We had a customer today who weve been working with on getting his attic insulated. He had $500-$550 power bills this winter before we went and did the first part. He was a unable at the time to do his whole house so he proposed the idea of doing half of it to which I agreed. 205-965-8352. This week i had a customer who has put two air conditioners in the house since hes been there and had complaints about the house still not being cool and his unit running all the time. When i looked in his attic he only had r-19 batt insulation in his attic. Number one…the minimum requirements for attics in Alabama are R-30 but 9 out of 10 houses we go in have R-19 or less and its usually less. If you can see the top of the boards thats a guaranteed sign youre under insulated and your hvac is being way overworked trying to keep up and it just cant. He couldnt get it below 74 during the day and hot days it would be 76 inside. I always recommend putting in blown in insulation instead of batts (cause its more air tight and efficient) and i always recommend to go to a level of R-36/R-38 because insulation will settle an inch or two and when it does you will still be between R-30 to R-34. So thats exactly what we did at his house and now his system isnt running non stop and hes loving walking in the door from work to a house at 71 degrees instead of 76. He called me and thanked me profusely for the work but hell really be happy once he sees the next 2 months power bills and how much they dropped. Hes literally been paying $3-450 dollars a month and has went thru two hvac systems which are usually between $6,000-$10,000 a pop. Getting his insulation done he spent a tiny fraction of of what a new system cost and is cooler,saving money, & will not be overworking the new system he just bought so he wont have to worry about buying another one for a long time( by the way if the machine breaks because of lack of insulation thats your fault and a warranty wont cover it usually). The point is you can throw tens of thousands of dollars into new AC systems while paying an extra couple hundred on the power bill…..or you can have your insulation done right,prolong the life of the system,save money on the power bill, & ACTUALLY BE COMFORTABLE with a system thats performing like it should.

Open your attic door and measure the depth of your insulation with a tape. If its not in between a range of 8.5-10 inches deep you need to add to the attic.
