The Electric Car’s History Goes Back Further Than You Think 24/06/2024

The first electric car was developed in 1830 and wasn't yet practical until the 1890's.

In fact by 1900, in the United States, 38% of US automobiles, 33,842 cars, were powered by electricity (40% were powered by steam, and 22% by gasoline).

The first gasoline powered car was built by in 1885 by German Karl Benz and the first gas station wasn't built until twenty years later in 1905.

I'm sure there were many skeptics who announced:

"Cars won't last, the horse and buggy will be back in no time!"

"Streetcars are more efficient and reliable."

Yet as we all know 119 years later there are a total of 196,643 retail gas station locations and 278,870,463 cars & trucks in the United States of America (USA).

Again everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but you can't make up your own facts.

The fact of the matter if it took 20 years for the first gas station to be normalized, we can't expect the infrastructure to support electric vehicles to seemingly happen over night.

IMO this has little to do with Biden or Climate Change as much as it has to do with commonsense.

The Electric Car’s History Goes Back Further Than You Think The first electric cars appeared long before the earliest gas autos, and the history of electric cars is littered with innovative takes on four-wheeled transit.

Saturday I had the honor of learning something I was previously unaware of--- the historical significance of a location we’ve all passed before--Camp Ward.

In the backdrop of the Coleman A. Young Recreation Center, and adjacent to Ralph C. Bunche Preparatory Academy & Robert Bradby Drive lies Camp Ward, the training grounds & encampment for the 102nd United States Colored Infantry which proudly served in this Nation's 1st Civil War.

While my kids could care less about anything except the playground, I brought them so I can one day share the story of their 5x great grandfather, Jefferson Davis aka Uncle Jeff.

"Uncle Jeff" as he was known in Delray is my maternal great grandmother’s, grandfather.

A few weeks after he enlisted in the 102nd United States Colored Infantry in 1863, his house burned down in Ann Arbor (the current site of the Washtenaw County Administration Building @ 220 N. Main Street) and he lost all his papers.

The following morning he was arrested by mistake, charged as a deserter and taken to Jackson.

Upon release he returned as a recruiter for the 102nd until the conclusion of the war.

The mistake wasn't rectified until 1889 when Congressman James Gorman faithfully assisted him in getting his record cleared.

Thus he was awarded a pension of $12 per month and one thousand dollars in back pay totaling $3,746.56; adjusted for inflation that's the equivalent of $127,899.82 in 2024 USD.

May his and other true patriots service in their fight for freedom, justice and equality never be lost by those who seek to revise history for their personal/collective self-gratification 🇺🇸

Obama Campaign Official Peggy Moore and Wife Killed in Calif. Car Crash 15/06/2024

Life is truly what happens while we make plans for the future.

Several months ago I received a text message inquiry about my desire to lead a national petition drive for a potential Presidential candidate out of LA.

After several back and forth phone calls and zoom meetings the opportunity quickly dissipated as it was admittedly a political Hail Mary.

In the aftermath those conversations quickly blossomed into a professional friendship with a number of prospective deals on the table.

The last prospective search I lead for her was met with radio silence. I overthought for weeks like I wonder if I took too long, more specifically why not just say you took too long the opportunity has passed.

She’d shared with me the month prior how she planned to visit her Family in OKC and although it was a short trip she enjoyed her time and would be hitting up some concerts & taking some trips with her partner down soon in SoCal.

It was only yesterday that I learned of Peggy and her partners tragic death in SoCal nearly a month ago.

She was scheduled to work with us on our national roll out of a non partisan voter tool, but as everything has divinely lined up over the past several weeks, I came to divine realization on the card ride home yesterday, she’s still working behind the scenes as part of the team.

RIP Margaret Peggy Moore | Hope Wood 🫡

Detroit pays lip service to neighborhood developers, but keeps getting in their way 12/06/2024

Chase Cantrell, the founder of Building Community Value and a developer, has worked on his own projects and interacted with dozens of mostly small, minority-led development firms.

He described the permitting process as “incredibly inefficient.” His firm Speramus Partners developed a building on West McNichols Road that houses a brewery. Cantrell said around 10 different city departments were involved in his permit and came back with notes and corrections. It took many months for BSEED to issue the permit.

It’s also expensive. His permit cost more than $20,000.

“Most first-time developers have no clue of the cost,” Cantrell said. “And in a system that feels this inefficient, you wonder what you’re paying for. It’s definitely not speed.”

Detroit pays lip service to neighborhood developers, but keeps getting in their way Detroit developers who work on smaller, community projects said the city's red tape and bureacracy make building a serious struggle.

'A bright new beginning': DTE replacing coal-burning plant with large-scale battery storage 11/06/2024

The Michigan Public Service Commission approved DTE's plans for the lithium iron-phosphate battery storage facility in March.

Battery storage allows utilities to squirrel away extra renewable electricity generated by wind turbines and solar panels on windy, sunny days. Then, the grid can draw energy from those batteries when energy demands outstrip the wind and sun's supplies.

'A bright new beginning': DTE replacing coal-burning plant with large-scale battery storage A new state law mandating carbon-free energy by 2040 requires more storage of electricity generated by solar, wind and other renewable energy sources.

Pros and cons of solar energy 07/06/2024

The efficiency of solar panels has seen "significant progress" in recent years, said The Independent, "primarily boosted by the so-called 'miracle material' perovskite", which consists of calcium titanium oxide.

One of the most persistent concerns over solar panels is their capacity to generate enough energy to cover cloudy spells, but perovskite solar cells "are able to capture about 20 per cent more energy from sunlight than traditional ones made from silicon", said the Financial Times. It's no wonder the material is "the talk of solar energy circles", although production would need to ramp up significantly if they were to become standard on the global market.

Pros and cons of solar energy Solar power could become the primary source of electricity worldwide by 2050 – but there are still clouds in the forecast

Celebrating the End of the Fairness Doctrine 31/05/2024

“A republic, if you can keep it.”
—-Benjamin Franklin

We currently live in a chaotic echo chamber which only serves to amplify division and discord, instead of unity; all at the expense of We the People.

The current path is not only illogical, it fundamentally unsustainable.

In a fair and just world the adults in Congress would move to restore order in sponsoring the Fairness and Accountability in Broadcasting Act (2024); unfortunately that’s not the reality of the situation at this time.

Australia-Asia PowerLink | Bechtel 29/05/2024

The world is on the cusp of an energy transformation that could make the Industrial Revolution look minor.

Mike Cannon-Brookes is banking on the Land Down Under to be a major driver of that change.

The billionaire co-founder of software giant Atlassian plans for Australia, where he grew up, to become the hub for the two biggest renewable-energy projects ever.

According to Bloomberg, the SunCable project will build a 20-gigawatt solar farm and a 4,300-kilometer undersea transmission cable, called the Australia-Asia PowerLink.

Australia-Asia PowerLink | Bechtel The AA PowerLink is the first of its kind and will take advantage of one of the most reliably sunny places in the world to boost the Australian and Singaporean economies and hasten energy transition.

The long-term lease not only reflects the city’s confidence in Avflight as the airport’s sole FBO, but also allows the company a path forward to significantly invest in the property. Beginning this summer, Avflight will construct a modern terminal measuring—at a minimum—3,000 square feet, along with a 15,000-square-foot heated hangar next to the existing terminal. The structures will greatly enhance the airport’s amenities, services and security, making KDET an enticing option for transient visitors, airport tenants, charter operators and more.

“There is so much potential at the Coleman A. Young International Airport, and after several years of hard work, residents and visitors alike will begin to see signs of the enormous change to come as Avflight kicks off construction this summer,” said Detroit’s chief operating officer, Brad Dick. “I look forward to a few years from now, when Detroit once again has a truly state-of-the-art airport within our city limits.”

Extreme Vote Makeover: The Role of Ranked Choice Voting in the Oakland City Elections | Yonk | Journal of Politics and Law | CCSE 23/05/2024

In response to your Michael Griffie op-Ed re: ranked choice voting, I invite you to read this academic report.

Having worked on the Oakland Mayoral race in 2010, I can attest that nearly 35-40% of the African American vote was suppressed.

Furthermore the system was gamed when two candidates and the EastBay Times embarked upon an “Anybody but Don” campaign resulting in Don receiving little to no 2nd and 3rd place votes allowing Jean Quan to win after 10 rounds.

Rank choice voting may be a cost effective means of providing candidates the opportunity to engage larger audiences with less funding, while decreasing election cost on the clerks office, but any system which allows votes cast from one candidate to transfer to another is inherently undemocratic at face value.

Good try though 🤷🏾‍♂️

Lobito Corridor – A Reality Check 23/05/2024

"The International Energy Agency (IEA) has estimated that between 2020 and 2040, demand for nickel and cobalt will increase by twenty times, for graphite twenty-five times, and for lithium more than forty times.

This projected surge in demand for CRMs has fuelled great interest in the Lobito Corridor, and with it an inevitable scramble for access. The DRC, as the world’s largest producer of cobalt (estimates are consistently around 70% of global production), has found itself at the epicenter of this scramble, as has, by association, Zambia.

The EU and the US are among those vying for a place at the table, indicating that they will explore the development of green power projects and support investment in CRMs and clean energy supply chains along the Corridor.

The awarding of the Lobito Corridor operation concession to the above-mentioned three-member consortium (comprising two European partners) has also added impetus to the renewed focus on the Corridor from the EU perspective."

Lobito Corridor – A Reality Check The key interest of the Lobito Corridor is to use it as a means of transporting minerals and materials from the DRC and Zambia all the way over to the EU and the US.

Biden announces higher tariffs on Chinese goods, including EVs 23/05/2024

Tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles will quadruple from a 25% tax on imports to 100% and on solar cells and semiconductors from 25% to 50%, according to the White House.

Some tariffs will kick in this year, while others will come online over the next two years — in part, a senior administration official said, to give domestic industry time to catch up with demand for items like batteries.
