It’s been 6 months since I got top surgery!

I love being trans! I love myself for doing hard things in the pursuit of being me! It is so worth it! Get top surgery if you want top surgery!
I love my chest, I love putting on clothes, and taking my shirt off still makes me smile every time

What are CARs?

CARs stands for controlled articular rotations and in the FRC system the daily mobility routine consists of taking your main joints through their CARs.
CARs take each of those joints through their full range of motion in a deliberate path with controlled speed

Doing CARs daily has many benefits, including maintaining range of motion, and providing necessary nutrients to our joints

Today I’m 6 weeks post top surgery!

The healing process hasn’t been linear and is definitely not over but I get to look at the chest that is now mine forever and I struggle to put into words how free this makes me feel

Every time I put on a top I haven’t worn this year yet, it’s a new wave of relief. I feel good in tighter shirts (shirts not pictured lol) and getting dressed is infinitely easier. I am so grateful to have had access to this surgery, and to have the continued privilege of learning to love the body that carries me through my days

I deserve this joy and so do trans people everywhere

1- August shirtless sitting on a log over a river filled with cool rocks
2- August shirtless in the snow with trees in the background
3- August shirtless in Jeep reflection, with a towel over one shoulder

Just finished up Onramp to Inclusive Fitness Practices course!

Super stoked on everything that I learned in this course and the ways it helped me to brainstorm continuing to curate my training business to provide the services and supportive space that I want to provide as a fitness trainer

The Body Positive Fitness Alliance has an eight pillar value system that aligns with who I want to be as a trainer
Their pillars are as follows
1. Accessibility
2. Approachability
3. Community
4. Enjoyment
5. Full health
6. Scope of Practice
7. Body Positivity
8. Growth

The way that defines each of these pillars really resonates with me, and this on-ramp course has helped me think about how to incorporate these values as I continue growing my training business this year

After I finish my recovery over the next month, I’ll be relaunching AXM Moves with these pillars in mind to help me expand my reach in helping people find movement that they feel good about consistently incorporating into their lives.
Everyone deserves support in moving their bodies and working to keep as much mobility as they can, for as long as they can!

Shoutout to little August and all the versions of me in between that got me to where I’m at now

Beyond stoked for top surgery tomorrow and a future of existing in my body as freely as I did as a child

Gender affirming care is so important and necessary and I’m so grateful to have access to an incredible surgeon right here in San Francisco

This year I remembered that audiobooks still count as reading, and that gave me the space to consume so many more books! These are the nine books I learned the most from this year

Shoutout to the Libby & hoopla apps and the that’s how I listened to almost all of these

The Will to Change by bell hooks was a wonderful look into masculinity that helped me gain a deeper understanding of how patriarical culture prevents men from being able to fully give and receive love

Teaching to Transgress by bell hooks helped to inspire the way that I want to interact with clients as a coach, and reminded me how grateful I am for teachers in my past who have believed in me and helped me grow. It helped remind me how freeing education can be when it’s done right.

Amateur by lead me through his process of competing professionally in a boxing match, and was an insightful look at masculinity and fitness spaces. It’s so well written in almost makes getting punched in the face sound like a good time

‘You just need to lose weight’ and 19 Other Myths by Aubrey Gordon is an important read for helping to break down the flaws in pervasive anti-fat myths

The Body is Not an Apology by is a book I would recommend to anyone and everyone looking to re-establish their relationship to their body. Radical self love is life changing

White Fragility by Robin Diangelo is a book that all white people should read to gain a greater understanding of all of the ways we uphold racist systems by avoiding talking about and addressing racism, especially with those close to us

What We Don’t Talk about When We Talk about Fat by was her book prior to the one listed above. In this book she addresses cultural attitudes and social systems that have led to anti-fat bias that causes major discrimination in this country

Heavy by is a memoir that took me through a lot of feelings, and I’m grateful for his raw honesty in this book

How to Be an Anti-Racist by is a great book to read to gain an understsnding of why not being racist isn’t enough, and why we instead need to actively be anti-racist

PERMANENT CEASEFIRE NOW 🇵🇸🍉

It’s easy to feel powerless in a world that is so heavy, but each of us has a voice we can make a difference with. Take action in the streets if you can and if/when you can't, make your voice heard online and in the offices of your elected representatives. If you have an iPhone you can screenshot from instagram and click links in posts directly from your camera roll, that’s an easy way to check out resources that people are posting! The resources available make contacting reps easier than it seems, they’ll write the email for you, they will give you a script to follow on a call.

It’s not too late to start taking action, even if you haven’t spoken up previously. Contact your representatives, talk to your friends and family. Participate in strikes, walkouts and boycotts. Show up for the people of Palestine, who are actively asking for our help to keep attention on the genocide being committed against them.

Three years on T this weekend 🤩
So stoked to get to be my full self and to have so many people who have supported me on this journey to being August.
I wish I could tell the little dude on the starting line in the last picture that eventually everything would make a little more sense and even if it’s not always easy, life will be filled with a lot of love

All over the internet you can find people talking about mobility and functional mobility and it can get confusing what that means. The distinction between flexibility and functional mobility is having strength and control through the range of motion that you are flexible in.

This type of training works to increase our range of motion through each joint and also strengthen our body in those extended range of motion.

Functional Mobility is the ability to actively achieve a range of motion, so you take acquired flexibility & add strength and the ability to control your body throughout that available range of motion.

At the beginning of October I got certified as a FRC® Mobility Specialist. This specialization helps me to optimize training with clients in order to improve body control, safe-guard joints to help mitigate injury, and maximize movement potential safely, efficiently, and effectively. Everyone has different goals, functional mobility training applies to essentially all of them. It’s extremely beginner friendly because the exercises are extremely adaptable to each persons ability and goals, and don’t use any equipment

Beyond excited to announce that after this weekends seminar and passing the post seminar test, I am now a Function Range Conditioning mobility specialist!

Once I found this training system, I thought that it might be the piece I was missing to be able to train clients to have the best experience they can in their bodies, which is my overall goal as a trainer. This weekend confirmed that for me, I am so excited to share this with my clients moving forward.

FRC is a system of joint health optimization based on scientific principals and research, and has helped me to fill gaps and have a guiding system to train clients to have true functional mobility which is actively achieving range of motion which shows strength and control in addition to flexibility.

If your goal is to mitigate injury, improve controlled range of motion through your joints, and build strength specific to anything physical you love to do, send me a dm so we can talk more about how FRC training can help you reach your goals and feel better moving your body

A kind review from an online client!

I’ve been working with Katelyn online since the beginning of March, we work around her busy schedule, building up strength and balance to keep up with her active outdoor lifestyle 🌄

“August is the best!! He’s the perfect mix of motivational when you need a little encouragement and understanding when you just can’t get the workout done that day. He took my too-specific fitness goals and turned them into a fun workout program that I don’t dread every day!”

Thanks Katelyn 🤩🤩

Thankful Thursday with another kind review, this time from an online client!

Thanks Page 🤩😄

Full review-

“I’ve been training online with August for about two months now and it has truly been a wonderful experience. They make a point to help me work around my unpredictable work schedule. August has built my workout program around my specific needs and is always ready and willing to adjust my routine as I get stronger or want to work on something more specific. Being an online client I’m able to send pictures and videos of myself to him and he is always there to correct and motivate me even while living in different cities. August is so kind with their motivation and strays away from toxic diet culture in a way I really appreciate. I would recommend them to anyone!”

A kind review from a hybrid client in San Francisco!!

Thanks Sophie 🤩

Full review-

“August is a thoughtful, goal-oriented personal trainer whose "joyful movement" approach to exercise is inviting and motivating. After negative experiences at big commercial gyms, I was looking for a supportive, body-neutral trainer who could invest time and energy into a workout plan that supports my lifestyle and movement goals. If you're in the SF area, I highly recommend checking them out!”

A kind review from an In-Person Client I have been working with for almost 15 months now! Maddy has gained so much strength and body control, it’s been great watching her build confidence over our time working together!

Full Review below -

“August is an incredible trainer, and overall human. If you're looking for a supportive, kind, and dedicated trainer, I couldn't recommend AXM Moves more. When I first met with August, I had been in a fitness lull because of the pandemic and working remotely. I wasn't moving my body as often. August tailored our sessions with a gradual build on to help me build confidence in my body and my strength. We started with once a week sessions focused on just getting moving -- now we've been working together for almost a year and we meet twice a week with a full custom workout plan that August designed specific to my body and my fitness goals (leading up my wedding). I feel much more confident and strong. August has a uniquely understanding and encouraging approach that I'm super grateful for.”
