Please help us locate Sarah Vivian Lukehart, 17 years old, last seen around 6:00 AM this morning at her home in the 100 block of Roy St. Sarah is enrolled in Project Lifesaver, a program designed to assist in locating at-risk individuals who may wander. She is possibly wearing a dark tie-dye shirt, red shorts, and barefoot.

Our officers and detectives are actively searching for Sarah. If you have any information on her whereabouts, please contact 911 immediately.

Special Notice: The City of Canton is starting a paving project beginning Mon., July 29, 2024 on the following streets: Elmwood, Dogwood, Alpine, Ivy, Birch, Center, Cross, and Highland.

There will be no street parking Mon.-Fri., from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., until the project is complete. Overflow parking will be at the Canton Dog Park on Juniper Street.

Congratulations, Deputy Chief!

The City of Canton Police Department proudly announces the promotion of Captain Jeff Tucker to the position of Deputy Chief. With over three decades of dedicated law enforcement experience, Captain Tucker has exemplified outstanding leadership and commitment to public service.

Captain Tucker's career in law enforcement began in 1986 in Michigan before joining the Canton Police Department in 2003. Throughout his tenure, he has served with distinction in various capacities, including Traffic Officer, Traffic Corporal, Traffic Sergeant, and Uniform Patrol Lieutenant. In 2018, he was promoted to the rank of Captain, where he has effectively overseen departmental operations and initiatives. In his role as Administrative Bureau Commander since 2022, Captain Tucker has been responsible for overseeing fleet management, emergency operations, administration and records bureau, code enforcement, parking enforcement, property evidence management, and accreditation, among other duties. He has also spearheaded innovative programs such as the Electric Motorcycles Program and License Plate Recognition Systems, contributing to improved departmental efficiency and effectiveness.

Chief Marty Ferrell remarks, "Captain Tucker's promotion to Deputy Chief is a testament to his unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership within our department. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation and excellence, and I have full confidence in his ability to continue serving our community with integrity and professionalism."

A reminder that today 10/4 from 2:20pm to 2:50pm EST, there will be a nation-wide test of the emergency alert system . the emergency test message will broadcast to all wireless devices which are powered on, not set to "airplane mode", and able to receive alerts. This alert will not interrupt on-going phone calls on cell phones during the test period, but the alert will resume if a phone call ends during the scheduled alert time. City Launches Veterans Program: Banners for the Brave! The City of Canton wants to honor and remember those who bravely served our country! Banners for the Brave is a new program that will give recognition to Veterans to thank them for or remember their service.

Veterans in the program will be featured on sponsored custom banners with their photo, name, branch of service, and rank and/or war served. Retired or honorably discharged members of the United States Armed Forces who reside in the City of Canton, or resided in the City of Canton and are now deceased, are eligible for the program. Banners will be installed and on display one month prior to Veterans day, approx. Oct. 9 - Nov. 13, 2023.

Canton PD is now accepting applications for the fall session of the Citizen's Police Academy. I am a 2019 graduate of the academy, and can honestly say signing up was the best decision my wife ever made on my behalf before telling me. 😁
It is an opportunity to understand what our officers experience on a daily basis, the various trainings they receive, and what sets them apart from others in our state.

We would love for you to attend our Citizen's Police Academy. This is a great chance for you to learn about law enforcement and get behind the scene look at our department.

The Academy will start on Thursday, September 14, 2023, and will run through November 9, 2023. All Classes will be held on Thursday from 6-8 PM except for gun range day, and your ride-along (see schedule below).

"The Citizen's Police Academy is one of the most valuable programs we offer in our community outreach efforts. It gives our citizens the opportunity to learn how their police department functions and why certain tactics and investigatory strategies are employed. We look forward to sharing information and forging a partnership with the community members who participate in this exciting program." Police Chief Stephen Merrifield.

Session 3: Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad (CMANS) – Get an insider’s look at narcotics Investigations. A member of CMANS explains the unique aspects of undercover work – use of informants, warrants, repeat arrest statistics, ‘designer drugs’ and what citizens need to know to aid in combating drugs in our city.

Session 7: Use of Force, Taser, and Introduction to Fi****ms – Receive basic instruction of suspect and prisoner control – what can and cannot be done, the types of restraints available to Officers, and standard internal investigations in each of these cases. Various devices will be displayed and demonstrated.

Session 8: Gun Range (Location and time will be announced)– This is possibly the most exciting course for academy students and officers. We offer live weapons demonstrations, group instruction, and a personal chance to use our weapons.

Session 9: Graduation Awards Dinner and Community Relations – Understand the critical role of community policing and the future of our Canton Police Department. Hear closing remarks from Chief Merrifield and be presented with graduation certificates.

Work is underway on North St. In Downtown Canton to install a new sanitation enclosure and grease trap to service the restaurants and businesses there. To safely work on this project, the left lane of traffic, spanning from the corner of Dupree St. and North St. to the crosswalk at Cannon Park, has been closed to pedestrians and vehicles. Time estimated to completion is six weeks, weather permitting. Funding for this project has been provided by the City of Canton Downtown Development Authority.

The City of Canton Municipal Court has elected to hold an Amnesty Month from Jan. 1, 2023 to Jan. 31, 2023, at 5 p.m.

"This is an opportunity for individuals to clear up a municipal record and start the new year with a clean slate,” said Judge Thomas Roach, Jr. “The last few years have left a lot of people in very difficult financial straits, as the pandemic and the economy have taken a toll on us all. Unfortunately, incurring a fine because of a criminal citation makes matters worse.
