Ugonna Enyinnaya for Beaverton School Board
Ugonna is on the Beaverton School Board, representing Zone 5. She is a mother of 1. Born and raised in Nigeri
One of my favorite duties as a School board director is to attend graduation ceremonies. I look forward to them all year. It is a reflection of and a testament to the hardwork of our staff and incredible educators.
Whenever I come to the table as one school board member, paramount on my priorities is the success of our students. Sometimes, I come down harder on staff but I do so with the best interest of our students in mind and quite frankly, that’s what our community members voted me in to do. However, days such as this make my service on the school board worth it. Serving my community in this capacity will continue to be my absolute pleasure.
Thank you to our amazing staff for all you do daily and the great work you have done the entire school year to ensure the success of our students, within the classroom and most importantly, outside the school walls.
Ps: I can get used to this reserved parking…icing on the cake. A girl can’t walk a long distance in heels 😍.
Today, I took my son for his swimming class and his instructor turned out to be his new teacher at his new school this fall. I felt a sudden and deep sense of peace at my decision to move him out of BSD to a private school.
My son struggles with transitioning and I have wondered how best to seamlessly transition him to this new program. Well, what a fantastic way to bond with your new teacher and now I am confident he will not have a hard time when we go for our summer visit next week.
My son like most students on autism spectrum and other special needs struggled a lot during the school year. He thrives better in a smaller school setting and was extremely overwhelmed with navigating through high school for the first time.
As his parent and caregiver, it was extremely painful and torturous to watch him go through so much challenges which spilled over to mental health and behavioral issues due to unmet needs.
It was harder to watch as a school board member the lack of resources to adequately address those needs and at the same time not wanting special privileges/treatments/favors. Yet walking a thin line not to conflict my interest.
Hence, I made the tough decision to pull my son out of BSD. He is enrolled to start attending Victory Academy, a private autism school in Sherwood. I had to make some financial adjustments in order to afford this program.
This was a tough decision to make. I did not make this decision as a School board director but as a frustrated and desperate mother trying to do what’s best for her struggling child.
My heart goes out to other special needs parents who do not have the wherewithal to access different educational options for their students.
I have not lost sight of my “Why” for running for school board. I was elected into this office to represent our egregiously under served communities. Including communities of color, immigrant communities and special needs families etc. I am on your side and will continue to be your advocate and will not stop bringing those divers and unpopular perspectives to the table.
My top priority was to ensure that every student irrespective of their race, gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation or ability is granted equitable access to the resources they need to be successful within the classroom and beyond. This priority is reflected in the manner in which I vote on policies. That has not changed. It will continue to be my absolute pleasure to serve my community.
One of our major responsibilities as a school board was to hire a new superintendent this year. I am happy and proud with the direction we took as a board. We hired the first superintendent of color and my colleagues and I unanimously voted and passed his contract. Today, Beaverton School District welcomed Dr. Gustavo Balderas as the new superintendent.
This week I got the opportunity to visit Mckinley Elementary school, one of the schools in my zone. My visit brought back a lot of fond memories. Walking down the hall way with my little 2nd grader. Dropping him off, running off to work and wondering how to figure out daycare.
My visit reminded me once again that these issues are still very much in existence. Child care, academic coaching etc..are issues that our low income communities, single parent households are still dealing with.
We must do better for our communities.
Ps: I also got an opportunity to share a little bit about myself. Thank you BSD for this video spot light.

I got the opportunity to visit CAIRO Academy located at Errol Hassell Elementary School. This Pre k program was created for African Immigrant families. It was a pure joy to see how happy the children were and It was evident they enjoy being at school. I wish this program existed when my son was in Pre school.
Thanks to the principal of Errol Hassell-Cynthia Moffett, the teachers and everyone involved in this amazing work.
Following the School board meeting last night, I am happy to say the Beaverton School District has put measures and protocols in place to ensure our students return to school full time in a safe and secure manner. I appreciate the hard work our teachers, principals, administrators and the entire school leadership have put in to make the school walls safe for students to return to.
Many of our community members reached out and expressed their concerns, fears and apprehension for or against school re-opening. I heard you and I advocated for you. Your fears and concerns are valid and I share them too.
We all may not agree on some protocols and procedures but one thing we share in common is serving the best interest of our students.
Serving you and bringing your voice to the table is a great privilege that I do not take for granted. Lets continue to work together to make our school district a place for every student to thrive.
Ps: Please wear your mask and get vaccinated. Together we can beat this pandemic/variant.

Today was surreal. I was sworn in as a BSD School Board Director. I could not be more proud to be taking this journey with two other amazing women of color -Sunita Garg and Dr. Karen Perez. It has taken quite a journey and community effort to get here. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who believed in our cause and supported our campaign. I ran to bring the much needed fresh perspectives to the school board and to bring representation for our underserved communities. Top on my priorities have been returning students to school safely, centering community voices, promoting equity and inclusion to ensure equal outcomes for all students. My priorities have not changed and I am ready to get to work.

As a mother with a child in the Beaverton School District, I understand and can advocate for what this generation needs from their schools, educators, and community. Please vote by May 18th!
To be an immigrant mom running for public office is beyond a dream. Combined with having a child in our schools and knowing how desperately our kids need support and that I can be a part of that solution...it all feels surreal, in the best way. Not long ago, a position on the school board would have been impossible for someone like me. Thank you for your support in turning wild, impossible dreams into reality.
It's the home stretch. We are so close. If you have the time to contribute to my campaign, please sign up below to phone bank. Thank you!
