💡Did you know? There are many common barriers that stand between an unsheltered person and the ability to save money, apply for jobs and/or get accepted for housing. It is very rarely easy for someone experiencing homelessness to find reliable employment quickly. 💰Here are a few common barriers to employment:
1. Most companies require you to have a permanent address to obtain employment. No proof of residency makes an unsheltered candidate for employment appear less stable than someone who has a permanent address.
2. First impressions matter. Not having the appropriate attire for the job in which they are applying means potential employers can doubt the ability to meet dress code requirements.
3. When you're hungry and focusing on where you will find your next meal, it's hard to focus on accessing services or looking for employment.
4. Unreliable hygiene makes it difficult to search for, feel confident about, and land employment. Imagine not knowing when you could take a shower next... when you could wash one of just a few sets of clothes... brush your teeth.
5. Medical issues.... Whether a lifelong battle or something that developed as a result of living unsheltered, medical problems, both mental and physical, can be a real barrier to gainful employment.

Houston is reducing homelessness. What can we learn from them? https://loom.ly/c-l6Gb4
How Houston is successfully reducing homelessness In 2012, the nation's fourth-largest city went all-in on a new system to address homelessness in which dozens of agencies join forces under a single umbrella...
An injury or illness can start out as a health condition, but quickly lead to an employment problem due to missing too much time from work; exhausting sick leave; and/or not being able to maintain a regular schedule or perform work functions. This is especially true for physically demanding jobs such as construction, manufacturing, and other labor-intensive industries.
The loss of employment due to poor health then becomes a vicious cycle: without funds to pay for health care (treatment, medications, surgery, etc.), one cannot heal to work again, and if one remains ill, it is difficult to regain employment. Without income from work, an injury or illness quickly becomes a housing problem. (National Health Care for the Homeless Council - https://loom.ly/KgjkXa4)
