Children of less-educated parents are much more likely to become low-skilled adults. Literacy practice at a young age is crucial!

(Image description: The picture on the right is of a child reading. They have a green beanie on and a yellow shirt with their face in their hands. The text reads: U.S. adults with low levels of education who have parents with low levels of education are 10 times more likely to have low skills than are those who have higher-educated parents.)

Check out this literacy definition by the National Literacy Directory. Often, our new incoming volunteer tutors have said that they never thought about somebody not being able to read a medicine bottle!

The Corvallis and Albany libraries both have study spaces to reserve! You can meet a literacy tutor here, find resources all around you, and have librarians around if you have any other questions.

We keep getting people set up with tutors! Right now, we are making sure the availabilities match up between the last student, and then we'll be waiting on that 10th student so we can hit double digits!

(Image description: Background is green with a lighter green circle on the top. On the bottom are three people sitting at a table in the library. One is standing and bent over at the laptop, the other two are sitting and looking at it with books in front of them. We have shared Monica's story about tutoring, now hear what her tutee has to say about how great of a tutor Monica is!

(Image description: The background is brown. There are blue flowers on both the top and bottom on opposite sides. The text reads:

What does your tutor do to make you look forward to your next session?

"She searches for new material which she feels is suitable for my needs. Sometimes it is material
about writing, reading, or understanding. However, all that material is focused on my growth.
She also feels free to ask me if there is any material I would like to address or see in my next
session." A, Monica's tutee)

The Bow Valley College ESL Literacy Readers are great beginner stories to practice literary skills! You can print them out, or read them from the computer. Take your literacy practice with you on the go, even without internet access.

(Image description: The background has blue on the top and bottom. The image is a screenshot of the Bow Valley College page for their ESL Literacy Readers. Some text says Filter: All, Level A, Level B, Level C, Level D, Level E, Level F, Level G. Below it are three books; Lien Buys Food and has a grocery bag, Inge Cuts Hair and a person is cutting a child's hair, and Mo Stays Warm and a person is on the cover wearing a hat, scarf and jacket)

IXL is a great website with a wide array of class subjects to learn! Based on someone's literacy levels, you can select the grade that has the equivalent work and do practice work. It's free to do 10 problems a day, which can be done quickly, and it makes it easy to just sneak in some practice daily.

(Image description: The background is a screenshot of the website IXL.com. There is a banner with different images: a person in a flying craft, tents, buildings, a hot-air balloon, someone riding a bicycle, a child with balloons, a child on a laptop, a boat in the water, clouds, a kite, and the sun.)

Here's another literacy fact for you! Just another important reason why we work so hard to help improve folk's literacy levels.

(Image description: The background is someone sitting at a black desk. The desk has a keyboard that has a wood pattern and an open notebook with a pen on top. The person is counting 20 dollar bills in their hands. The text says: Improving adult literacy would have enormous economic benefits. Bringing all adults to the equivalent of a sixth grade reading level would generate an additional $2.2 trillion - or 10% of GDP - in annual income for the country.)

The time change is upon us today! Luckily, this is the day when we get an extra hour at least. If you didn't use the extra hour today for reading, what did you use it for?

(Image description: Background is taupe. There is a white clock that has the time 6:50 on it. The text says: Don't forget the time change! What book will you read with your extra hour?)

Happy Halloween! Nobody likes to do work normally on holidays, but if you happen to be practicing any literacy skills today or need a story, check out AmericanLiterature.com! They have a great collection of some festive stories to practice from, that change on the holidays!

Here's a literacy fact for you. Why do you think this is?

(Image description: Text over a building in the bottom right corner.
The text reads: It is estimated between $106-$238 billion in health care costs a year are linked to low adult literacy skills. Adults with limited health literacy are hospitalized and use emergency services at significant higher rates than those with higher skills.)

We wanted to give our volunteers a shout out!

Volunteers give so much. They dedicate their time for free to help others. When people need help in the community, volunteers are there, whether it comes in the form of helping providing food, supplies, shelter, and more.

For us, our volunteers help keep our program running. We wouldn't be able to provide free literacy support for those who need it if we didn't have volunteer tutors. We wouldn't have people making the calls and getting people trained without them.

So, from us to you... THANK YOU for what you do!

(Image description: THANK YOU to all our volunteers. You are what keeps us going and helps us with our community.)

Here's a bit more from Monica's tutee! We are so grateful for the work Monica has done for her tutee.

(Image description: Background is brown. There are red flowers in the bottom right corner and a red dotted line under the center text on the top. The text reads:

How do you feel about your progress since starting with your tutor?

"I have seen an advance in my progress because now I can read and understand English better
than before. In the area of writing, I'm still not very good but we are working together on that.
She has a lot of patience and is always aware of what I need. I feel very comfortable with her and
I really appreciate the time she spends with me to improve my academic skills." A, Monica's tutee)
