Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is an integral piece of the pre and post frenuloplasty (release) puzzle.๐งฉ
Therapy is recommended prior to a to ensure the muscles are maximized and functioning to the best of their ability which assists the provider in performing a thorough release.
Myofunctional Therapy post-release works to establish an adequate resting posture of the tongue and proper function of the orofacial complex.
Donโt let the missing puzzle piece impact your results โฆ is a key piece to any functional frenuloplasty ๐
I want you to ask yourself: Do I breathe through my nose or mainly my mouth? Has my dentist told me Iโm grinding my teeth? Do I frequently wake throughout the night? Is my tongue resting against the roof of my mouth?
Depending on your answer, you may have an undiagnosed airway issue, myofunctional disorder, or a combination of the two! Our body tends to compensate to help us thrive. So let us help you get to the root cause!
Even adult patients see results when correcting poor tongue posture & an improper swallow pattern! This case is still a work in progress but there are great benefits to correcting improper tongue position & function!
๐please note the pre-myo photo on the top showcases the only teeth occluding are the right molars (located to the left in the photo)
Our tongue plays a major role when it comes to the growth and development of our jaws & face, how we breathe, how we speak & swallow, and even how we sleep! ๐
If the tongue does not function properly then those muscles wonโt be activated to support a healthy airway, proper growth and eruption patterns, and how we thrive in life! ๐๐ผ๐ซ๐ง๐พโโ๏ธ๐ฆท
Itโs never too late to start Myofunctional Therapy! ๐
Tongue function, posture, and range of motion can impact our day to day activities including our sleep! There is no need to wait - reach out to your local therapist to see how they can help ๐

Where is your tongue resting? ๐
The rest position or rest posture of our tongue impacts , our breathing, and it even activates our rest and digest messages to the brain ๐ง
Recurring ear infections can be a sign of low tongue posture (where the tongue rests/functions in the floor of the mouth), restricted or limited mobility of the tongue, and or a dysfunctional swallow pattern.
When the tongue is able to reach, rest, and function in the palate (roof of mouth), the pressure from an adequate swallow will help to flush the eustachian tube of residual fluid which leads to a less likely hood of ear infections!
Find an or near you to help correct your dysfunctional swallow pattern, restricted tongue mobility, or low resting tongue posture!
Sleep disordered breathing is a scale of symptoms that include mouth breathing during the day or night. Too many symptoms may lead to a diagnosis of Sleep Apnea! We must get to the root cause of sleep disordered breathing, mouth breathing, and upper airway resistance syndrome!

There are only a handful of professions that are able to become Certified in Orofacial Myology/Myofunctional Therapyโฆ.

The tongue must have adequate space in order to live and rest comfortably in the palate! If the garage (palate/roof of mouth) is too small, the car (tongue) will not fit ๐ ๐๐

โTongue-Tied" or Ankyloglossia is classified when the band of tissue under your tongue is short & tight, restricting the tongue's range of motion & function.
This little band of tissue can impact speech, cause an increase in dental decay, affect breastfeeding & latch, alter proper swallowing, create body compensations, & impede adequate airway function! These are just to name a few complications. ๐ฎ
Find a provider who is trained in diagnosing Tethered Oral Tissues to help determine how severe your restriction is! ๐

The early, the better! Screening all patients for myofunctional disorders, airway restriction, and poor craniofacial growth patterns is the key to helping them achieve optimal health!
All the possibilities of low tongue posture!
๐
Low tongue posture
When your tongue rests low in the floor of the mouth, chronic mouth breathing often takes place.
Chronic mouth breathing affects craniofacial growth & development since the jaw is hinged open and grows in a downward pattern creating a dolichocephalic appearance, underdeveloped facial muscles, and poor jaw definition.
An orofacial myofunctional assessment helps determine WHY patients have low tongue posture and what steps are needed to correct it!
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is an individualized, exercise-based therapy that retrains the orofacial muscles to function properly.
By correcting maladaptive muscle patterns, patients are able to function better during speech, chewing, swallowing, and breathing.
