On This Date: 79 years ago today, D-Day June 6, 1944!
The D-Day invasion was the largest naval, air and land operation in history, and within a few days about 326,000 troops, more than 50,000 vehicles and some 100,000 tons of equipment had landed.
Those boys that made it and are still living today are like 95 to 102 years old, and there aren't many left. Thank them & hug them! 🇺🇸
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, about 167,000 U.S. World War II veterans were living as of 2022, though the number is quickly declining. About 180 die every day. ~ September 2022. 🇺🇸

Memorial Day Weekend & Memorial Day can be a tough weekend and day for many. (at the very end, there is a link to a song)
It should not be about barbecues, parties, store sales, etc. It should be about the remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives while serving and fighting for our great country! 🇺🇲
RIP to all the great men and women who paid that ultimate sacrifice with their lives for our great country for us to be FREE! 🇺🇲❤
FYI - this is not the weekend to thank a Veteran (That's Veteran's Day and any other day.) Let them mourn the losses of their brothers and sisters.
BUDDY CHECK! If you are in pain, feeling like your life is slipping away, you feel like you are not wanted & need to talk, call someone! (And this goes for civilians as well!)
For those of you who always wonder about the photos or scenes showing the rifle with bayonet in the sand with the helmet, boots and dog tags; here is some good information (photo at end):
The rifle is affixed with a bayonet and inverted, signifying that the Soldier went down fighting. The boots signify the Soldier’s last march onto the battlefield. Dog tags are imprinted with the Soldier’s name and hung from the rifle so their identity will never be forgotten. The helmet is placed atop the rifle representing what the Soldier stood for and signifying that their battle is now over. The Battlefield Cross is a sacred symbol amongst military members. Since a funeral is typically not possible during wartime, these symbols serve as a rallying point where surviving members of a unit can mourn and remember their fallen comrades.
This Memorial Day, reach out to the Veterans that you know and give them a simple message: “We Remember.” We remember our country’s fallen, your brothers and sisters, and we appreciate and honor their sacrifice.

Happy Mother's Day to those mother's who raised strong men & women who answered the call of duty! And to those mom's who lost their children while serving our country!
Happy Mother's Day to those mother's who currently serve or who have served, some who are currently away from their children and family today!

Today marks V-Day aka V-E Day.... Victory Day in Europe.
On May 8, 1945, both Great Britain and the United States celebrate Victory in Europe Day. Cities in both nations, as well as formerly occupied cities in Western Europe, put out flags and banners, rejoicing in the defeat of the N**i war machine during World War II.
Thanking the men & women who have sacrificed theirs lives for our freedom and who continue to serve and protect!
Mental Health Awareness Month is observed in the month of May which has been started in the United States since 1949. Actually, mental health should be observed 365 days a year!
Many go through some sort of mental issue, may it be an active duty member, a veteran and or even a civilian. There are approximately 22 veterans a day who commit su***de! Even 1 a day is too many!
We must be vigilant in keeping an eye on our brothers and sisters, to be there for them 24/7, get them active in activities, to listen to them and get them help if need be. There are some excellent organizations out there to help these individuals, both in the military and civilian sectors. Veterans can reach out to Vet Centers, a veteran organization that will help both veterans and their families with many different kinds of services. There is also NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

On this Date: On May 2, 2011, Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, was killed by U.S. forces during a raid on his compound hideout in Pakistan.
Those in the military took an oath and solemnly swore that we would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that we would bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that we would obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed!
The raid began around 1 a.m. local time (4 p.m. EST on May 1, 2011 in the United States), when 23 U.S. Navy SEALs in two Black Hawk helicopters descended on the compound in Abbottabad, a tourist and military center north of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. One of the helicopters crash-landed into the compound but no one aboard was hurt.
During the raid, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, five people, including bin Laden and one of his adult sons, were killed by U.S. gunfire. No Americans were injured in the assault. Afterward, bin Laden’s body was flown by helicopter to Afghanistan for official identification, then buried at an undisclosed location in the Arabian Sea less than 24 hours after his death, in accordance with Islamic practice.
Let's honor and remember Gold Star Spouses Day today, April 5th!
Gold Spouses Day is observed annually on April 5. We honor and grieve with the families of lost military service members. Often known as Gold Star Wives Day, this day has now become inclusive of all family members — male or female — who have lost loved ones through service in the military. This day lets these affected families know that we remember their sacrifice, and honor their loss. Remembrance ceremonies are held, and there are “remember the fallen” road races in their honor.
The first Gold Star Wives Day occurred in December 2010, but two years later it was officially recognized by the Senate and officially became Gold Star Wives Day on April 5th. The recognition has now become more inclusive and is known as Gold Star Spouses Day.
Today, March 29, is National Vietnam Veterans Day! We honor and salute those who served during the Vietnam War!
29 March is a fitting choice for a day honoring Vietnam veterans. It was chosen to be observed in perpetuity as March 29, 1973 was the day United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished and also the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. In addition, on and around this same day Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war.
The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration honors all veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location, and their families.
The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by 45th U.S. President Donald J. Trump, designating every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.
"We make no distinction between veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or who were stationed elsewhere during the Vietnam War period. All were called to serve and none could self-determine where they would serve."
As of 2020, there were approximately 6.3 million veterans of the United States military still alive who served during the period of the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1975. Around 8.75 million service personnel served during the war, with 40% of those stationed in Vietnam and the surrounding Southeast Asian countries.
Living history is no more for those who served on the USS Arizona! Rest in Peace Jack Holden! Fair Winds and Following Seas sailor! Thank you for your service!
We honor National Medal of Honor Day!
National Medal of Honor Day is observed every year on March 25th, which was established by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861. The Medal of Honor is our nation’s highest recognition of valor in combat and this day is dedicated to Medal of Honor Recipients.
Each branch of the U.S. military awards the Medal of Honor to those who have distinguished themselves “conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity” above and beyond the call of duty, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs official site.
The Medal of Honor is awarded only to military members; it is awarded by Congress and is also known as the Congressional Medal of Honor. National Medal of Honor Day is a time to remember the sacrifices of men and women in uniform who have earned this highest of military honors.
Origins of the Medal of Honor (MoH)
There were medals awarded that served at the time as forerunners of the MoH. These included the Fidelity Medallion awarded in the late 1700s to only three persons associated with the capture of a spy associated with Benedict Arnold; another precursor to the MoH was George Washington’s Badge of Military Merit. The last “proto-MoH” was the Medal of Valor, approved by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861.
In 1862, the Army Medal of Honor was created thanks to a resolution introduced by the Senate Committee on Military Affairs, Senator Henry Wilson. In 1915, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard members were authorized to receive the Medal of Honor, and by the mid-1960s the United States Air Force also had its own version of the MoH.
Medal Of Honor Award Criteria
The original MoH criteria include the following as presented on the Medal Of Honor Society official site. The medal may be awarded for meritorious actions above and beyond the call of duty:
* While engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States
* While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force
* While serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party Medal of Honor Recipients
The first Medal of Honor recipient was Army Private Jacob Parrott. That MoH was awarded in 1863 as part of a Civil War mission behind enemy lines. Since that time, more than 3,540 Medals of Honor have been awarded.

Celebrate Roise the Riveter Day!
Rosie the Riveter Day is an observation honoring the hard work and sacrifices American women made in the workplace during World War Two!
During this time, women across the nation traded their pre-war activities for work in factories, electronics, welding facilities and many other industries supporting the American war effort. Some five million civilian women took over what used to be thought of stereotypically as “man’s work,” joining some 350,000 women who served during World War Two in uniform.
Did you know? Between 1940 and 1945, the female percentage of the U.S. workforce increased from 27 percent to nearly 37 percent, and by 1945 nearly one out of every four married women worked outside the home.
Did you know? Though women who entered the workforce during World War II were crucial to the war effort, their pay continued to lag far behind their male counterparts: Female workers rarely earned more than 50 percent of male wages.
Did you know? L***rCakes.com is not only veteran owned, but also woman owned!
On This Day: The United States Military Academy, established on March 16, 1802, was the first military school in the United States! It was founded by Congress for the purpose of educating and training young men in the theory and practice of military science. Located at West Point, New York, the U.S. Military Academy is often simply known as West Point. The Academy fell under the auspices of the US Army Corps of Engineers and all the superintendents through 1866 were engineer officers. West Point - The U.S. Military Academy
Located on the high west bank of New York’s Hudson River, West Point had a major role in our nation’s history during the American Revolution. The fort was built to protect the Hudson River Valley from British attack. Both the American patriots and the British realized the strategic importance of the prominent plateau on the west bank of the Hudson River. General George Washington considered West Point to be the most important strategic location in America and in 1778 selected Taddeus Kosciuszko, a Polish engineer, to design the fortifications for West Point. Washington later transferred his headquarters near West Point in 1779. American Continental Line soldiers constructed forts, gun batteries, redoubts and installed a 65-ton iron chain across the Hudson to block British invasions along the river.
Fortress West Point was never captured by the British, but in 1780, Patriot General Benedict Arnold, the commander of the fort, agreed to surrender West Point to the British in exchange for 6,000 pounds. However, the plot was uncovered before it fell into British hands, and Arnold fled to the British for protection.
Ten years after the establishment of the U.S. Military Academy in 1802, the growing threat of another war with Great Britain resulted in congressional action to expand the academy’s facilities and increase the West Point corps. Beginning in 1817, the U.S. Military Academy was reorganized by superintendent Sylvanus Thayer—later known as the “father of West Point”—and the school became one of the nation’s finest sources of civil engineers. During the Mexican-American War, West Point graduates filled the leading ranks of the victorious U.S. forces, and with the outbreak of the Civil War former West Point classmates regretfully lined up against one another in the defense of their native states.
Major Sylvanus Thayer, considered the “Father of the Military Academy,” served as Superintendent from 1817-1833. He improved academic standards, instilled military discipline, and emphasized honorable conduct and officership. Aware of our young nation’s need for engineers, Thayer made civil and military engineering the foundation of the curriculum and the top few in each class became engineers. The Academy was the first engineering school in the United States. Other officers served in the infantry, cavalry (dragoons), artillery and other branches in the tough frontier Army.
In 1877, the first African American cadet graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, and in 1976, the first female cadets were admitted. The academy is now under the general direction and supervision of the department of the U.S. Army and has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students.
Today, West Point is the oldest continuously occupied regular army post in the United States.

Today is National K9 Veterans Day! National K9 Veterans' Day!
We salute those dogs for their service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history.
It was on March 13, 1942, that the Army began training for its new War Dog Program, also known as the "K-9 Corps," according to American Humane, marking the first time that dogs were officially a part of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Officially a part of the service or not, the dogs of war span centuries and include such heroes as Sgt. Stubby, the original war dog; Chips, the most decorated dog in World War II; Lex, who retired with his fallen owners family; and Cairo, the Navy SEAL working dog on the bin Laden raid.
* Sergeant Stubby, a short brindle bull terrier mutt, was officially a decorated hero of World War I. The award was not a formal U.S. military commendation, but it symbolically confirmed Stubby, who’d also earned one wound stripe and three service stripes, as the greatest war dog in the nation’s history. According to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, he was the first dog ever given rank in the U.S. Army. His glory was even hailed in France, which also presented him with a medal.
* Chips (1940–1946) was a trained sentry dog for United States Army, and reputedly the most decorated war dog from World War II. Chips was a German Shepherd-Collie-Malamute mix owned by Edward J. Wren of Pleasantville, New York.

* Lex - Marine Cpl. Dustin Lee was Lex's handler for two tours. Lex was beside Cpl. Dustin Lee when Lee was killed in a mortar attack in Falluja.
In spite of his injuries, the dog didn't want to leave Lee's side after the attack, according to the Marine's father. Other Marines reportedly had to pull the dog away from the young man's body so medics could reach him. Video Watch Lex demonstrate his talents »
Lex attended Lee's funeral in March, playing games with the 20-year-old Marine's younger brother on the sidelines.
Although some shrapnel remains in his body, Lex recovered from his wounds and returned to duty at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia.
Finally, on December 13, the Marines agreed to let Lex go live with Lee's family. It was the first time the Marines have released a dog before its retirement to a former handler's family.

On this day in history! The U.S.S. Monitor battles C.S.S. Virginia, called The Battle of Hampton Roads!
On March 9, 1862, one of the most famous naval battles in American history occurs as two ironclads, the U.S.S. Monitor and the C.S.S. Virginia, fight to a draw off Hampton Roads, Virginia during the Civil War! The ships pounded each other all morning but their armor plates easily deflected the cannon shots, signaling a new era of steam-powered iron ships.
The C.S.S. Virginia was originally the U.S.S. Merrimack, a 40-gun frigate launched in 1855. The Confederates captured it and covered it in heavy armor plating above the waterline. Outfitted with powerful guns, the Virginia was a formidable vessel when the Confederates launched her in February 1862. On March 8, the Virginia sunk two Union ships and ran one aground off Hampton Roads.
The battle demonstrated the viability of ironclad technology and provided a glimpse into the future of naval warfare.
“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.” ~ George S. Patton, Jr.

On this date in history, the U.S. Flag was raised on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima! February 23, 1944, 5 days after the Marines landed on the island!
"Among those who served on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue." - Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz
Nimitz said of those who fought on Iwo Jima, “Uncommon valor was a common virtue.” That statement is underscored by the 27 Medals of Honor awarded to Marines and Navy servicemen who fought there, the highest number awarded in a single battle!
Did you know? There were two flags that were raised. The first one by a Marine that had a small flag with him. A larger flag was ordered to be flown so the whole island could see the flag!

Who is getting excited about the Army Navy game December 10th!
The Army–Navy game is one of the most traditional and enduring rivalries in college football. This rivalry game between the Army Black Knights of the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York, and the Navy Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) at Annapolis, Maryland, first started on November 29, 1890! Army Black Knights Football West Point - The U.S. Military Academy Navy Football United States Naval Academy
Traditions:
The rivalry between Annapolis and West Point, while friendly, is intense. The phrases "Beat Navy!" and "Beat Army!" are ingrained in the respective institutions and have become a symbol of competitiveness, not just in the Army–Navy Game, but in the service of the country. The phrases are often used at the close of (informal) letters by graduates of both academies. A long-standing tradition at the Army–Navy football game is to conduct a formal "prisoner exchange" as part of the pre-game activities. The prisoners are the cadets and midshipmen currently spending the semester studying at the sister academy. After the exchange, students have a brief reprieve to enjoy the game with their comrades.
The American national anthem is sung by members of the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy choirs. At the end of the game, both teams' almae matres are performed. The winning team stands alongside the losing team and faces the losing academy's students; then the losing team accompanies the winning team, facing their students. This is done in a show of mutual respect and solidarity. Since the winning team's alma mater is always played last, the phrase "sing second" has become synonymous with winning the rivalry game.
No matter who you cheer for on this Saturday, remember that this is the only game where everyone playing is willing to die for everyone watching! Who are you rooting for this Saturday?
Are you in Philadelphia and or going to the game? Looking for a good tailgating event to attend? Check out the Travis Manion Foundation's tailgate! From 10 am to 3 pm! Tickets & Details: https://bit.ly/TravisManionFoundationArmyNavyTailgate2022
On December 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, killing more than 2,400 Americans. The U.S.S Arizona was completely destroyed and the U.S.S. Oklahoma capsized. A total of twelve ships sank or were beached in the attack and nine additional vessels were damaged. More than 160 aircraft were destroyed and more than 150 others damaged.
On December 8th, one day after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his speech describing the previous day as "a date which will live in infamy."
We are remembering all of those who were there that day, lost their lives, lost loved ones and much more. December 7, 1941. We Will Never Forget!
