Interviews With Inspirational People | iHeart Here we interview interesting and inspiring people.
“Thanks to today’s communication technology, it’s easier than ever to collaborate with someone long-distance.
Mixing and mastering workflows can generally be easily adapted to include live
streaming or sending files to session participants in other locations. This allows the key members of the production team to be involved throughout the entire process and to receive immediate feedback from the other team members.
The recording end of things still very much depends on the artist being recorded in a good, quiet location and with good-quality well-placed microphones, so working remotely can be a bit more challenging for that phase of a project if there isn’t an engineer on-site with the artist to see to these things. Many artists, though, are acquainted with microphones and placement techniques, and streaming allows for immediate feedback from the engineer, so it can be a productive way of working.
The current technology for facilitating long-distance workflows has opened up a world of exciting possibilities on the creative front in music production. It allows for artistic collaborations that might have been difficult or even impossible a few years ago”.

While trailblazing at the forefront of technology is a priority for us, it’s important to remember that the real magic in music production comes from the creative minds of the people involved.
When setting up Studio 1 we wanted to allow for maximum creativity during the mixing process.

Valhalla Studio New York’s dream team Ronald Prent & Darcy Proper recently served as panelists at the MixNYC: Immersive Music Production event. This event was the first in the industry to focus entirely on immersive audio.
Let us know what questions you have about immersive audio!
“Artists can make a session difficult if they are very indecisive and unsure of what they want, or if they are sure of what they want, but unable to communicate it in a constructive fashion.
In the first case, indecisiveness can lead to a lot of energy spent in non-productive pursuits. It’s fine to experiment a bit in the studio when time and budget allow, and it’s even a lot of fun, but sessions should ideally be approached with focus – working toward a tangible goal rather than wildly casting about in multiple directions hoping for inspiration to drop out of the sky.
In the second case, an artist’s ability to communicate [their] wishes to the engineer is key to a productive, successful session. For example, “That sucks!” is not a particularly useful comment in terms of helping the engineer to understand and address an issue, while comments like, “I’d like that rolling bass to feel tighter and more compact” or “The crash cymbals are getting in the way of the guitars in the chorus” are far more useful in leading the engineer to the sound that the artist has in mind.
Engineers don’t expect artists to communicate in technical terms like frequencies and decibels, but we do want to know what [they’re] hearing in musical/emotional terms specific enough to help us understand the goal. It’s our job as engineers to then translate that information into what gear to use and how to use it.
In short, constructive feedback is key to a great session and the lack of it can be disastrous”.
Here’s a highlight from the MixNYC: Immersive Music Production! Pictured here with are Jeff Francis and Barry Bongiovi.
“Jeff is a friend and former colleague of mine from Sony Classical Productions and Sony Music Studios where he was an extremely talented Maintenance Technician. Jeff is currently the Coordinator of Audio Recording at the University of South Carolina School of Music.
Barry is a legend in the industry, having managed the iconic Power Station, Hit Factory, and Right Track track studios in NYC. He was Studio Operations Manager at Sony Classical Productions while I was there in the 1990s. He’s currently a marketing and facilities operations consultant to NY’s magnificent Jungle City Studios”. - Darcy
Here are some characteristics that make a session fun/productive for the engineer!
Save the date! This Saturday, August 6th, Ronald Prent & Darcy Proper will at the MixNYC Panel!
They will be on the 3rd & last panel discussing the complicated deliverables on all immersive audio formats and other workflow challenges.

The name for our studio was an easy choice: Not only because the Norse mythology means a lot to us, but also because our Studio 1 looks like a Viking ship (upside down).
“Decades ago, it was commonplace to get an “entry-level” position at a large studio, record company, or agency without a formal education and to train entirely “on the job”, moving slowly up through the ranks as experience and knowledge were gained there.
Now, this is very rare and most facilities/companies will not even consider hiring someone who hasn’t made a commitment to his or her field through acquiring some type of formal education”
