thus far is irrelevant, the fact that you are trying means YOU'RE DOING GREAT! Give yourself a pat on the back for your efforts! πŸ‘

Good things take time and your health is one of those good things!!! Think about it- You've had this habit or pattern for YEARS by this point, so take it easy on yourself and remember that it will take time to reprogram. Take it one day at a time and remember that your health and happiness are worth it!

Timeline photos 19/01/2020

It's never too late to become your happiest, healthiest, and pain-free self!

The idea that it's too late to start a new habit or begin the health journey is utter garbage! πŸ—‘οΈ Unless you are already buried in the ground, there's plenty of time to set your sights on a goal and move towards it!

No one is stopping you except the critical voice in your head. 😜

Remember you aren't a "failure" if you aren't perfect! In fact, were not aiming for perfection anyway, were shooting for consistent healthy choices to get us back to feeling and performing our best. Be easy on yourself and aim for consistency!

Let's talk goals! We may all genuinely want to look and feel better but setting that as our goal isn't much better than setting no goal at all!

Setting an attainable goal that we can actually aim for requires a few pieces:
-S(pecific) What do I want to do?
-M(easurable) How am I going to achieve this? What steps do I need to take to get to my goal?
-A(ttainable) Make sure your goal is difficult enough to motivate you but not too difficult where you can't actually achieve it
-R(ealistic) Do you have the time and motivation to work toward this goal right now?
-T(imeline) What's your timeline?

Now let's look at an example! One of my goals this month is to drink 2L of water each day. My SMART goal looks something like this... "This month I will drink 2L of water each day; To achieve this goal I will set reminders, carry my water bottle, and track my progress in my habit tracker." πŸ’§

A couple other reminders:
-Always use strong "I will" statements
-Set a clear and measurable step (like drinking 2L in my example)
-List tools to achieve this goal (reminders, bottle, tracking progress)
-Set a deadline so you don't have the excuse "ill get to it tomorrow" because tomorrow will never come.
-Don't beat yourself up if you don't achieve your goal each day. Get curious about that stopped you and try again tomorrow!
-Review your goals often! Are they still motivating?

Resolutions are often a vague direction we would like to point our life toward, like "this year I want to get healthy" or "go to the gym". They often come with a large commitment and lot of pressure without really giving us any idea of how to get there. A pressurized vague direction without clear steps often leads to us giving up. And giving up on our resolutions, especially year-after-year can leave us feeling hopeless and worthless.

So change your pattern and go against the grain! Set clear goals this year and start this decade differently!

Remember why you started!

It can be easy to give up, especially if we perceive ourselves failing. This is about the time of year when we give up on our goals because we forgot or skipped a day... or two... or twelve...😳😟

But this is the perfect time to take a breath, remember what you're doing this for, and start again. πŸ€— The only true "failure" is not trying again after falling down.

Habits propel you toward your goals!

We'll talk about setting achievable goals this month, but don't discount starting healthy habits. They're game-changing! Honestly, goals are vital to keeping your compass pointed in the right direction, but the habits you build are what actually help you make progress towards that goal each day. Without the habits to get you there, goals turn to "it would be nice" and finally die in the lost goals graveyard each of us has. So yes, set goals, but work toward building habits to support and propel you towards those goals!

"When should I use heat?"

With chronic pain it can be tricky to figure out which tools to use when you are in pain. We recommend using heat when you are feeling pain from tension. This can feel like tight muscles that ache and won't loosen up. Heat can provide that "aah" of relief, just like drinking a warm cup of tea.

Our favorite times to use heat are: in the morning to reduce stiffness before getting out of bed, before workouts to loosen up and prevent injury, and before bed to relax and reduce aches and pains in the middle of the night.

When do you use heat?
