The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Hyundai and Kia developed theft deterrent software for the 8.3 million impacted vehicles that will be provided to owners free of charge. The software updates include extending the length of the alarm sound from 30 seconds to 1 minute and requiring the key to be in the ignition to turn the vehicle on.
Guidance for Hyundai & Kia Owners
Hyundai will be providing the software for the most vulnerable models first, with additional models to follow.
Kia has started notifying owners of the software availability and plans to make it available to most affected owners over the next few months.
Both companies are offering complimentary steering wheel locks through participating law enforcement agencies. Owners can contact local law enforcement to confirm availability.
NHTSA urges impacted owners to call Hyundai at 800-633-5152, or Kia at 800-333-4542 for more information.
