The coqui. It is Puerto Rico’s mascot and anyone that describes its song will tell you it literally sounds like ‘koh-kee.’ This little frog can be heard throughout the island as soon as the sun starts to set.

Have you ever heard of the term “Yo soy de aqui, cómo el coqui.” ? (I am from here (Puerto Rico) like the coqui.) We use this term to express the pride and joy that comes from being where are from.

Do you know about the tradition of Three King’s Day? The story goes something like this.

When the Three King’s found out there was a baby king that came into the world, they felt compelled to go meet and worship him. At the time, some 2,000 years ago, King Herod ordered babies of the age of two and under to be killed. When he heard there was a baby king that was born, he made it his goal to find him. King Herod found out that The King’s were going to pay the baby king a visit and so he said when they find him, to advise because he wanted to go worship the baby king too. This was a lie because what he really wanted to do was unalive the baby king.

The King’s set forth their journey to visit the baby king, but ended up taking a different route. They knew King Herod had bad intentions. So they were led by the star of Bethlehem and found the baby king with his parents surrounded by animals, and brought him gifts: myrrh represents his humanity, gold for his royalty and frankincense for his divinity.

In Puerto Rico, children throughout the island, and even children in the states set aside some grass and water. The children leave it under their bed to help feed the King’s camels on their journey to visit the baby king. No grass, no gifts! LOL!
