Food Cycle KC

Food Cycle KC

The majority of what we throw away can be recycled, reused, or composted. We make that easy.

Curbside composting supporting customers, community gardens and urban farms on the Kansas side of KC.

Just a reminder that this Saturday 9-12 will be our last week at The Merc Co+op in Lawrence. Thank you Lawrence for your amazing support!

Just a little something to keep your mind off the heat!

And a reminder that we'll be at the today, but we'll have shortened hours: 4:30 - 6:30, so come early and drop off your bucket!

22/08/2023

It's toasty, but our drivers are heading your way to pick up those green buckets!

Due to the extreme heat this week, some of our schedules may be running earlier than what you're used to. Please have your buckets out in the morning!

Contamination in compost is something we have to watch out for. Luckily, our members do an amazing job of just collecting food waste, so we typically have almost no contamination!

Sometimes things still slip through though. We have a collection of items that we find when we're screening. Lots of cutlery!

On the right is our latest find. 😀

Any guesses on what our most common contaminant is? (comment and let us know)

Happy 4th of July!

We're enjoying some fresh picked raspberries. YUM!

How are you celebrating today?

How do we spend our Wednesdays?

Working with KC Farm School at Gibbs Road to reduce food waste through composting, and support local agriculture and education!

This is what you help support and create with the food waste you save every week!

Every Wednesday we deliver about 1500 pounds of residential food waste to add to their compost pile. Completing the food cycle where it's needed instead of driving food waste miles away.

Their Farm Apprentices do the heavy lifting and see first hand how to create the compost they'll use to grow all that amazing food.

Rescuing Princess Leia would have been a lot easier if the Empire composted. Just saying....

May the Fourth be with you!

This is awesome! One of our current customers shared that her son won a special ribbon in March at the Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair At Union Station for his study on whether coffee grounds help compost decompose faster.

I love hearing about all the different programs and education that's popping up around composting and soil health, and to see a cool study like this!

What a great event! We’re happy to be a partner in reducing food waste at Johnson County Community College!

It may be chilly, but the compost is going to be hot! Glad to have contributed a trailer full of food waste to help build KC Farm School at Gibbs Road’s new compost pile!

We’re here until 2 and I’ll be talking about backyard composting at 1!

Special events are a great opportunity to reduce organic waste (food + decor) and compost what remains. Love in Lawrence has created a holistic plan for sustainable events and we're happy to be a key part of that vision!

Save The Food 12/04/2023

Welcome to Food Waste Prevention Week!

As much as 40% of food in the United States is wasted each year. Composting is a great way to keep that wasted food out of the landfill, but what can we do to reduce how much food is wasted?

There are a lot of great resources available online that may give you some ideas on things you can do! Here's a great one to start with - Save the Food.

Save The Food 40% of food is wasted. Let's save the food.

Are you a composting champion?

Once you're done cheering for your Championship pick tonight what happens to your (hopefully celebratory) dinner remains?

Pizza and paper...compost (don't just leave them in the box though. They're likely to spill out on your driveway when we pick up your compost if they're not in the bucket)

salt and pepper...compost...or save them to use later!

Pizza box...compost (put the box under your bucket so it doesn't blow away)

Everything else...Use it later, or place in the trash. Leaving the cheese and pepper flakes in the plastic containers means it can't be composted.

Gardening season! Our live plant kits are a great way to get started.

Will it?

You'd be amazed at all the things you can put in your compost bucket. Including paperboard egg cartons (don't forget the egg shells too)!

Unfortunately, Styrofoam doesn't make the list. 😢

Growing Good

Like so many other people we try to do our part for the environment and local businesses. We recycle, buy local, try to minimize our food waste, and compost in our backyard. We volunteer with local community gardens, and started growing some of our own vegetables.

In September 2019, we attended a local Climate Summit and heard Paul Hawken speak about Drawdown and what we can do globally to solve the problem of greenhouse gas emissions. Food waste and the related production of greenhouse gas emissions from food breakdown was the 3 rd highest cause of greenhouse gas emissions. This was a revelation and a wake-up call to do more.

We began Food Cycle KC in October of that same year. Our goal was modest, to reduce the amount of organic waste from Shawnee and Johnson County that would make its way into the landfill, transform that waste into compost and provide it to local community gardens and urban farms. To close the food life cycle in our community.

As we grew that idea and began looking for urban farms to partner with, it became clear that, while there was a rich culture of urban farming growing on the Missouri side of Kansas City, there was not an equivalent movement on the Kansas side.
