Penn State Industries

A few days ago I turned a brass hammer handle for a kit purchased from Penn Industries. I chose a blank of Black Ebony as it is very hard and would contrast nicely with the brass hammer head and polishes up nicely. The following pictures will show the process of making this piece.
1st- the blank of Ebony and the hammer head
2nd- roughing the blank
3rd- turning the base of the handle
4th- sizing the insert into the head with a ¾” wrench
5th-turning the main handle section
6th- smoothing the handle with a file to clean up any tooling marks
7th- using progressively finer sandpaper to get a fine finish
8th- final green pad rub down

Because I forgot to drill the hole first for the all thread insert, it took much effort and time to do it after the finished exterior of the piece. Will have to make sure I don’t make that mistake again.

9th- drilling the hole for the all tread, notice the mark on the bit for the depth needed
10th- the finished product

I’ve been excited with my wood lathe lately and working in WileE, the 6’ x 12’ work trailer, my tiny space.
This project will be a mushroom shaped Bud Vase. I had a blank of walnut that seemed right for the project and a bunch of small vials that were screaming to be in a Bud Vase. S here we go.
1st- the many vials, notice the lip on one of them
2nd- the walnut blank all chucked up
3rd- roughing to a cylinder
4th- drilling the hole
5th- notice the mark for depth of the hole
6th- turning the top of the hole to fit the lip of the vial
7th- it fits
8th- shaping the mail body
9th- using a file to smooth out tool marks
10th- sanding the inside of the cap using a stick to hold various grits of sandpaper
11th- after oiling with mineral oil, the finished Bud Vase

So here is almost all my STUFF from 69 years of collecting. I plan to sell, give away, trash and reduce, leaving only some things for my two kids. This may take a while so wish me luck. By the way did I say how beautiful it is here in Salida.

Well gang, I have been remiss in keeping you up on my new lifestyle. Sorry. I bought an Ambulance to replace the GMC van as it is more roomy and I can stand and walk around in it. Much better. It with my tool trailer were located at the train station in Lamy NM while I began the movement of 69 years of personal stuff. After 5 trips from Lamy to Salida Colorado (250 Miles) I have almost completed this task. Anyway, everything is in one location and I can settle in to continue the sorting process. I am happy here, it’s beautiful.

Not my tiny house, but nicely done

It snowed last night so I think I will go and straighten up the work trailer. This is what happens when you are not working daily and putting everything back where it belongs. Perhaps that will be a rule to follow in tiny spaces.

My inspiration. He never gave up, never let failure stop him, and always had another idea.

This is the work trailer that will be pulled behind the ambulance. I call it Wile E Coyote, always chasing the Roadrunner. It is full of power and hand tools that we will explore later. I love working and creating in this tiny space.

I thought to share a bit of what is currently happening. I was living comfortably in a GMC van but at some point I wanted to stand up. So the universe led me to an ambulance just 40 miles away. Love at first sight and I can stand up! Much to do to make it less medical and more homey. Oh, and that is my dog Hazel The bestist.

Happy Valentines day to all, especially to my two ex wives, Cynthia and Kate who remain my very best friends and continue to support and encourage. To all, I hope you have had a wonderful and amazing day

Hey all, just a bit of backstory for your entertainment. I have been in business as a sole proprietor for over 30 years. In that time we have created many amazing projects from artificial rockwork to exhibit design and fabrication, a museum traveling show, work for the State of New Mexico, Department of Game and Fish, many artists and so much more.
I got interested in a CNC business where we ran a plasma CNC, router CNC, and a laser CNC, and did that for about 6 years and just recently I've sold my property and my business and I'm starting the wander life in a van with a small workshop trailer (6' x 12') right behind it so I can continue to make small little items whenever I feel like it, but with no pressure. Am really excited about this new direction and where it will lead me. Anyway, that's it in a nutshell. There will be more details as this develops. See Ya'.

Welcome!!! This group is about how to create wonderful products and art in a very small space. I can show you how to use any area, even a closet, to make the things you envision. I will show you cool tools and equipment that take up minimal space.

Do you have a creative bent, want to make something, and have virtually no place to work (type Y/N)
