After consultation this morning with the Mercer Area Sno-goers and the White Thunder Riders it has been determined that the northern portion of Iron County Snowmobile Trails will open at 7:00 am on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. See the attached map. The northern part of the county received about 12” of lake effect snow this past weekend allowing for a partial opening. Early season conditions exist and may deteriorate as the temperatures continue to warm later this week and next. Please check back for additional updates. There is trailer parking available at Schomberg Park (Hwy 51), in Hurley off of Hwy 77 west of the 5th Ave intersection, and at Saxon Harbor, Co Hwy A in Saxon. Many businesses may allow parking but please ask for permission. Also, ATVs and UTVs will continue to be prohibited when the temperature is above 30 degrees to try to protect the little base we have.

Grooming operations are at about 75 percent. We are working new areas daily. The busy weekend set our base back a bit but new snow that we received should improve the system.

Did you know Wisconsin is the birthplace of the snowmobile? Carl Eliason built his snow toboggan in 1924 in his hometown of Sayner.

Today, snowmobiling remains a favorite Badger State pastime with more than 240,000 snowmobiles registered in Wisconsin in 2021, more than any other state. We also have nearly 25,000 miles of trails crisscrossing the state!
