Rainbow trout eggs for Trout in the Classroom! We get 200 eggs from the hatchery. These are eyed up eggs. The black dots are their eyes! The second stage they are called Alevin and will survive off of their yolk sacs. The next stage is called swim-up fry. A female rainbow trout will lay 400-3000 eggs based on her size. Only 1-2% will survive to spawn depending on watershed quality and other factors!

Since it's Valentine's Day... We love Trout in the Classroom! It's the best hands on education for youth to learn about the trout species in our local rivers and to know why keeping the rivers cool, clean, and connected is important. And, Missoula has fabulous watersheds. WSCTU sponsors several schools participating in this program and more want to participate. This is a WIN for the future of conservation. These kids will be voting in a short time and they will be the next stewards of our rivers. Let's make sure the future is in good hands! Thank you to all our donors. We ❤️ you!

Hellgate High School students release rainbow trout into Silver's Lagoon The students helped raise the fish as part of the new Trout in the Classroom program.
Tomorrow is the big day when these beautiful rainbow babies are released to their new home! Thanks to WestSlope Chapter TU for sponsoring TIC and to the teachers and students at Hellgate High for raising them from eggs, to alevin, to fry, to becoming parr. They’re about two inches long and hungry. Did you know female trout lay between 5-7000 eggs and on average only two survive in the wild? Those are not great odds and that’s why conservation is so important. We started with our fertilized hatchery eggs in December with a little over 200 eggs and have had a successful survival rate! TIC, or Trout in the Classroom is a national environmental program started decades ago via Trout Unlimited. Check it out…

The tiny trout are eating now and growning fast! They've been through the stages of eyed eggs, hatching into alevin, and swim up fry. They look larger thean they actually are. Aren't they beautiful? Thanks to our science teachers, Hellgate High School WestSlope Chapter Trout Unlimited

Exciting news! The trout eggs have hatched and are begining to look like little fish with big orange bellies. At this stage they are call Sac Fry or Alevin. They will live off the nutrients stored in the yolk sac protruding from their underbellies. The water must be cold, clean and well-oxygenated. Do you know what temperature the water must be for optimum results?
We’re having babies! It’s been a long time in the making. In December we received our fertilized trout eggs in the ‘eyed ova’ stage. We partnered with Hellgate High School science teachers and students to raise trout eggs in the aquarium sponsored by WestSlope Chapter Trout Unlimited. Trout in the Classroom is a successful program set up by TU to introduce youth to the trout species and what it takes to have clean rivers to support healthy fisheries. Thanks to Stephanie and Jeff from Montana FWP. Thanks to Eric,Patrick and Bill from . Follow along as the eggs hatch!
