Being first time farmers comes with its share of trials and tribulations. Thereโs so much to know, so much to learn. Itโs a never ending cycle of ups and downs. One of the hardest, yet rewarding things, are the bonds that are made with some animals. We all have our favorite cow just like a favorite dog or cat. This can be a very rewarding experience but it can also be a very hard one when loss occurs. (One day Iโll share the story of my Ruby.)
Our beloved cow Grace became immobilized this past Saturday. My family and I were actually in Columbus at Ohio State for a beef class when we received the news. Levi (the person, not our dog) and several more of our amazing friends jumped right into action and went to Grace. She was laying in the pasture on her side unable to stand. They used the skid loader to safely move her to the barn where she was propped up on straw for support and warmth. The vet came out later that afternoon and gave her an IV and some meds. We arrived home later that night and went straight to the barn to see her. Of course in true Grace fashion, her eyes opened and her ears perked up when she heard our voices. She still wasnโt able to lift her head. And one of the sweetest sights was that Levi (our often scary Aussie) was right by her side. Emily was with her as well, loving on her and hand feeding her hay. She could move three of her four legs like she was running in air but couldnโt lift her head. Sunday morning she actually made what appeared to be a snow cow by moving her feet and head while laying down, unable to stand.
To us, Grace isnโt just a cow. Sheโs part of our story. Grace is Jakeโs very first heifer who is now considered a cow. She gave us three heifer calves; Hope, Faith and most recently Love. Gramma Grace wanted Jake to be able to start his own herd so she bought Grace for him the summer we purchased the farm. Hence the name Grace:). We love Grace. When we think about her, we think about her sweet demeanor, her fluffy ears, and the fact that she loves licking shoes! Anytime you would go to the gate or get in with her, she always went straight to licking your shoes.
Things were not looking good but Jake was not ready to give up on her. He called OSUโs Veterinary Medical Center first thing Sunday morning and explained her condition and they told him to load her up and bring her to Columbus. It took over an hour to get her turned and carefully loaded into the trailer. What a stressful situation that was. Scott used the skid loader forks to lift her and one of us had to hold the rope to keep her head off the ground. Thankfully Jake and Levi (the person) were strong enough to maneuver her to the back of the trailer without hurting her in the process. Jack, Emily and I just did a lot of pushing to get her in far enough to close the door.
They made it safety back to Columbus and Grace was unloaded into OSUโs care. The vet explained to Jake that what Grace is experiencing is a very rare thing, something they never see. The vet described it as a perfect storm, โan unusual combination of events or things that produce an unusually bad or powerful result.โ The vet said this is not something we should be concerned with the rest of our herd getting and thereโs nothing we should do differently. Just an unfortunate series of events. Grace has a 50/50 chance of making it. Yesterday she was able to lift her head more but nothing else positive yet. This is why Iโm asking for prayers. We know the power of prayer and there is nothing else I can think of that could possibly save Grace except the prayers of our friends and family. We know weโre not supposed to become attached to โthemโ, we know weโre not supposed to โname themโ. Yada, yada, yada. These cows are the powerhouses of what we do. They provide for us and we will provide and care for them.

๐ฟ๐ช๐ฑ๐ธ is a big, powerful word and a word that is thrown around often. Sometimes itโs used to describe something we ๐ป๐ฎ๐ช๐ต๐ต๐ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ด๐ฎ and mostly itโs used to describe ๐ฑ๐ธ๐ ๐๐ฎ ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ต about someone.
๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ is the month of ๐๐๐๐ผ and today is the day we celebrate the people we ๐๐๐๐ผ! When we think about the people we ๐๐๐๐ผ we think about our ๐ท๐พ๐ผ๐ด. ๐ท๐พ๐ผ๐ด is the place where stories are written and dreams are made. ๐๐๐๐ผ is the reason we do what we do and ๐๐๐๐ผ is the glue that holds it all together. ๐ป๐๐๐๐ + ๐๐๐๐ผ = ๐ท๐พ๐ผ๐ด
Itโs only fitting that ๐ท๐พ๐ผ๐ด๐
mean ๐๐๐๐ผ to me. I always heard the saying, โWhen you ๐๐๐๐ผ what you do, youโll never have to work a day in your life.โ That couldnโt be truer for me. Helping people buy and sell ๐ท๐พ๐ผ๐ด๐
over the last twenty years has brought me so much สฯแง and I can honestly say that I ๐๐๐๐ผ what I do. I ๐๐๐๐ผ the people this career has brought into my life and Iโm forever grateful for the opportunities I have been given. May you have ๐๐๐๐ผ, may you feel ๐๐๐๐ผ and may you always show ๐๐๐๐ผ. ๐ป๐ถ๐

Whatโs in a name? We all have our special stories, Iโll share mine about this birthday girl right here. She has been a wonderful addition to the farm!
From the moment I found out I was first pregnant, nearly 25 years ago, I wanted a girl so badly. I dreamed of what it would be like, and how I would dress her and braid her hair. Her name was going to be Emma if she were a girl and if he happened to be a boy (which it wasnโt going to be) then his name would be Jacob. Emma/Emily and Jacob were the number one baby names year after year so I definitely wasnโt original.
My Great-Grandma Fulmer was named Emma and I so loved that name and dreamed of honoring her. Welp, you know how that turned outโฆ. I had Jacob Scott.
When I found out I was having another baby seven years later it was all on again. I looked over every page of the Pottery Barn catalog from front to back for the first 20 weeks dreaming of a beautiful nursery for a girl. This baby was going to be Emma Kate if she was a girl and Jack Michael if he was a boy. Surprise! I have Jake and Jack.
Even though Iโve loved being a boy Mom and itโs probably been a lot easier, I never gave up on having an Emma or Emily someday, I just kept that thought firmly tucked in my back pocket.
Fast forward to what I love almost as much as my kids. You guessed it; cattle. Naming them has always been one of my favorite things to do. Numbered ear tags just arenโt as cute as having names. Most of the time their names are either similar to their mommas, rhyme with it or just go together in a funny way! Ellieโs calves always end in โllieโ. Kallie was her first and then I got my Emmallie. Finally I had the name Iโd wanted for so long although the storyโs not over yet.
Sometime in early โ22, Jake brought over a cute, cute blonde with the sweetest dimples youโd ever seen, her name was Emily! Yes!!! I took it as a sign from God that she was the girl Iโd been waiting for and dreaming of my whole life. Now, Iโm not going to lie. I was kinda mean to her at first but it wasnโt my fault. (Itโs a funny story but I wonโt share it here.) Jake had told me NOT to be friends with any girl be brought over because I quote, โruined his relationships.โ Up until that point I didnโt really think that was true and then I realized I was actually kinda proud of the fact he thought I did that. I was OK with the ones I had โranโ off. I knew they were not the ones for him. Some were tougher to get rid of than others, thankfully the Lord works in mysterious ways. (Just know I was only playful/mean to her a couple times and then I decided I could like her.)
This Emily right here, my Emily, is absolutely amazing! Sheโs sweet, pretty, kind, very caring and thoughtful and handles Jake very well. She takes very good care of him and their home and I know sheโll be an excellent wife and mother some day. Jake can be a handful at times and she knows exactly how to give him that look and maybe a little head tilt and heโs puddy in her hands.
I could not adore her more! Sheโs the daughter I always wanted! She and Jake were engaged in April so maybe, just maybe, sheโll be my actual daughter in law next year! Hereโs to hoping!
Today is her Birthday! I wanted to share this story with you so youโd understand my love for her and what a blessing she is to me.
Happy 23rd Birthday Emily! I love you bunches and bunches! May all your hopes and dreams come true!
I donโt mind getting dirty, I donโt mind a little crap on my good shoes or hay in my hair. I canโt do everything a man can do but Iโll give it a try for at least a little bit:).
Thereโs a lot of women I know who can do it all; they drive the tractors, plant the crops, bale the hay and feed the cows. Theyโre my heroโs on ๐๐ท๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ป๐ท๐ช๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ธ๐ท๐ช๐ต ๐ฆ๐ธ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ท'๐ผ ๐๐ช๐.
The women who donโt quit, wonโt quit and refuse to take crap off anyone. Those are the ones I want to be like and those are the ones Iโm rooting for.
Itโs not the hat that makes me a ๐๐๐ง๐ข๐๐๐ง. I wear all kinds of hats. Itโs my determination, stubbornness, attitude and my love for this life that keeps me pushing on. Itโs having faith that God placed me right where I was meant to be, itโs up to me to keep fighting for what I want. โค๏ธKatie
