The death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of former Memphis police officers is appalling and indefensible.

The brutality suffered by Mr. Nichols and the failure of any of these individuals to intervene is inexcusable. Our thoughts go out to Mr. Nicholsโ€™ family, his friends, colleagues, and the Memphis community.

The individuals involved have rightly been fired and criminally charged in the death of Tyre Nichols. There is no excuse for their actions.

Here at the Grand Junction Police Department, we remain committed to emphasizing dignity and respect for all and instilling within our agency a fundamental commitment to the preservation of human life. We will remain committed to working within our community to build a future that ensures dignity and security for all of our citizens.

Iโ€™m extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Doug Sorter. Doug was a tireless advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community, and his impact through that work, as well as his countless other volunteer efforts, will not be forgotten. Please keep him, his family, and his friends in your thoughts. Our community has lost a great man.

The City of Grand Junction joins cities across the country in lighting City Hall in blue and yellow in solidarity with Ukraine as it deals with a full-on invasion from Russia.

Mayor Pro Tem Anna Stout said it is not just a symbolic gesture but also an important step in representing the values of Grand Junction.

โ€œWe share a goal with our friends and colleagues in Ukraine to live in a peaceful world free from the devastating and deadly consequences that we are seeing unfold in Ukraine,โ€ Stout said. โ€œLighting City Hall in the national colors of Ukraine does not change whatโ€™s happening there, but it does send a message that we stand with Ukraine, and above all, we stand for peace."

Colorado Unify Challenge 04/03/2022

Part of the reason I decided to run for office were questions about how we begin to reel our country back from the divisiveness that has been so prevalent in recent yearsโ€”for me, that has to start at the local level, and so running for local office felt like part of the solution. This project seems like a good way to get constructive conversations started with people who think differently. I'm signed up, and I'd encourage you to sign up as well!

Colorado Unify Challenge Itโ€™s a productive one-on-one online conversation with another Coloradan who may vote or think differently than you do (but is just as colorful!). Listening to a neighbor and hearing a fresh perspective helps everyone get back to the business of solving problems.

Mike Nordine came to the Grand Junction Police Department in 1983, fresh out of what was then Mesa State College, and we've been lucky enough to benefit from his service throughout his entire 38+ year career. During his tenure, he has served in almost every possible role, and has been instrumental in leading our agency. Deputy Chief Nordine has embodied community policing, representing the best of us in partnerships like JUCO, Strive, the Grand Junction Air Show, and coaching youth sports. Today, DC Nordine retired from public service. His presence will be missed in our building, but we will continue to thrive due in no small part to how he has helped make us better. Here's to travel, golf, and time with family, Deputy Chief! No one deserves it more.
