As the new year gets closer, I wanted to share something I do throughout the year to track my reading in the hopes that it might inspire some of you to do the same. I create a spread in my “journal” to track and rate the books I’ve read. I also try to create an artistic representation for the books that have resonated with me. These usually include a few quotes. Sometimes I create them as I start to read the book and add to them. Other times I’ve waited until I finished the book to celebrate it with a spread in my journal. Here are a few examples from the past few years.

I am supporting a 6-year old budding author, Navya Manchanda!

Navya is publishing her book, A Trip to the Moon for Homework, next month. It's a story of a 6-year old girl, Ayla, and her pet dog, Tina, and how they go on an unusual celestial adventure to complete Ayla’s homework. The book is suitable for kids aged 5-8 and will be available in both ebook and paperback.

These are the types of journals I use for art journals, bullet journals, and reading journals. There are journals available that prevent bleed through from pens and markers. I use washi tape to put two pages together for extra thickness instead of using the specially designed journals. Instagram.com/reneeswrites

Today,
in the ceaseless repetition of daily tasks,
I found something quite remarkable.

I was granted a sudden appreciation for the growth that is marked by endings.

You see,
so many milestones are marked by firsts.
First smiles, first words, first steps.

But there is such significance in the lasts as well.

The last time they are held in crook of your arm, or fall asleep against your chest.

The last time
they hold your hand to cross the street,
Or run into your open arms.

The last time they are carried.

For without realizing it, there will be a last for everything, and those lasts will go unnoticed.

But the true growth of a child is not measured in firsts, or candles, or marks on the wall,

but in the total sum of the endings.
