Jayatirtha: The people in general they say that we are inhuman because we send our children at five to Gurukula. But they do not think that they are killing their own children before they have a chance to be born.

Prabhupada: Yes, therefore we say there is no first-class men to guide. They are killing child within the womb. They are not given chance to come out and see the light. And we are putting children at five, so we are criminal. They are denying the right of birth. So these things are happening because there is no first-class brain.

Srila Prabhupada's divine purport

"While we live in the gross body, such activities of sense gratification are encouraged even by modern government regulations. In every state all over the world, such activities are encouraged by the government in the form of birth control. Women are supplied pills, and they are allowed to go to a clinical laboratory to get assistance for abortions. This is going on as a result of sense gratification. Actually s*x life is meant for begetting a good child, but because people have no control over the senses and there is no institution to train them to control the senses, the poor fellows fall victim to the criminal offenses of sense gratification, and they are punished after death as described in these pages of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam."

Prabhupada: Yes. Sense gratification is animal civilization. And sense control is human civ...Sense gratification is not human civilization. That they do not know. Their central point is sense gratification. That is the defect. They are running on an animal civilization as human civilization. That is the defect. Sense gratification is animal civilization. And actually they are animals. If they can kill their own child, it is animal. Just like cats, dogs, they kill their own child. What is that? It is animal civilization.

Following Srila Prabhupada

Being a follower of Srila Prabhupada also means that we possess a requisite amount of humility. We see that without his help, we were struggling in vain to find peace and inner happiness. This being the case, we do not believe ourselves to be in any position to add or detract from his pristine example and teachings. Rather, we see that it is our rightful place to simply follow his directions and trust him, knowing that their efficacy can deliver countless living entities from that same struggle for love we once endured.

Prabhupada: that they do not know, when the soul enters. The soul enters in the first night when pregnancy begins. Otherwise how will it grow? Life begins from that point. It grows one day, two day, three day, five day, one month, three months like that. But the growing, growth, begins from that very point. If the life has got shelter between the two secretions of father and mother, then it grows.

In the core of our hearts, we know that every action taken by him and every word spoken by him was motivated by nothing more than that same deep level of affection and sympathy for all living entities. We therefore trust him wholeheartedly because we see how he has so profoundly changed our lives for the better, so in turn his mood of love becomes our mood.

To be a sincere student of Srila Prabhupada means to take on his mood. Why is that? Because we see how his utmost love and compassion has delivered us - and so many others - from the mire of selfishness and self-absorption that characterizes the world around us, we feel grateful and indebted. We thus take on that same mood of love and compassion which Srila Prabhupada consistently displayed throughout his life.

Prabhupāda: Where is civilization? (laughter) The mother is killing child—is that civilization? Where is civilization? Less than doggish civilization. Dog also do not do that. Prabhupāda: Everyone. Mother's affection is natural. Now the civilized mother is killing child. This is your civilization. This is your religion, this is your science, philosophy—everything. And for this, you have created so many big, big buildings to create some less than animals. Civilization is finished unless you take to Kṛṣṇa conscious. Now dictatorship is coming, politics. The dictator can arrest anyone without any trial and stop him. Even their own circle, the Communists... Nobody knows where is Kruschev. Indira Gandhi is doing.

Jayatīrtha: She wants to know about the women's liberation. What is our feeling about women's liberation?
Prabhupāda: That I don't want to discuss because... [laughs] [laughter] They... As you have asked, I may explain that how foolish women are being cheated by the intelligent man. You see?
Woman devotee: Śrīla Prabhupāda is liberating everybody who chants Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Prabhupāda: They have given... In your country, they have given you liberty. Liberty means equal rights, is it not? Man and woman has got equal rights.
Sandy Nixon: They're trying in this country.
Prabhupāda: All right, trying. But you women, you cannot see that this so-called equal right means cheating the woman. Now I say more clearly that a woman and man meets. Now they become lover. Then they have s*x, and the woman becomes pregnant, and the man goes away. The simple woman, she has to take charge of the child and beg from government alms, "Please give me money." This is your independence. Do you admit this is independence, that the man makes the woman pregnant and he goes away without any responsibility, and the woman cannot give up the child; she maintains, begging from the government or she tries to kill the child? Do you think it is very good independence? What is your answer?
Anne Jackson: To... Whether or not it is good to kill a child? Is that the question?
Prabhupāda: Yes, they are killing now, abortion.
Ravīndra-svarūpa: He wants to know that kind of independence.
Anne Jackson: For the child?
Ravīndra-svarūpa: For the woman.
Prabhupāda: For the woman.
Ravīndra-svarūpa: This is liberation. She has an affair with a man, and she gets pregnant. The man leaves. Then she has to beg alms from the government to support the child...
Prabhupāda: Or kill.
Ravīndra-svarūpa: Or she kills the child. So is that good or bad?
Anne Jackson: Well, she has made the choice to have...
Prabhupāda: That means, that is thirty-four ounce. You have made your choice to kill your own child. Is that very good choice?
Sandy Nixon: It's the worst crime you could commit.
Jayatīrtha: Her brain is getting larger. [laughter]
Prabhupāda: Do you think it is very good business? Huh?
Anne Jackson: I think this is a very complicated question.
Prabhupāda: Therefore I say they are cheating you in the name of independence. That you do not understand. Therefore thirty-four ounce. They are cheating you, and you are thinking you are independent.

In this verse the word bala-hatya-hata-prabhah is to be particularly noted. The practice of killing children has existed in human society for a long time–since time immemorial–but in the days of yore it was very rarely performed. At the present moment, however, in this age of Kali, abortion–killing of the child within the womb–has become very common, and sometimes a child is even killed after birth. If a woman performs such an abominable act, she gradually loses all her bodily luster (bala-hatya-hata-prabhah). It is also to be noted that the ladies who had committed the sinful act of administering poison to the child were very much ashamed, and according to the directions of the brahmanas, they had to undergo atonement for killing the child. Any woman who has ever performed such an infamously sinful act must atone for it, but no one now is doing that. Under the circumstances, the women responsible must suffer in this life and the next. Those who are sincere souls, after hearing this incident, should refrain from such child-killing and should atone for their sinful activities by taking to Krsna consciousness very seriously. If one chants the Hare Krsna maha-mantra without offenses, all of one’s sinful actions are surely atoned for immediately, but one should not commit such deeds again, for that is an offense.
