1) Independence Day became an unpaid federal holiday in 1870 and wasn't declared a paid holiday for federal employees until 1941.
2) John Adams and Thomas Jefferson signed the Declaration of Independence, and both died within hours of each other on July 4, 1826. James Monroe also died on July 4 but in 1831.
3) Only John Hancock and Charles Thompson signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4. The rest of the 56 delegates signed the document on August 2, 1776.
4) Massachusetts was the first state to recognize the Fourth of July as an official holiday in 1781.
