My grandmother grew up in Cottondale on Peanut Road .
The daughter of Otto and Mary Ellen (Rooks)Young .
Otto ran a rolling store during WWII and took grocery’s and goods through out the community and also raised hogs. Contrary to what people may think it wasn’t just candy he sold essentials, while men were away at war he delivered goods to their loved ones who would have no way to get to town. He ran a daily route everyday but Sunday.Through Jackson,Washington and Holmes county’s.
My grandmother the matriarch of our family is an artist, but naturally you can’t earn and living painting around here, especially then . She she did what I think is the next best thing.Became a Cosmetologist,a few years later in July 1967 she took a job at the VOTEC teaching cosmetology. This would be her true calling, she is a natural teacher. She taught for 32 years, helped write the state test standards, started the advisory committee. If you talk to veteran stylist in this community she was their teacher and they loved her. Both of her daughters( Sonya and Renee) one daughter in law and her granddaughter all followed in her footsteps.Stand around for very long while I am doing hair and you will hear me bragging about her, hairstylist in my days have it easy compared to how things were when she started. She taught classes at one time on the second story of the first national bank in Chipley (The Mongoven Building ) with no running water. How do you teach cosmetology with no water ?
She’s brilliant leader that’s how, she made it happen.
