Jasmine Nicole creates elegantly natural and realistic lace front wigs, extensions, and hairpieces for the multidimensional woman.

At the age of 26, Jasmine Johnson began experiencing significant hair loss. She was diagnosed with Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, a hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries and male pattern baldness, among other things. You've got medical hair loss, but after researching, you find out that your insurance won't cover the cost of a cranial prosthesis. Now what? Is that the end of the road? Hardly!

If your insurance company refuses to pay for your cranial prosthesis, there are other options to help you obtain one. Here are a few options to look into.

If you need to pay for your wig out of pocket, save your receipt in case the cost of a cranial prosthesis is tax-deductible. If your medical bills are more than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income, the cost of the wig could become tax-deductible.

Another option is to look into charity organizations. Groups like , , and others have donation or cost coverage programs available.

Don't be afraid to ask for help! Some companies have donation or charity programs as well. In fact, we've been known to do this in the past... https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/entrepreneurs-surprise-cancer-survivor-with-custom-wig/281-608069304

Don't forget about local support groups for your illness or condition, which may include people who have been through the process of buying a cranial prosthesis. Check your doctor's office or hospital and online for helpful resources in your area!

If you end up purchasing a peruca from Jasmine Nicole for your cranial prosthesis needs, we will be happy to provide you with any documentation you need to submit your claim.

A cranial prosthesis a wig designed for people suffering from hair loss due to medical conditions like alopecia areata/totalis, trichotillomania, chemotherapy, thyroid- or kidney-related hair loss, or other diseases/treatments resulting in total or partial baldness.

Did you know that some people have been experiencing hair loss after suffering from COVID-19?

Because a cranial prosthesis is a medical device, full or partial coverage of the cost is available through many medical insurance companies. But you need to know what to ask for (and how).

Most insurance companies will cover between 80 and 100 percent of the cost of your cranial prosthesis and will allow you to receive one per year for medical hair loss. But your doctor MUST indicate it is needed for medical reasons.

Do a little research. Get a copy of your health insurance contract & look specifically at the section about prosthesis coverage. Most policies do not spell out exclusions under prostheses, so you're most likely to have your claim accepted by applying for prosthesis coverage.

Once you have that info, call the # on the back of your insurance card and ask:
- If your policy covers a cranial prosthesis (not a wig)
- How much of the cost the policy will cover
- If you need pre-approval
- What documentation you need for pre-approval & filing a claim

If you have coverage, ask your doctor to write a prescription for a cranial prosthesis, or the specific terminology required by your insurance (ex: hair prosthesis, hair prosthetic, cranial prosthetic).

Get a pre-approval letter from your doctor, if needed. Make sure they state that the piece is not simply for cosmetic reasons but for your emotional well-being.

Through the whole process, make sure you have a paper trail - keep these papers organized and easily accessible in case you need to refer back to them.

At minimum, you'll need:
- Your doctor's prescription for the cranial prosthesis
- The sales receipt
- Your completed insurance claim form
- Any correspondence between you & the insurance company

Remember: insurance companies process 1000s of claims per day, and sometimes paperwork gets lost. Keeping your own files will help if your claim goes missing. Don't forget that you can almost always appeal denials.

Head on over to our blog to read more about cranial prostheses, and what to do if you're NOT covered by insurance. https://thejnexperience.com/cranial-prosthesis-insurance-coverage/

Jasmine Nicole offers 2 kinds of wigs: custom and peruca. But what's the difference between them?

A "typical" wig (non-custom) is a pre-made wig that just needs to ship to customers--like a handbag or clothing. When buying a non-custom wig, you simply select the style, choose from a pre-made size, and wait for it to arrive.

A custom wig is one that is made to order. Jasmine Nicole offers seasonal collection lines, which are limited-edition releases of specific peruca prototypes that we replicate when you order.

Custom wigs are created specifically for you based on one of our prototypes. While this does not allow complete customization of the peruca’s style or design, one of our master constructionists will create a base fitted to your exact head size, with a lace color you select.

Bespoke perucas are 100% customizable to your specifications. You take control of every aspect of your peruca—you build your own design, from length to style to color.

When ordering a custom or bespoke wig / peruca, here are some things you want to consider to ensure you get the best quality and value for your money.

Where did the hair come from? Was it sourced ethically? How was it collected? Is it Remy hair? Is it virgin hair? How was it crafted--by machine or by hand? By masters or amateurs?

Finally, here are some maintenance tips for your custom wig. These will help ensure your investment lasts as long as possible--hopefully even a lifetime!

If your wig is removable, store it on a mannequin head when not in use to avoid tangling. Cover it with an acrylic box or similar to protect it from dust. If your wig is sewn in, wear a silk bonnet or scarf at night to protect the hair.

Wash your wig regularly, but not too frequently. If you wear it every day, we recommend no more than twice per month to keep it looking fresh as long as possible.

When styling, avoid heavy oils or creams - these will weigh the hair down, can make the wig look greasy, and might leave a residue that can be hard to wash out.

If you’re serious about wigs, you’ll want to invest in a custom wig rather than a pre-made model. At Jasmine Nicole, we offer limited edition seasonal lines of perucas made to order (custom wigs) and wigs designed completely by you (bespoke perucas).

Custom wigs are an investment, but we think they're well worth it. There are two main reasons why you might want a custom wig.

Reason #1: They are an easy, natural-looking way to change up your appearance--perfect for the modern multidimensional woman!

Reason #2: They can help you cope with medical hair loss. Medical wigs AKA cranial prostheses can be used by patients going through chemotherapy or other hair loss inducing medical treatments, as well as patients suffering from conditions like alopecia and PCOS.

TIP: Many insurance companies will cover part or all of the cost of a wig if your doctor writes a prescription for cranial prosthesis!

If you want to try a custom wig, there are a few different types available on the market. We recommend a custom wig made from real human hair rather than synthetic fibers. The best real human hair is virgin remy hair.

Lace-front wigs are made of a basic wig cap with a couple of inches of lace sewn to the front of the wig cap and a closure. This mimics the look of natural hair growth at the front of the hairline.

Full-lace wigs are usually made with human hair and constructed completely from a lace cap. Because the hair is tied on to the lace cap one strand at a time, you can part your hair in any direction without revealing that you’re wearing a wig.

Installation with a full-lace wig is much more involved--the hair is braided into cornrows and adhesive glue is applied around the hair's perimeter. The wig is held in place by a bond to the glue and secured with wig clips.

You've decided that you want real human hair extensions... but how do you find ones that are high quality? (And believe us, there are plenty that are NOT!)

The quality of human hair extensions depends on how the hair was collected, whether it was chemically processed, and how it was sourced.

If the only label is "real human hair," we'd advise you to walk away. This is likely "barbershop hair" or "fallen hair" collected from various donors, chemically processed, and without cuticle alignment.

"Barbershop hair" is literally taken from the barbershop floor. The chemical treatment weakens the strands, and lack of cuticle alignment makes it more prone to matting/tangling.

Look for hair that is labeled "Remy" hair. This means it's collected in a way that preserves the natural cuticle alignment of the hair. But even Remy hair can come from various donors and be chemically processed.

Virgin hair is hair that has not been chemically processed AND comes from a single donor. This means it hasn't been damaged by dyes, perms, bleaches, harsh weaves, etc.

REMEMBER: Virgin hair is Remy hair... but Remy hair is not always virgin hair! Virgin hair is the highest quality option.

How was the hair sourced? Sourcing has an impact on extension quality and appearance--and how well it will blend with your natural hair.

We can't speak for other brands, but our raw hair is vetted and selected by a trained team. It undergoes a thorough & gentle hand-cleaning process to ensure cuticles stay intact. Every bundle is a little different--because they all come from single donors.

Currently, we source our hair from a number of locations around the world, each of which has unique textures and lusters, allowing our customers to find an option that best matches their own hair.

How do you find the best hair extensions? There are a LOT of options, and they're not all as great as they claim. Here's how to evaluate whether hair extensions are high quality.

What are the hair extensions made of? The options are synthetic hair or real human hair (or a mix). Synthetics are generally cheaper, while real human hair is more expensive.

Synthetics are cheaper, but that's their only real appeal. They will wear out after a few months max (possibly making them more expensive in the long run), and they often don't look like real hair.

Synthetic extensions are also easy to damage, so styling options are limited. Many can't be styled with heat at all, and things like sun exposure, friction, hair products, or even a hairbrush can make them break down.

If you DO purchase synthetic exensions, be sure to buy safe: make sure they are flame retardant. PVC, PET, and Modacrylic fibers are--but PP and untreated PET are NOT. This can be extremely dangerous.

Real human hair extensions are more expensive up front, but they are higher quality and will last much longer (perhaps making them more economic in the long run).

Our extensions, when properly cared for, can literally last forever. You will have to have them reinstalled periodically, but you won't have problems with them breaking down if you take care of them.

Real hair extensions also blend seamlessly with your own hair. It can be styled just like your real hair and is more resilient to damage than synthetics.

Don't stop at finding extensions that are labeled "real human hair," though, because there are several other steps to making sure it's QUALITY human hair.

How do you know which type of hair extension is right for you? Here are some tips for figuring that out.

How long do you want them to last? Common sew-in extensions typically last for six to eight weeks, clip-ins last three to six months, tape-in extensions last between four and eight weeks, and I-tips can last three to four months.

Note that high-quality, raw, unprocessed hair 100% free from synthetic or Chinese blends (like what we use!) can last much longer and be re-used with proper care!

Your hair type and scalp health matter, and certain types of extensions work better with certain hair types. Sew-ins might sound like a great option... but consider if they're ideal for YOUR hair!

Sew-in extensions work best for people with thick, natural hair. They are installed by cornrowing the hair from ear to ear and then sewing the extensions into the braids with a needle and thread. Scalp strain will be too high for fine hair (and they also might slip out/loosen too quickly).

Clip-in extensions are best for medium-density hair. These extensions are the easiest on the scalp because they require no braiding or gluing. They are great for people who want to try extensions before deciding on a more permanent solution.

Tape-in extensions are best for fine, thin hair because the tape is virtually invisible. These extensions can be reused, and application time is usually around one hour.

I-Tips are best for medium to thick hair. One thing to know: I-tip extensions will need to be re-tipped after one or two uses, as the bond slowly breaks down over time.

Hair extensions have become an increasingly popular way for the modern multidimensional woman to change up her hairstyle with minimal commitment and maximal effect.

But did you know that the use of hair extensions dates back to ancient Egypt? An actual Egyptian grave from ca. 3400 BC showed a middle-aged Egyptian woman with shoulder-length extensions!

Today, there are several types of hair extensions in common use. We're going to cover the following here:
- Sew-ins (AKA weave hair)
- Clip-ins
- Tape-ins
- I-Tips (AKA fusion, bonding, or pre-bonded hair)

Sew-in extensions are sewn onto natural braided hair and last for 6-8 weeks. The process can take several hours, and the strain on the scalp makes them best for women with thicker hair.

Clip-in extensions are wefts of hair attached to a cloth or lace base with clips. They can be clipped on to your natural roots and generally last 3-6 months with proper care. Luxury virgin hair extensions (high-quality, unprocessed hair) can last much longer.

Tape-in hair extensions should only be installed professionally. They are taped onto the sides of your natural hair with adhesive weft tape.

I-Tips (AKA fusion or pre-bonded extensions) also need to be installed by professionals. They are individual strands of human hair attached to the root of the hair by a tool that looks a lot like a glue gun.

Many hair extensions are made with a blend of 50% natural hair and 50% synthetic materials. And unfortunately, the natural hair is often low quality and chemically treated - making it look fake and be prone to breakage & tangling.

Want to avoid spending a ton of money on extensions that end up matting & needing to be thrown away after one use? Buy only 100% raw, unprocessed human hair--like what we have.

Now you know about the types of extensions... but how do you know which are best for you? More on that next week - or visit our blog to learn more! https://thejnexperience.com/luxury-extensions/

What's a peruca? It's the feminized version of peruke, handmade wigs designed and produced for prestigious and notable men of the 17th-19th centuries. Yes, those wigs—the big, white, curly, ostentatious, and elaborate hairpieces that defined the high-society look of those times.

But white European men didn’t invent the idea of using wigs as a way to visually communicate status and wealth—they just gave it a name. The craftmanship of perukes was actually modeled after the wigs created and worn by ancient Egyptians, who referred to them as hair adornments.

Our perucas model the grandeur, elegance, and quality of the wigs made by ancient Egyptians, but for the modern multidimensional woman. Each step of our process uses highly skilled workers specifically trained in one area of expertise. The entire process takes 21 days.

Not all wigs are created equally... so how do you ensure your peruca or wig is high quality? We've got a few tips...

How was the hair obtained? Was it cut directly from a single person’s head or swept off the barbershop floor? Single-donor hair (remy hair) preserves cuticle alignment. Because it all comes from the same person, no treatment is needed to ensure a consistent texture.

Is the hair natural, unprocessed, & properly aligned? When hair comes from multiple donors using the “barbershop” method, it's gathered & sorted by length, and then treated chemically. This damages the hair follicles, making them weaker and prone to breakage.

By contrast, virgin (unprocessed) remy hair (which we use exclusively at Jasmine Nicole) retains its original texture and cuticle alignment, meaning the hair will be stronger, healthier, easier to care for, and longer lasting.

Has the hair been blended with any other fibers/synthetics? Most manufacturers use a blend of 50% human hair and 50% synthetic fibers. It cuts down on manufacturing costs, but the result LOOKS like a wig, not a real head of hair. We use 100% human hair.

How was the peruca made? By a skilled constructionist, who hand tied each weft and strand? Or by machines and unskilled workers? Just like any product, using machines and unskilled labor might be cheaper and faster, but it results in a product that is lower quality.

Is the peruca a lace front or full lace? Lace front wigs & full lace wigs create more natural look because they tie hairs one by one onto a very thin, almost invisible lace material. This creates the illusion of a natural hairline rather than the blunt line cheaper wigs create.

How should perucas be preserved? Spending thousands on a luxury peruca and then receiving it in a cardboard box on a Styrofoam head… no thanks. Our handmade, authentic perucas come with a black fiberglass head and a burgundy acrylic box so that you can display it proudly!

Jasmine’s Story

At the age of 26, Jasmine Johnson began experiencing significant hair loss. She was diagnosed with Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, a hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries and male pattern baldness, among other things. The doctor informed her that there was no cure and that the symptoms would have to be managed for life.

As a young, stylish, confident woman, finding out that her hairline would recede was an immediate blow to her esteem. Her wife, Miracah Johnson, purchased a wig from a top wig company with all the bells and whistles for over $2,000, hoping to ease Jasmine’s insecurities. Unfortunately, the wig was unusable: it was too big, was poorly constructed, used processed hair, and came packaged in a cardboard box with a hair net.

Disappointed that the company’s wig did not live up to her expectations, Jasmine knew that if she was having this problem then other women were, too. Aiming to develop the perfect wig--modeling the grandeur and elegance of the ancient Egyptian Queens--Jasmine and Miracah began laying the foundational groundwork of Jasmine Nicole.

Jasmine Nicole was born to provide authentically-sourced, 100% unprocessed virgin remy hair extensions, hairpieces, and bespoke lace front wigs for the multidimensional woman.
