A piece of gold. The difference between pulling the horse around with the inside rein and riding him around with the inside leg to the outside rein. Your inside leg is a conduit to the horses inside hind. application of the inside leg , not holding, will cause the inside hind to step forward with a slight inclination toward the outside rein. The outside leg supports and stops the hind quarter swinging out. It also puts the horse forward to the outside rein creating a sort of triangulation. Everything starts with forward. This is how we develop serious carrying capacity. remember horses are not designed to carry weight. Sitting on them is the most unnatural thing we do. it is our job to take the muscles they have and help them to use them in the most efficient way to do what we want. If you are interested in learning more about how to achieve what i have described in this post see the e book "horses from courses" ( Scott Brodie ) it relates mostly to my system for Re training horses of the track but these classical principles developed over thousands of years work for all horses.

This is an Interesting read!

Horses and sweet potatoes?

Ulcers, 60-90% of show/performance horses have ulcers. Humans created stall confinement, grain and commercialized feeding. Horses are meant to spend all day, outside free grazing. ā€œIn a natural grazing situation, a steady flow of acid is required for digestion, so a horse's stomach produces acid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ā€“ up to 9 gallons of acidic fluid per day, even when not eating.ā€

So what happens to that acid when thereā€™s no roughage to break down, ulcers. How do we treat and prevent ulcers in our barn? We preventatively treat each horse with omeprazole paste the week before and during each showing. Itā€™s cheap, easy and effective!! Want further benefits? Itā€™s in the common grocery store sweet potato! Why?

ā€œOn top of protein and dietary fiber sweet potatoes also have a very good selection of vitamins and minerals:
* Vitamin A ā€“ As well as boosting your horseā€™s immune system and strengthening his bones, Vitamin A can also help to reduce the risk of cataracts.
* Vitamin C ā€“ Like Vitamin A, Vitamin C can help to improve your horseā€™s immune system but it can also help to heal wounds and keep your horseā€™s teeth, bones, and cartilage healthy.
* Vitamin B5 ā€“ Part of the B complex vitamin group, Vitamin B5 can help to keep your horseā€™s coat in good condition. It also works to aid digestion, especially in the digestive tract.
* Vitamin B6 ā€“ Another B complex vitamin, itā€™s known for its ability to reduce the symptoms of some forms of arthritis as well as keeping the eyes healthy. If your horse suffers from depression then Vitamin B6 can help with this.
* Vitamin E ā€“ Known for its ability to fight infection, Vitamin E also works to maintain healthy skin, eyes, and even a healthy coat.
* Potassium ā€“ You might not realize it but potassium is actually one of the most important minerals in the body, it works to keep a horseā€™s muscles working properly and will also help to reduce tiredness after exercise.
* Manganese ā€“ Not only does manganese help to keep your horseā€™s bones strong and healthy but it can also reduce inflammation. In my opinion, though the biggest role that manganese plays is in the regulation of blood sugar, this means that it may be good for horses that suffer from conditions such as Equine Cushings Disease.ā€

Maybe you will consider adding sweet potatoes to your show horses regimen, we have, and we have seen outstanding results! Our biggest sweet tater eater in the barn is 17+ hand gentle giant Heā€™s Forrest Gump! They helped him gain over 300lbs and help to curb his proneness to colic. Thank you to Dr Mendenhall at Equine Services for your recommendation!

Back pain can cause stifle pain!
It's just like in our own back, your back becomes tight the pain moves down into your leg which sometimes can cause sciatica pain, which then moves down to your knees, which is why a lot of people will say they have knee pain when it's really coming from the back. It's the same thing in the horse which is one reason why the toes point out when trying to stand square or even when they're not standing square. šŸ™‚
