There isn't anymore Scot-Tussin. Don't know why this appears on my page. It has nothing to do with me.
SAYING GOODBYE FOR NOW
I'm wrapping up this page and I'd like to thank those of you who liked my page. I hope I've been some help with those of you with Type 2 diabetes like me. It seems like I never know everything and fortunately there are always new things coming
out to help us with it., however as I've always said your best friend in this fight is your meter. When in doubt take it out (the meter that is). Find your happy place too. Mine as you know is in the garden. Around here we only get a 4 to 6 month season but I make as much of it as I can. Your garden is filled to the brim with all types of critters be they insects, animals or birds.
You may have another hobby. It is always useful to have something that you can do to take away your worries. I might pop up again sometime. One never knows.
In closing all that I've shared with you has hopefully helped you all out. I now have another health crisis on my hands which is far worse than my diabetes. Well we don't live forever do we?
Your fellow diabetic and friend,
Kathy Scotti
EXERCISE AND DIABETES
Many diabetics are leery of exercise because they think they need to be excessive or that it doesn't help but they are wrong. First, any physical activity that gets you off the couch or the recliner is helpful.
Walking is the best but some of us are so loaded with arthritis that sometimes it makes it difficult. Basically, we need 20 minutes of physical activity that gets our hearts pumping faster at least 3 times a week. If you don't have a dog to walk like I do you can use different modes of exercise that you can purchase online like a stationary bike, a device that you can use sitting down that gets your feet moving and so many others or there is the
gym.
At the gym there are weight machines you can use that you can adjust as needed. Don't try to do too much at first. It's best to work your way up gradually. I use the stationary bike because I have a bad back and the treadmill is hard on it. I can't use the elliptical
either for the same reason but do not despair there are plenty of machines that you can try out to see what is best for you. Also most of our health care plans have gyms that will not charge you a thing. My gym even has a wonderful pool that is open for the entire year. I like to use it in the summer because they remove the winter bubble which encloses it and we can enjoy swimming in the sun. There are trees as well to get under if need be. You can incorporate both gym workouts and home workouts if you want.
As a diabetic it is imperative to get moving. It helps keep your glucose levels in check. Be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar. I always have a power bar or even candy available just in case I begin to feel woozy. I can always tell. But I've been a diabetic for decades. This is something you will get to know.
COMPOSTING TO HELP DIABETICS RAISE HEALTHY VEGGIES
I have a plastic stationary bin but there are different types you can buy like the one you can turn which is easier to use. Periodically you need to turn the compost materials in your bin so with the one you can turn you don't need to use a pitchfork inside the bin as I do. By the time you've had it a few years all the microorganisms should be fine with out you needing to turn as much.
A compost bin is great in so many ways. You can put table and vegetable scraps in it instead of the garbage bin so you are helping the environment. Be sure to avoid any oils or fats. Also great is the fact that there is nothing better than compost for plants and you can mix it in your containers with potting soil so you can pay less for all those bags of potting soil needed for containers.
I also use leaves, grass clippings, egg shells and coffee grounds which comprise the high nitrogen materials. High carbon materials are dry leaves, pine needles and corn cobbs. However the corn
cobbs take forever to decompose at least at first.
You need to water the pile occasionally but don't soak it.
Microorganisms need oxygen so turning and watering the pile helps them. They turn soil nutrients into a form that can be readily absorbed by your plants. You can use the compost for any plants that you have in your garden including your perennials.
Remember that the healthier your diet is the healthier you will be as a diabetic or a nondiabetic with other health issues.
You can start composting even at this time of year and you can put veggie scraps in the pile throughout the winter months even if it is cold. The pile will eventually reach an inner temp of perhaps 100 degrees which helps the little micros do their work but be advised that putting worms in is sometimes not a good idea as they can die easily at that temp. I've never used them and have some very nice dark compost. If earthworms get in that's fine. Good luck!!!
Pluses and Minuses for My Garden This Year
So although as you can see with my descriptions to the pics I was very pleased with most of what I produced this summer by way of veggies. There were some minuses that I will try to improve upon next year. The zucchini only produced two so either I put them where they didn't get enough sun, which is what I
think happened or those pesky little sugar ants got into the bottom of the container. It's happened before. I'll know soon enough. Speaking of pesky, some people don't know that chipmunks eat tomatoes but I've actually seen them do it. That's why I pick them when they are just starting to get pink. Then I take them in and they ripen under the kitchen sink window. I'm glad that my collard greens and kale are beginning to thrive again after a summer
of being eaten by slugs. I will be able to use them again in my stir fries. They are very healthy greens with lots of iron and other minerals we need in them. Try them even if you think you don't like Kale or Collards. They are so much better when grown fresh.
All of the different types of tomatoes I put in have done well from the husky cherry variety to the San Marzanos. Can't complain there with one exception. I was disappointed that the hanging pear drop hybrid did not grow well. I only got a few of them.
I'm going to talk about composting next. Potted soil is expensive to buy so you can save the earth and your pocket book if you compost. More next month.
Stir fry garden veggies.

Herbs that were used are rosemary and oregano because of adding in shrimp, plus parsley and basil.ππΎπ π

The beauty of Memorial Day is upon us, and this year we may be more likely to celebrate (still safely and obeying cdc protocols), due to the availability of vaccines and many states relaxing social distancing rules. However, we still need to focus on our overall health. Attached is a link to a list of 16 foods that have been found to best control diabetes. As Erin Kelly states in her article for healthline, the bottom line is to manage your diabetes. "When diabetes is not well managed, it increases your risk for several serious diseases. But eating foods that help keep blood sugar, insulin, and inflammation manageable can dramatically reduce your risk for complications. Just remember, although these foods may help manage blood sugar, the most important factor in healthy blood sugar management is following an overall nutritious, balanced diet." So stay on track and have a wonderful, safe and healthy holiday weekend.

Spiders...it had to be spiders. But, the research detailed in this article by Alexandra Thompson is really novel and interesting, despite the obvious focus on my 8 legged nemesis.
"Venom from the Mexican blonde tarantula has been found to increase production of the blood sugar-lowering hormone insulin. Type 2 diabetes comes about when a patient's body cannot make a sufficient level of insulin or that which is produced does not work properly.
A team from Ulster University in Northern Ireland has created a synthetic version of a key molecule within the venom, which rapidly reduced blood sugar levels in mice with elevated glucose."
Tarantula venom shows promise as type 2 diabetes treatment The poisonous substance 'contains millions of biologically active molecules that may have therapeutic potential'.

βOur study shows that we were able to build a foundation for the development of oral insulin using D-DNP peptides,β said research lead Shingo Ito, PhD. βIn the future, we expect to contribute to oral insulin drug discovery by developing a method to further enhance insulin absorption by the small intestine by optimizing the administration method.β Ito and colleagues reported on their studies in Molecular Pharmaceutics, in a paper titled, βOral Coadministration of Zn-Insulin with DβForm Small Intestine-Permeable Cyclic Peptide Enhances Its Blood Glucose-Lowering Effect in Mice.β
Could Peptide-Insulin Mixture Unlock the Prospect of Oral Diabetes Therapy? Results of studies in mice could represent the foundation for developing more patient-friendly form of insulin for diabetes therapy.
