Thank you to the United Way of Northern New Mexico for asking me to serve as the 2023 campaign kickoff guest speaker. This years theme is ā€œThe Power of You!ā€ United Way of Northern New Mexico provides critical funding to organizations who are committed to serving our most vulnerable in our communities in Los Alamos and Rio Arriba Counties. It is the Power of donors, nonprofit organizations, committed Board members and people living in our communities that truly remind us that we are valuable, we are loved, and we are enough!

The Boys and Girls Club of Generational Empowerment have partnered with NBA and New Mexico Lobo Legend Kenny Thomas on a Golf Tournament on September 18, 2023. All proceeds raised will go directly to supporting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Generational Empowerment and their after school and all day summer programs in La Puebla, Santa Cruz and the Espanola Valley. The Clubs serve over 1,000 children a year. Leading up to the tournament was a comedy show last night with Veteran Comedian/Actor Steven Michael Quezada who played Gomez on the Emmy winning TV series Breaking Bad.

I had a fun time cheering on the Lobos at the UNM vs. NMSU Rio Grand Rivalry Football Game with great friends and legislative colleagues. Fun Fact: The rivalry began in 1894 and is still going strong 129 years later.

Fun Fact: On March 23, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill establishing the ā€œsmell of roasting chilesā€ as the official state aroma. It's the first such designation by any state.

LOWRIDER MUSEM: Thank you to Rio Arriba County Economic Development Director, Christine Bustos for hosting a Lowrider Museum update meeting. We continue to move forward with the plan to open the museum at the Empowerment Center on the west side of the beautiful Espanola Valley. The museum will shower case cars on a rotational basis, share the history of lowriding in northern New Mexico, provide demonstrations, and house interactive displays. More to comeā€¦.

The Senate Rules Committee held hearings on over 30 confirmations on Thursday and Friday in Albuquerque. This ambitious agenda allowed the Committee to vet individuals serving the public in diverse roles throughout the state on various boards and commissions. Thank you to all of the conferees for their willingness to serve our great state!

Carson National Forest fire crews and local fire departments are taking suppression actions on the 100-acre El Valle Fire on Carson National Forest. It is located in the vicinity of El Valle and Las Trampas, NM.

The Taos County Sheriffā€™s Department has called for the following evacuations, using the Ready, Set, Go! system (List updated at 4:38 p.m.):

Go: El Valle, Las Trampas
Set: Upper Ojitos, Ojo Sarco, Chamisal and Llano San Juan
Evacuation centers are located at (added 5 p.m.):

Truchas Services Center

Truchas, NM 87578

PeƱasco Community Center,
14136 NM-75
PeƱasco, NM 87553

This is an emerging incident and residents and visitors are urged to continue to follow developments and adhere to emergency personnel instructions.

Other closures include Highway 76 between Truchas, NM, and the intersection with Highway 75 in PeƱasco, NM. The Santa Barbara Campground is also closed.

The fire is burning in timber with a rapid rate of spread. Aircraft and more ground crews are on order.

Smoke from the fire was first reported at 12:49 p.m.

I had a great evening with Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Secretary Deb Haaland, my legislative colleagues, and other leaders from around New Mexican for a conversation and a movie (Barbie). We discussed womenā€™s struggles, female empowerment, leadership, resilience, and so much more! We ended the evening by watching the new Barbie movie which has a storyline of resilience and strength. Congratulations to Santa Clara Pueblo Potter, Jennifer Tafoya for winning the Best of Show award at the 101st Santa Fe Indian Market.

Jenniferā€™s winning piece, chosen by over 60 judges with varied expertise, is a small black pot etched with realistic dinosaurs running through a natural landscape. Start to finish, she worked on the pot for about a month, including 50 to 100 hours of meticulously etching the design.

Join me tomorrow at 10 am for the Los Alamos Rodeo Parade! This hometown parade is a highlight of Los Alamos County's Fair and Rodeo weekend. The parade brings locals and visitors to downtown Los Alamos (Central Ave.) to celebrate the western roots of the community. I hope to see you there!

Woman from around Northern New Mexico had the opportunity to meet other local woman who are business owners and learned how so start their own business. The successful event focused on empowering woman to start their own business, finding their passion and transforming communities.

Thank you to Roger Montoya and Moving Arts EspaƱola for bringing youth voices together with legislators at a roundtable event focused on policy solutions for navigating societal barriers to success. Participating youth recently completed a seven week Career Technical Education program in partnership with Future Focused Education and the National Latino Behavioral Health Associationsā€™ Connecting our Voices career pathways network. The youth leaders talked about the need of breaking the stigma of mental health, training their peers in mental health first aid, the need of therapists in schools, art programs to help decrease social anxiety, school based health centers, and the importance of internships to help build self-esteem.

I look forward to continuing my working relationship with the youth leaders and my legislative colleagues.

COUNTY FAIR: I had a great time at the 69th annual Rio Arriba County Fair riding a mechanical bull, chatting with participants, catching-up up with old friends and meeting new ones. Iā€™m so proud of all the participants and the hard work they put into raising their animals, working on art projects, preparing for events in the arena, and baking some delicious goodies. Congratulations to the Rio Arriba County Fair Association for a very successful event and thank you to Rep. Teresa Leger FernĆ”ndez for joining us!
