It has been brought to my attention that I had a campaign sign at one of the Little Deer Isle houses that have the very disturbing signs on their lawns.
First, I immediately removed my sign. Black Lives absolutely DO matter!!! This man approached me requesting a sign a couple of weeks ago and I had no idea that he would place this hateful sign in his yard.
I condemn this sign and the hateful message it stands for. It does not reflect my beliefs or how I would serve as your Representative.

Maine Voices: Trump rights a wrong by reopening marine monument to fishing 11/06/2020

I have given this issue much thought over the past few days. After asking around, I find that although a few Maine fishermen did fish this area years ago, This will benefit few now. My next question is, if in fact, the Right Whales transit this area when they head to Canada, how will this reflect on the Maine fishermen? I have no doubt that if one gets entangled out there in an area we will probably not fish, it will come back to haunt us. Do we really want to have our good name (and it is good as is our track record for having NO proven entanglements) associated with being in favor of this??? Just a thought and I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!!!

Maine Voices: Trump rights a wrong by reopening marine monument to fishing Though Maine vessels don't routinely fish Seamounts, the process that created the monument raised important issues.

President Trump Opens National Monument to Commercial Fishing 07/06/2020

I have an honest question. Although I have fished for 34 years inshore, I am not an offshore fisherman. Do we have any fishermen in Maine who fish in the area that President Trump just opened?? Any fishermen in our District- Stonington, Deer Isle, Isle-au-Haut, Vinalhaven, North Haven, The Cranberry Islands, Frenchboro, Swans Island, Marshall Island Township, Southwest Harbor or Tremont that this will affect and will be fishing there?

I support our right to hold PEACEFUL protests and the first amendment to exercise the freedom of speech! I do also believe that we have some amazing police officers here in our area who work hard to ensure our safety and enforce the law & who have run wonderful programs for our children! I have known many of these officers most of my life and they do a great job! Let's all remember that one fisherman who brings in an illegal catch doesn't mean the entire fleet is guilty of this! One bad accountant doesn't mean they are all bad! One bad apple doesn't mean they are all rotten! W**d out the bad apples!!! I believe that things need to change and equality is vital to our country regardless of skin color, s*xual orientation, religion or s*x. These horrific examples of police brutality must end! The killing of innocent people must end. The use of unjustified deadly force must also end. I think those good police officers also agree with this. I don't support the destruction of personal property we have all seen on TV! Some of these businesses are supportive of this cause and are fighting to survive the pandemic! Looting is NOT a peaceful protest!!

To my White friends:
I love you and I believe you care about everyone. I also believe we know that racism exists and that we do our best not to be racist. I think we do try to navigate our lives and be good citizens; but when we see something so blatantly shocking as we saw when we watched the last 8 ½ minutes of George Floyd’s life (although it has happened to many others) under knee of a police officer as three officers watched and did nothing while citizens on the street begged them to help, we really don’t know exactly how to handle this.

I have been seriously struggling with this one…maybe because I watched that video. In fact, when I saw it, I had to fact check it because I didn’t believe it. I’m sure many of you didn’t believe it either at first. For me, the shock of that video hasn’t worn off. I want to help, but in this situation, it is even difficult for me to ask my Black friends how I can help, because as hard as it hit me, I cannot begin to imagine how raw they are feeling.

So, I thought about some of the conversations I have had with my Black friends in the past, and in an effort to support them, I have listed a few things that I believe White people can do to show solidarity and empathy with Black people during this moment in time:

Stop posting “Blue Lives Matter” or “All Lives Matter” on your timelines. Although these statements may be true, during a time when clearly George Floyd’s life didn’t matter, it gives the impression that White People are making excuses for bad behavior in our police departments and/or that White People are MORE important than Black People. Right now BLACK LIVES MATTER and we White People need to make sure Black people know that.

Stop blaming peaceful protesters for the actions of those that clearly are using the situation to PROMOTE racial violence and fuel hatred.

Stop quoting Dr. King. We aren’t Black and to use the words one of the most beloved Icons of the Civil Rights Movement to stifle the voices of Black People isn’t helping.

Stop posting pictures of graffiti or other vandalism and immediately blaming protesters for that vandalism. Some of this crap is from years ago and didn’t even happen during the protests, and some of it is perpetuated by divisive organizations and not peaceful protesters. Fact check your stuff.

Stop posting crap from Black People blaming Black People for the deaths in their communities. The wounds are OPEN. Remember what your Mother said, ”If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything.”

Listen for opportunities to help. They will come, and when they do, show up.

Finally, I will leave you with the final words of George Floyd and I will ask you to own that this was wrong, to not make excuses for it or place blame, and if you can’t do anything else, say a prayer…because unless we White people do something about this, it WILL happen again.

I would like to know about how other lobstermen & women feel about this?? I personally feel that this researcher failed to consider the fact that the Canadian fishermen are subsidized by their country, failed to consider climate change and biggest of all- FAILED to consider that MAINE lobstermen have for years already taken steps to mitigate the chances for entanglement and there have been NO entanglements proven to have occurred in Maine gear since we took these measures in 2002!! (19 years ago)
